I’m not a hairstylist but, I cut my family’s hair for years. When our daughter was about 12 she asked if she could have her hair cut professionally, I said “Of course” and took her to have it done. This was long before Google reviews. I watched the stylist and realized pretty quickly that she wasn’t doing a very good job. I didn’t say anything for a couple of reasons.. first, our daughter had beautiful long hair and she hadn’t cut much off. I didn’t want to criticize the stylist and have it turn into a hatchet job. Next, our daughter had asked for a professional cut and I didn’t want to interfere with that experience. Lastly, I knew I could fix it if our daughter wanted me to. As soon as we got home I said “Well, what do you think?” She reached down and grabbed a longer piece that clearly hadn’t gotten cut and said “Mom! Please fix it!” It took a few more years before she wanted to go back to a stylist. Only this time we found a great one.. and we both ended up going to her.

I have naturally curly hair too. I grew up not knowing what to do with it, just like her. And I absolutely hated it. It wasn't until covid that I decided to embrace both my curly AND gray hair. I watched several videos on how to properly care for it. I never knew that my hair was starved for moisture and needed creams and gels to manage it. (Also learned that its better to use a hair pick than a brush or comb when dry.) Anyway now I love my hair! It's sad that it took me *61 years* to finally love what God gave me!

I have the exact same hair as this young lady. It came from my paternal grandfather so no one knew what to do with it. My hair was a big frizzy hot mess. It took about 4 years for it to reach below my waist but it was so worth it! ♥️🙏

My biggest complaint about salons is that too many stylists DO NOT LISTEN to the needs of the client. You can bring a photo, use the actual real jargon, you can say I ABSOLUTELY DO NOT WANT _________ and they do not listen. It's as if they say, "I will do it how i think it will look good, screw the client."

I have had stylists literally just do anything they want and ignore my wishes completely . I will never forget the day I came out of a salon looking like "The little Dutch Boy" on an old-timey cleanser. My sweet husband who never says an ugly thing to anyone looked at me and said, "Oh, no." It's funny now, but I burst into tears then. I had asked for a trim and to keep the same style. Six inches were cut and my head looked like a triangle!!! lol @@christinerewell9954

@@christinerewell9954But that’s not what OP was saying. There’s a big difference between the stylist saying “Hey, this may not come out the way you want it on your type of hair. I could do something similar or just go ahead with the cut anyway if you really want” and deciding they know what’s best and to not even say anything to the client. They were pointing out that some hair stylists do NOT listen to the client’s wishes whatsoever, even if it is very possible to do on the hair.

Adding layers can help depending on the weight and curl of your hair. I had breast length wavy hair and it would sometimes get weighed down at the root and pyramid out. I gave myself a shag cut and it now sits a lot nicer and to my tastes. It’s not a suggestion, but just a note in case you’re interested. Edit: I do want to say it could also make it go “ball” shaped instead, so just be warned that only add layers if you have thicker and wavy hair, not thin and curly.

The last time I've been to a hairdresser was 2 years ago. I had an appointment for balayage 2 days before new years eve. I explained to the hairdresser that I didn't wanted my roots to be bleached or dyed, just to blend upwards the bleached part ( so it looks more natural), I also told her I wanted a warmer, more natural blonde. She said nothing against or had any suggestions and started. Long story short she straight up bleached my hair leaving my roots out, without the proper balayage technique and had just bleached hair. The toner did nothing and she didn't wanted to fix it. So after I went home I fixed my hair and turned out way better than at the salon! Ofc, there are amazing hairdressers and I wish I had an experience with one who knows their profession and not just doing it for the money and not actually having a passion for doing hair!

I just had a huge hair fail at a salon. She redid it for free, but the second time was also a fail. Due to her not knowing what a product was and she grabbed like a purple toner? And it did not actually give me the purple weave that I wanted. So we schedule again for 3rd attempt and a total of approximately 7-8 hours over the course of 2 days. And now I have a big strip right down the middle of my head that has no color, and it’s almost like a skunk stripe but my natural color. And she did not have an Even part when she started. I mentioned this to her when she started and her response was it doesn’t matter. And she thinned out A LOT which I didn’t want. And it’s WAY shorter then I asked for. I asked for shoulder length she gave me chin length. And I have absolutely no hair underneath at the nap of my neck. And not to mention 1 crazy long piece that she missed but with how I style it know one notices that crazy long piece of hair that should have been layered with my Bangs, I don’t normally wear bangs but she gave me bangs 🤨😏 for $200 she isn’t worth the money or the time.

I think it depends on your curl pattern as far as the cut. When I do anything shorter than my collar bones I tend to do mostly one length. I style it very fluffy and direct the top layer up and the bottom layer down when I brush style so it pops up a lot. If I feel like it’s too heavy I put minimal internal layers in, but when it’s short I don’t want the top layers popping way up. I never get the pyramid shape because my curls are very fluffy at that length.

My grandmother, who was a hair stylist most of her life, she would refuse to give a bride or anyone a drastic new haircut, dye job ect..a week or less before a big event like a wedding. If a bride wanted to use her service, she required the bride/person to come in a minimum of 4 weeks before the wedding/event if they want any drastic change so if it isn't what the person wanted, there is 4 weeks to attempt to fix it. She told me a story about one of her first jobs for a majour event and the bride wanted to go blond, she insisted to go platinum, but the bride had almost black hair, my grandmother told her that isn't not going to look like the photo the bride brought in. But the bride insisted. (Her wedding was in 4 days, she waited for the last minute because she wanted her hair to be "fresh") So my grandmother did what she was told (also because the bride complained to my grandmothers boss), the hair came to near platium but it was so dry that it almost crunched. The bride complained to the boss, and the boss told her she was warned it wouldn't come out right but she insisted. If she had come in a few weeks sooner my grandmother could have did a couple deep conditioning treatments over the following weeks between the bleaching and wedding and she could have had time to tone it or whatever...after that, thats when my grandmother made her 4 week minimum rule. She made a lot of career long clients that way. She did one womans wedding hair, then 20 years later got to do that womans daughters wedding hair. I thought that was pretty cool. I was always jealous of people who could find hair stylist that could work their hair to practical perfection and get to stay with them for decades.

My last adoption was a cat that was on my car engine too.... and they always show up when we most needed! BTW I always follow your tips and all but I always cut my hair myself 😅

I’ve had so many stylists not listen, not ask for more info when I was “I want it cut to here”, cut it lopsided, or 20+ years ago listen to my parents when they’d say ignore them and cut it to here… now I cut it myself and if I mess it up it’s gone grow back after I attempt to salvage it… my most recent cut turned into a pixie cut 😅lol

As a little girl and teen age, my mom always cut my very long hair and that was good, after shampoo, on wet hair ❤

"You're creating a very SPECIAL kind of painting...like a Picasso painting".😂😂😂 Oh, HB, you are so gentle and careful about the way you say things!! (What you really mean is, "you're doing a crap job and it's really wonky".)

The last time I went to a salon to have my hair cut in a bob, she cut one side shorter than the other, and said it looked fine that way!! 🙄 I will not be going back there!!!
