Back in the 90s, a friend of mine decided right before our college graduation that she wanted to bleach her hair. So 2 days before the graduation, she bought a Box kit. After she and her mom put the bleach on her hair, she went to her room to read for the suggested 45 minutes. However, she ended up falling asleep for 3 hours. Her hair was past her shoulders and by the time she made it to graduation, she had a pixie cut. To this day not a single chemical has touched her hair again.

Some learn their lesson the hard way. Chemicals are dangerous and shouldnt be played with by a common civilian... Get a professional. Quite a funny story though. I'd never in a million years let anything like that be put into my hair. I dont even blow dry, use curling irons, or even use hair spray. "A girl's hair is her Tiara." My grandma would often say that when she'd play wiyh my hair. Run her fingers through it and brush it saying "it feels like silk." Since she passed away i remember those kinds of things, it's one of my fondest memories of her.

90's trained stylist here, who actually highlights with a cap (because I don't want to foil myself). Spray sheen and combing prior to pulling through helps the hair glide put of the holes. Part to the side that you style your hair. Go in at an angle. And like you said, take the cap off in the dang shower after a short rinse. This should not be a painful process. 😂

I tried cap highlights back in the 80s when I was 11. My sister had cap highlights and they came out okay, so she agreed to do it to me. The only problem is that she hadn’t done the highlights herself, her friend did it for her. Her friend wasn’t there for me. Fortunately it was in the summertime so I didn’t have to go and face any classmates.

If you use an actual crochet hook, it works better. Also go on an angle instead of straight in. You can get a good look if you do things correctly and keep the cap on and tight. Your hair gets combed straight back not parted.

Hair Buddha, I really enjoy watching your videos. Back in the day (90's) I used to perm my hair and after treating it for a month I then streaked it with one of these caps. I studied what to do, watched as I had my hair professionally done and asked my hairdresser aunt how to do things. Thankfully my hair always turned out great but it is very very difficult using these caps and doing it yourself. I even reused these caps...BUT...I put a clear plastic bag on first and then the cap to prevent getting bleached spots on my head from the previous holes on the cap. Thankfully I have some natural talent and I was extremely patient. When doing the streaks I'd allow the whole day to do it so I could pull my hair through slowly and take a break in between to prevent my arms from aching. Only after I'd pulled as much hair as I wanted did I add the bleach which I checked throughout. I always got compliments and was asked where I'd gotten my hair done. I also cut it in layers and feathered it. Basically a modern (for the 90's) version of the Farrah style. To be honest I'd cut my hair much better than the hairdressers I'd been to and my perming and streaking also turned out better than the hairdressers. Unfortunately the last time I'd permed and streaked my hair (not in the same day!) professionally it was a disaster and they managed to fry my hair! After this I decided to try doing it myself because I figured I couldn't do a worse job than they'd done and I wouldn't be paying for a lousy job! That was the BEST decision I ever made! Later my mom even asked me to do her hair and I did. She also got many many compliments on her hair! But, this all said its most definitely NOT EASY doing your hair yourself. You have to know what you're doing and having talent helps.

It never ceases to amaze me, with all the technology at our fingertips and quite a few experts, like yourself, online accessible that people don't do research before attempting coloring/cutting. I had many hair fails as a young woman, but I had nothing to refer to, so I just tried to work through to get it where I wanted it. I love your reactions and have learned a great deal. I have let my hair go grey for the last three years so no more coloring, but am considering it since it seems the darker hairs want to come back in. Thank you for entertaining us!!

Hair Buddha, I have a small suggestion. Could you maybe make a video or add a small segment to your videos where people can send a picture of themselves and you give advise on what kind of color or hairstyle would fit well with the face shape and skin tone? I have a hard time figuring out what would look good on me and am sure I am not the only one. I always go to the hairdresser and she does a good job but sometimes, when she applies the exact color that I brought as a reference. It looks totally different on me. And when I hold my hair next to the reference, it really is the same color. It would be fun to see what you would recommend people. I actually wonder if I can pull off a blonde colour (and no, not platinum, to me that looks white grey like my grandma), but I have no clue what kind of tone would look good on me. I like the warmer tones, but am afraid that it will not look good on me, and realizing after investing in bleaching at the hairdressers. I asked what my skin tone is but didn’t really get a clear answer. So maybe you can do something like this or maybe a general explanation on how to figure out what your skin tone is or what will look good.

I have a question HB, if you wanted to do cap highlights but make sure to get the under side too, could you do a prting between the top and bottom layers of hair and use plastic wrap with lots of tiny holes to pick some sections, cover with wrap to stop it touching the top layer and use the cap then as normal? I wonder if it would help dostribute the lightened parts?

This is why I pay to let a professional change the colors in my hair. She watches for damage and only bleaches the roots, and if she needs to take a little color out, she does a bleach bath at the sink. Also, she makes sure the colors I want are relatively close to what I had so that she doesn't have to try to remove all of the old color. Every time I watch these, I'm more and more thankful for my stylist Kara for all her hard work.

I have done cap highlights for friends but not myself because I have very long hair. My friends had shoulder length or shorter hair and it is much easier to get the correct hair through the holes. I have never removed the cap before rinsing the hair. And adding some conditioner, removing the cap, then finishing the rinsing process works well. There has never been a bleed through or any colour where it wasn't wanted. I admit it takes a long time and I don't have the patience to even try to do my own hair.

I have fine thin hair which is gray in color. I used volumizing shampoo, and root lift spray and a velcro roller set on hot dry hair,. I had a nice volume after the roller set. I teased the crown. 20 minutes later my hair is starting to deflate. I sprayed with ultra-strong hairspray the correct way. So far so good. After 1/2 hour my hair is deflating more so I used wax on my roots and that seems to work so far as it's 1 hour since I applied the wax. I have a feeling that my hair might be very porous.

My hair is really flat, the best things I've ever used that manage to give it volume is if you can get a volumising dry shampoo or that got2b powder stuff both are hard to wash out but it's the only things that will do the trick

In one of the HB vids I watched recently, he also commented on how everybody is dyeing their hair before they have something important the next day. Since I watched that one, seriously every video has been girls dyeing their hair before a big event or something important the next day (work, school, a first meeting, vacation, and birthdays)! Last minute hair coloring is a recipe for disaster. Pick up a couple cans of root touch-up spray to cover what you need to. You can put your hair up in a slicked back bun and spray the touch-up color on your roots, on any uneven patches, or wherever you need to.

I've done cap highlights by myself... ...it takes practice, patience and more patience and maybe a friend... Buy a couple of caps and practice first..nobody could walk right away what makes you think you can nail this first time...its ok to practice first... ....rinse the product off whilst you still have the cap on... ...and then wash all the hair it will help all the hair merge back together...less pain Most if all...do not panic and start bleaching your whole head if it goes wrong...seek professional help... ...or just start there to begin with Happy capping ❤️

I have a question about hair dyes and bleach: Do they react with air? Does it matter whether you use a large tub for mixing like she does or would a small bowl be better as the surface area exposed to air is smaller?

Most dyes react when they have been mixed up, or even just the air, it oxidises and that changes colour
