:-) I’m a hairdresser. Not looking awayyyy! ;-) You did a great job. The way I look at it, when someone wants to color their own hair, I’d rather give them proper instructions and suggestions of good products than make arguments for why they need a pro (me) to do it. Have gained and retained many clients by doing that...they still need haircuts, blowouts, and have family members and friends they will recommend. ANYway, Matrix color is my favorite and most effective and Ive used them ALL over the years. If you are covering gray hair however, try the 500 series of Socolor. It’s just like what you are using, called 508N and is double pigmented to better cover gray and last longer.

I don't know how anyone is supposed to get the results they are looking for from a box or even DIY'ing at home from beauty supply products! Your hair turned out beautiful, and I am amazed at your results Nadine! Just looking at 8N in google images, there is such a wide discrepancy of color swatches from all the different brands! 8N appears to be anything from light ash blonde to strawberry blonde!!! I am a stylists daughter and grew up in salons all my life!!! I was a brownish red that became completely ombre naturally in summer sun or holiday, with the palest strawberry ends. I still cannot figure out how to color my roots similar to my original virgin color without going completely orange! The parting is now white mixed with drab, no trace of red at all! Hats off to you!!! 😘💗🙏🌺

Thank you Nadine for demystifying this for us...YES!! You are definitely right to have told us about this..I've been using the splashy hair dye to do my roots for years and will now equip myself properly...NO, you are not taking work away from the professional colourist because I've been doing my roots myself for years. Now I can do them properly..big thank you to you..you're great!

So much respect for you Nadine. Honest, open, refreshing. I’ve been colouring and trimming my own hair for the last 5 years. Fine hair base 8 also, although I mix three different 8s for my tone as advised by my tony and Guy colourist friend as it goes brassy really easily, but some straight 8 helps cover greys better. Great video, this is what women want.

I love this. It’s good to be brave. I bleach my hair and have been doing so for 12 years since I lost my hair through Chemo. I used to be brunette. I’d love to go to a colour like you, light but not platinum blonde as I am now. I’ve spoken to my stylist but she insists I get her to do it at considerable expense, every 2 to 3 weeks. You are inspiring me to have a go at changing my colour myself. I know about block colouring first so my hair doesn’t turn green. But I’m nervous too. I just love how your hair looked after colouring it. Live life! Thanks Nadine. Xxx

Fabulous! Thanks for being so brave and transparent and sharing such personal, and useful information! A grown-up doing grown-up hair... No bleach or toner, just a refresh of base color. I have dyed my own, not always with success, because I haven't been consistent with product. I think consistency of product is key, and I do like you, when it starts to look obviously unprofessional, I see a professional 😉. You are gorgeous! Your hair looks gorgeous! I don't think you need any color correcting at all! Thank you for such a useful video!! As far as I'm concerned, this is now the gold standard video on KZbin about how to do an at-home touch up. 👏 😘

Great video! You're right about using the proper tools, it really makes a difference! The only tip I'd add is to do an allergy patch test, always a good idea just in case you have a reaction to the dye or developer. I'm naturally very dark ash brown (Eastern European heritage), 75% gray but when dying (mostly at the crown), I've always lightened (1/2 shade lighter) and added warmth (golden/red). At 52, if I matched my base color, it would be really harsh-looking; my features are naturally sharp/angular and as we age, our faces lose depth and and that youthful glow. Going a touch lighter and warmer adds brightness back to my features and warms my skin tone. At some point, I may stop dying but not ready for that yet.

Hi Nadine, thank you so much for doing this video and showing your greys to the world. I’ve recently gone from having 20-30% greys to about 70% in a very short period of time due to some hormonal changes, so I can relate to having to colour my roots every 2-3 weeks. I have done so for years, as my first grey strand made an appearance at 11 years old - I’m 30 now. I usually resort to a spray from Charles Worthington or the Color Wow powder to conceal during my last week, as my hair grows so fast.

I love that you're doing this yourself. With all the access you have to the top people in beauty not only are you doing hair color and cutting at home but you don't mind showing us that you're a real person. I get such a kick out of watching you and get great information, too. My biggest home hair color goof was back in the "frosted" highlight days where specific hairs were pulled with a crochet hook through small holes on a tight cap that fit snugly on your head. Then you applied a bleaching toner on the exposed hair. I had done this several times but one time I decided to multitask and do some cleaning while the product worked. I wrapped my head in plastic wrap so as not to drip on anything. At the specified time I washed it out but because of the body heat I generated it over lightened and my "highlights" were dry, brittle white hairs. Hahaha!

I colour my roots all the time - so much more cost effective! I then leave my hair stylist to do the highlights and low lights (every 6 months). Like you I've found that as the root colour fades out it blends quite nicely with the blonder bottom. My hair is quite a bit longer than yours and so I often get my husband to do it for me.

I used to be able to go 4 weeks, then do a root touch-up myself and then go to my colorist 2 weeks later. Over the year this would save me at least 3 salon visits a year. Now my roots come in after 3 weeks and after doing my roots, I'm in the salon every 4 -5 weeks. This is by far my greatest beauty expense, but I'm not brave enough to go gray completely. I use the same process as you, but I buy Clairol Root Touch-up which gives you the color and developer and I just mix and apply. Have ever considered going gray? Some women look gorgeous and some look old. I'm afraid to find out which I am!

The base colour theory only applies if you keep close to your natural hair colour. I've been dying my hair at home for over 15 years, and bleaching it along the years (successfully may I add) and I have a naturally level 3 hair which I dye to a level 7. The trick is to find a professional hair dye brand able to lift quite well and of course use the right developer but never go over 30 vol, no matter what you do! Lightening hair from a darker colour tends to go orange-ish due to the red pigment in brunette hair so always use an ASH based to balance that. If you take your time and use a quality product you will be just as good as going to a salon

I'm glad you did this! Thank you! Its annoying that the professional brands are so ... (I don't know what the word is...) They probably assume they are protecting the hairdressing industry but really they are missing a massive market. There will always be times where you want to go to the hairdressers but equally, when you want to colour at home, you want access to the best that is available. Not selling 'professional' versions because they assume people can't read instructions is kind of patronising, its not that different to using a box colour anyway. You end up paying more for inferior product (box colours)... Be interesting to see when these brands wise up and democratise the hair industry like skincare brands are doing atm...

I just started doing this at home myself!! I found Wella colour touch which worked quite well. Like you I am 8N naturally, I got 9N for roots but think will try 8 next time, the Wella is a demi permanent so wears out after about 15 washes which is good if you are a beginner at home colour like me. Was pretty happy with the result. So happy for this video Nadine, thank you! Also also that we both have similar har AND skin which makes yiur redommendations work really well for me 😊🙏

Truly appreciate your honesty as not many would do this Nadine. It is brave of you to show us what you do and that is why I respect you. You are not fake like SO SO many to name. Thank you. I would do this too to space the time out from the hairdressers visit. I may try this out as I only use home kits and not separate products. I think the fear is if one goes 'brassy'? I have dyed the odd thing in the bathroom when clumsy! I would like to point out that there are some that cannot go to a hairdressers due to allergies (my sis has become super sensitive to an ingredient in a dark dye and the salon 'fumes' can set her off... can only go blonde)She does have a mobile hairdresser now. Thank you again for this episode. Nina xoxo

I am 67 and was getting my hair professionally colored with highlights until about a year ago when I decided to try to grow my hair longer so I could wear it up in a messy bun. Since so little of my hair shows now, I decided to do it myself. I only leave mine on about 25 minutes and then run the color through the ends for 5 minutes to blend it a bit more. Save a lot of money and time. Thanks for sharing how you do it.
