The 1988 Hairspray mentioned above was the original iteration of this story, a nonmusical movie directed by Baltimore indie legend John Waters (with Ricki Lake as Tracy). When the stage musical was created in 2002, it did indeed honor that tradition (Harvey Fierstein played the role on Broadway).

Idk if someone already said it but the Flasher in “Good morning Baltimore” is played by John Waters who wrote the original 1988 film stating the incredible drag queen Divine and Ricki Lake (who actually makes a cameo as one of the talent agents that comes to miss hairspray competition). The tradition of hairspray (as said by the director of this version) is that Edna is always played by a man in homage to Divine, and Tracy is always played by plus sized girl (as opposed to casting a smaller girl and padding her, which apparently was considered for a second before the director vetoed the idea)

So, the original Hairspray was a John Waters film in the 80's that became a bit of a cult classic. Then, in the early 2000's they created a Broadway musical adaption that got really popular and won a bunch of awards, and so they made THIS movie version of the stage musical in 2007. ABC also did one of their "filmed live for tv" versions in like 2015? 2016? "Efron uses White Save!" might be the best joke I have ever heard from a reviewer for this movie 🤣 I adore this movie, but yeah, it's definitely a lot of that. They had a few cameos from both the original play and the original movie- Jerry Stiller originally played the dad. Ricki Lake (one of the agents) was Tracy in the original movie, the original stage Velma walks out of Mr. Pinkies shop, John Waters (the writer of the movie) is the flasher, and 2 of the choreographers have small parts. Oh, and the director/choreographer played one of the agents as well. There is also a song on the soundtrack that plays over the credits that is sung by 3 Tracys- Ricki Lake, Marissa Jaret Winokur (orinigal broadway tracy) and of course Nikki Blonski from this movie. This was one of the first movies I ever saw that had a fat character that didn't hate herself and her size wasn't just an easy joke- there was always a purpose and a way for her to push back. The fat characters get to be multilayered and interesting and not just the easily forgotten sidekick.

I like the message in this movie; everyone is equal and is respected. In Grease, it's less interresting. Sandy had to change so Danny can accept her; he changes a little at the end but as soon as he sees her, he removed his white jacket. I think it means that he doesn't need to make efforts in their relation, only Sandy has. That's awful! He also forced her to kiss him after he gave her a ring and didn't appologise... if he did, that wasn't sincere. That's how i saw his reaction. He's a jerk, she deserved better than him 🙂

You should really watch Chicago next! It has queen latifah singing, and also it's got that sort of framing device you mentioned where all the musical numbers are framed by one character's perception of events! Roxie is so obsessed with showbusiness that it's her way of percieving the world.

The actress for Tracy actually had very little experience at all! She was just about eighteen and still in school, working a part time job when she tried out on a whim.

im pretty sure that the lead actress was cast during some sort of casting call? like this is literally her first movie. "She auditioned for the role as a high-school student with no professional acting or singing background at the time, and beat out eleven-hundred candidates" - wiki

BTW, Jerry Stiller, "George's dad" and Ben's actual one, was the original Wilbur in the first "Hairspray" movie.

Getting a guy to be in a musical is tough enough, but getting him to put on a dress and sing about being an insecure woman is next level.

I love this musical so much, it's one of my comfort cast recordings and soundtracks! You lot really didn't have any clue what it was about was actually the best thing 😂 *edit* To answer your question about Edna yes she has always been played in drag! ❤ the original film had the legendary drag queen Divine play her, then Harvey Fierstein originated her on Broadway (Michael Ball originated after on the West End) and like you see John Travolta played her in the film version of the musical ❤

Honestly still one of my favorite movies. I saw it in theaters (already knew about the original movie but had never seen the musical). And I fell in love with it. It kickstarted my love for vintage 50s and 60s clothing too. Had a huge crush on Zac Efron after this too. I annoyed my whole family by playing and singing along to this soundtrack CD after I was supposed to have been in bed. This movie is pure nostalgia for me and honestly it never gets old for me.

You should watch Matilda the Musical next. It's so good and an excellent adaptation of the stage musical (nothing to do with the 90s film aside from shared source material). The musical has been running in the West End for over 10 years Or Chicago for more Queen Latifah
