In this tutorial I show you step by step how to cover your grey's or do a root touch up on your own hair at home using eSalon’a custom at hone color kit. This color has great gray coverage and with a pro colorist customizing your color you’re sure to end up with the right color.
Here's a link to my very own eSalon page where YOU can get a custom hair color for just $15: (eSalon had to raise the cost from $10 due to production costs. $15 is still an incredible deal)

THANK YOU! My wife asked if I'd like to color her roots - challenge accepted! We found your video, watched it twice, and I followed your tutorial. I had to improvise on that tool you used: I bought a 1" nylon-bristle paint brush, and trimmed the bristles so they flexed but still had some grab. I used a chopstick to separate the layers. Applied store-bought L'Oreal and nailed the color. It turned out great! She's so stoked, I'm relieved.

This video is to show application technique and show coverage and even saturation. And for me to cover my grays lol! I'm not actually trying to change my root color but to match my base so it’s not meant to look particularly different, just touched up! Using a random box color would likely lead you down the wrong path so instead by using eSalons custom color, you'll get the right color for YOUR hair, and not just what i'm using for mine. I really hope this video helps you guys. xx

Which do you think is better to cover grey? this or Schwartqaf (sorry if i spelled that wrong). I, for a while had a good stylist that could blend non coverable grey with blond highlights, but keep it a rich dark brown below, but of course, she went away and noone else seems to be able to get it right and the mistakes make me not want to give them more chances. I don't have a huge budget, and while manic panic is non damaging, I don't feel like wild colors right now. Anyway, I want a good color that lasts a bit on that grey, and the rest is naturally a mix of mostly brown with a little brown and blond. When most people highlight, it ends up orange and the grey still stands out, so I don't know what magic she did, but even if I learn stuff online, stylists have a tendency to not listen to me and tell me everything I learn online is just several words for the exact same thing. (like highlights/lowlights or balayage). And then they do something that is nothing like what I asked for, so if this E salon or Schwartcof is pretty good, even tho I have no energy to do it, it may be more worth it to do at home. I don't mind being grey or white or whatever it is, but my initial intention was for a gradual changeover because my sudden aging after an illness was too much to take. That one stylist totally got it and did magic, but then moved away. I was able to go almost 6 months between touch ups. I can only go for a few weeks with anyone else. But I leave it because i just have to save up for something like that. Any advice for my personal sitution would be so helpful. thankyou so much for your videos!! You and free salon education and a newer guy, justin hickox are the only ones online that give truly helpful, worthwhile info, that I have found. Many blessings and I pray you guys are safe and stay healthy and well supplied. i am nearly always stuck at home, not just right now, and the helpful info you give is truly a blessing!!

Since it's not salon quality color like she claims (any color provided for the general, unlicensed public could never legally be of professional quality) it's loaded with drying ammonia and metallic salts. Not sure why she promotes it as a licensed professional.

This is probably a silly question, but I don’t see the answer anywhere: how do you wash your hair after applying the root color without it touching the blonde highlights? Does it matter if when I clear the root color the water touches my highlights? My highlights are very blonde and I’m SO afraid it’ll get dark when I wash the roots!

Hi Elle! I am seeking your advice. So I tried to mix equal parts permanent dye in shade 8N with 10 volume (tried to make it 1.5 to 1.5 ounces) and applied it to my roots for a root tap. Anyway, this colour did not lift/lighten the colour of my dark roots (but did cover some of my greys coming in at least), so i am thinking in 4 weeks I will try a lighter shade - 9N for the root tap and/or try putting in some babylights, particularly around the front of my face to lighten things up. Anyway, my question for you is that when I did the root tape with 8N perm dye I got some it unfortunately on a couple small strands the none-root part (so the blonde stuff) and it turned it a bit purple. This happened on a small amount of strands near the front of my face. I am wondering what you would recommend to correct this issue. Should I just try highlighting those strands with bleach mixed with 20 developer? Please advise. Thank you! Loved your video on how to cut your own hair and also the video on how to cut your man's hair. I followed along to both of those and the end products were a success!! :)

Idk if this might be helpful to you my hairdresser told me how to do my hair, which is very blonde but it might also apply to you. She uses majirel by l'oreal, you can order it on amazon look at the color chart for the color you want and then use a developer (20 vol for lifting two tones and 30 for lifting 3 tones). It is a 2:1 ratio. Then just do it from the bottom to the top of the roots. Again, idk if that's helpful to you but it has worked out for me with majirel high lift 1/2 beige + 1/2 neutral with the 30 vol developer.

It depends on what your natural color is. A high lift color might do it but if you super dark you may need bleach. Hilift is great but has limits. Loreal has some good choices, I've used that to go vibrant red and it didn't ravage my hair.

Actually you can straighten your hair first then do your color. It’s way easier that way. If I know I’m going to color my hair, I’ll straighten it the day before. I actually start in the back working from the bottom up in horizontal sections. Then I do the front. I separate the back into two sections one on the left and one on the right and do one side at a time so I know I’m not missing anything. I’m also a licensed cosmetologist and I do my own color at home because it’s easier for me and more convenient.

I'm so confused. How is that COLORING ROOTS when the color didn't change at all? If Sylvia's natural hair colour is brunette (looks like level 5?) with some grey hairs, shouldn't she use some kind of bleach to brighten it first? And then tone it to end up with more ashy blonde? I don't understand the process. I even opened the video in two windows - side by side - to compare the before and after and the only difference is that "the after" (where Sylvia is wearing a denim jacket) is clean, freshly styled hair while "the before" (where she's wearing a black shirt) shows dirtier messier hair. What am I missing? And, yes, I know she explained in the comments that "this video is to show application technique and show coverage and even saturation" but how can we see even saturation when the color isn't changed at all? In that case it might just show the application of any product like conditioner and the result would be the same. The title is so misleading. I've never been so confused by a YT video...

Question: I’ve asked my colorist here in Philly if I can touch up my roots and her response was “I don’t touch your base when we do highlight so I’m afraid you doing that would warm you up too much”. Can you tell me what that means? For reference, I get a cool icy blonde highlight. Thanks and keep posting great content!
@Sophie47194
@Sophie47194 4 жыл бұрын
I think because when you get highlights you are only getting a small percentage of your hair lightened (hence why foils are typically used, to avoid lightening the other sections) whereas the rest of your hair is left with your natural colour - that is your base. If you were to lighten your roots yourself they wouldn't be highlighted, all of the hair would be lightened so instead of having dark roots they would be entirely blonde. It can also be quite difficult to get that icy tone in blonde hair so maybe she is saying you won't be able to achieve the shade yourself from home?

I'm a beginner. Could a person turn the head upside down and apply the product to the sides of gloved fingers and massage into the base of the scalp like 1.5 inches? Thinking about the back of the head by oneself. Or even standing, could one saturate the sides of gloved fingers and glide 1.5 inches around the occipital bone area?

Thank you thank you! I don't know if I have the courage to do this...concerned it'd turn out terribly. Hair has 2 shades of blonde & ash blonde @ the roots. My root color has grown out about 2 1/2 inches, so not looking so great right now.

If that's the case, why is the video called "COLOR your roots"? Why not call it "a proper application technique for roots"? And what's the purpose of ordering eSalon's COLOR KIT (which they specifically customized for Sylvia) if there is no color change? So so so confusing.

Am Raw she was covering up her grays. That is a color change (from gray to a shade that matches her natural brown roots), it’s just one that didn’t pick up well on camera since she didn’t zoom is close enough to really peep at her grays. I’m sure this kind of video is helpful for lots of women who regularly dye their hair to cover their grays but can’t get to a salon right now.

Hi! nice video! Sorry for all the wrong technical terms that are about to follow! In order not to see my greys, which usually start appearing after 2 weeks I dye my hair, my stylist made my color a brighter than my natural ash-blonde. Now that I've been trying to paint the hair by myself, the result is quite darker than I would like (using the same color!!). I also tend to paint a bit more than just the root - I cannot help it, I'm really bad at the job!! The hair tents to become brighter after a 5-6 times I wash it. Apparently, I am using the correct analogy of oxygene&color, could it be that I am too slow in applying the color, and I should leave the paint for 25 min instead of 30? Thanks!!!!!!!

Tammy Metcalfe you are correct; great tip. I even do this before I see my stylist. I run a ton of conditioner on the blond portion even when I’m just touching up highlights. When she shampoos/rinses my hair the conditioner repels the new color. Less damaging to the ends.

If you just want to get rid of the orangey tint but don't want to go any blonder then buy 7.1 or 8.1 (medium or dark ash blonde) from any brand and it will tone down the orange pigments in your hair. Try Clairol 8A if you wanna take out the brass but don't expect your hair to be any lighter! If you don't want to dye your hair again then opt for a purple shampoo (John Frieda Intense purple shampoo works for a lot of people, just leave it on for at least 5 mins). If you wanna go lighter you have to pre-lighten your hair (with bleach or ultralift) which I don't recommend during lockdown as the resources are quite limited. Hope I could help!

Susie Ladnai thank you so much!! ❤️ the medium or dark ash hair dye won’t give an ash blonde but just tone out the orange right? I’m trying for a golden tone instead of ash since my skin tone is pretty olive

I've heard before that where the root touchups overlap a little with the older color there can be a faint line that was not intended. Also, I've heard that the heat from your head can make the color develop differently than the sections further down and that is a reason to not wait too long between touchups. I've never done this before so I'm not sure if that's true, any thoughts?

Thanks for the video. I’m wondering i have blonde highlights and have grey plus very dark roots. If I order from this company are they going to be able to match my color? And if so, is it going to be a lot harder to do my own hair / roots without really messing it up? I had the thought maybe I should just buy a all over color from them and use it all over and I would still have highlights showing and after the quarantine go to my hair dresser and have her re do my highlights? Can you tell me which one I should do? Or any advice? Thank you very much. I hope that makes sense. The color for my roots would need to be blonde to match my highlights
