I've bleached my hair at home before and the only bad thing I've done is it came out blonder than I wanted. She really messed up when she put the box dye on top. All she had to do was go to Sally's and get a color and like a 10 developer. That box dye probably had a 40 developer in it. I'm surprised anyone would touch her hair after that.

Not everyone is made of money. Not everyone can blow $400 on hair every 6 weeks.

I mean watching a tutorial takes 5 min and you already learn a lot (including not applying the product with your hands lol) I tried bleaching my hair over henna when I was like 18 and spoiler: it was HORRIBLE. I bought a darker box dye and bam! Not true, I always color my Hair at home with, wait for it, Box Dye :O :O But for me it works, my hair isn't too dark so I'll only need one session and two packs of dye. And since my hair is naturally very wavy and has a lot of different shades in it, it is not noticeable if I miss a few spots (which doesn't happen too often though) So it all depends on your hair, for some it might be smart to do it themselves whereas for others it might not be

But that was the issue she didn't know that that was what she was doing wrong, everytime she didn't get the result she wanted she just thought that she didn't have enough bleach. It's hard to correct a wrong when you don't know it's wrong. People saying $160 is too expensive really undervalue hair stylists. Keep in mind, you are paying for the products (the bleach, developer, multiple bottles of dye, toner, shampoo and conditioner, sanitizing agents, hair spray, hair foils, and other tools if they style your hair), the expertise of the stylist who has spent thousands of hours in school to be licensed, not to mention the years of experience they have and dyeing hair is so tedious, going through it section by section, the salon space they rent, which in a major metro area will cost upwards of $1000 a month, someone then has to go clean up the mess and wash the towels, the dyeing brushes and tubs, sanitizing all combs used, and so on. Sorry you think 160 is expensive but they have to earn a living too.

It shouldn't cost that much at home. You can get a bottle of developer and a tub of bleach powder for about 15 or 20 bucks. I bleach my own hair at home. I like to do crazy colors on my hair so I need to bleach it if I wanna switch color. I usually use dark colors now so I only have to bleach it a little. I use 20 or 30 volume developer but don't even leave it 10 minutes. It's literally just to pull out color. I use argon oil in my bleach mixture and apply it on my hair damp. Basically a bleach bath. You can bleach your own hair at home if you know what you're doing. You just need to do research and have a realistic goal in mind. About 10 years ago I went to a salon and ended up with chemical burns with bleeding blisters on my scalp and my hair still looked like shit. No fucking thanks!

I've had good and bad experiences both ways. Both are risky (salon vs home). You just need to make a realistic pro/con of what you want vs what you can actually get. Bottom line? You realize as a hairdresser, this is how I make my money? Would I love to charge less so more people could afford to get their hair done? Yes. But I can’t pay my bills that way. I have to buy products (color, shampoo, styling products, etc), I have student loans I’m paying on, I have to buy my tools (shears $500 each, hairdryer $300, flat iron $200, etc), and pay for educational classes every year which is required for me to be able to keep license. I don’t get paid hourly. I don’t make money unless people pay for my services. If you want to do your hair yourself, that’s fine. But don’t bash hairstylists for trying to make a living. While you may not be able to afford or just don’t want to pay $400 to get your hair done, trust me there are plenty of people who do and are happy to pay that price to have good hair.

People are saying that $160 is unreasonable, but considering her hair length and thickness, it’s a really good price. I used to have really thick, long hair, down to my middle back, and it costed $140 for two sessions, and because of how dark my hair is and the red undertones, they couldn’t get it totally blonde, it was an orange, brassy blonde, even with toner, and it would have taken a lot more money and sessions to get it blonde. The dye alone probably totaled, for two sessions, to be at least $100 because it’s professional bleach and they had to use so much for my hair, and then along with how much effort and time it takes to get it through all of my hair, because I have a lot of it. People need to realize that with service comes a price. Yes, it might cost a little more than it would to do it at home, but most people do not have cosmetology degrees, do not have access to professional dye/bleach, and do not really know what they’re doing, so in the end, if you really want it done right, it better to go to hair salon and pay the extra bucks unless you know what you’re doing.

When I was 14 I destroyed my hair with bleach.. It was bad, it was the first time I'd done my whole head, I used 40 volume developer, and processed it 4 times at almost an hour each time. I had previously had colored my hair red, black, dark purple and had bleached sections and colored them green, blue and pink. So there was ALOT going on... My mom came home from work and found me crying in the bathtub with my hoodie pulled over my whole face, and my hair literally melting off in huge chunks. She immediately took me to the super high end salon where she used to get her hair done, and spent over $1,000.00 to salvage my hair. The stylist got it to a really pretty shade 14/lightest ash brown with ash blonde highlights and brown sugar low lights. And despite all the wonky breakage she was able to save most of the length in the front, I ended up with a cute razor wispy v cut bob with babydoll bangs. God bless good hair stylists, lol. This event actually inspired me to go into cosmetology and by the time I turned 18 I was doing all my friends hair and every fall and spring I made really good money doing extensions and styling (and nails!) for prom/homecoming season.

Princess Sparkle Pixie when I was 14 me and my friend went and bought a box dye for me colour my hair, I'm a natural red head and obviously not knowing about doing hair at all just picked up a blonde dye, she just put the whole thing all over my hair loads on the roots, when it we washed it out omg my hair was white at the roots going into a yellow colour I shampooed about 5 times thinking it would wash out but then realised it was bleach we'd been using, had to go to the hairdresser the next morning to get it 'fixed' well it still didn't look great but an improvement, I now get my hair bleached by my sister a professional

in Edmonton City, Alberta, Canada - - - most salons charge around 200-300$ Canadian, which i usually can not afford, so i just get my longer locks dyed one colour (adding streaks, highlights, and/or lowlights costs more) at a cheaper salon that ahs a good reputation. if you choose a colour that will look great once your natural colour grows out a few inches, you can wait even 2 years before experimenting with a new dye job, and your hair could even have an ombre effect.

i agree, im currently in the process of going back to platinum and its cost me 250 the first time and next time ill be platinum it would cost 250. which is 500 and saved my hair. instead of it being 500 in one go (which is a little on the higher end but not the most expensive). it split up the price and saved my hair from being fried off

I don't section mine really, but my hair is short! It's no longer than the bottom of my ear lobes, and the other side is even shorter (asymmetrical hair cut). I had a devil of a time finding videos of people bleaching short hair! I found one from a guy in S. America (I think) whose hair was almost the same style as mine and followed his.

Hannah Leigh No. I was injured at work. I tore 2 ligaments and my meniscus. Thankfully the tear in the meniscus was towards the back of the knee and should heal on it own. So thankful I won't need surgery lol 😂 I'm doing much better now. Hopefully you are as well.

$160 is dirt cheap if you're asking a hairstylist to bleach or dye long hair. Where I'm from $300 is considered a steal for dying just part of your hair and only offered by hairstylists in training. That's totally fine if someone can't afford those prices, as I can't either, but that doesn't mean I would spend over $100 to ruin my hair at home. She could obviously afford to spend $140+ on box dyes but then said she can't pay $20 more to get it professionally done. So we see here that she spent way more money to do it at home and get it fixed than if she had gotten it done professionally in the first place. But yes those prices are fair/average, we wouldn't expect to get a laptop for $30 or a car for $500 for example.
