Wigs are not and never have been a protective style. I just posted a video about how the hatred of Afro hairit is building the economy of multiple other countries and i plan on going deeper into why the protective hairstyle narrative is pushed on to us sooo much when it comes to wigs, weaves and extensions in general. We THINK wigs grow the hair because when the wig comes off, all the new growth is more obvious, however that same growth would have still happened even without the wigs and weave. Wigs and weave dont lead to hair retention. All those celebs you see taking of their wigs to show off their loongg hair, its not because of the wigs or weaves, its because of A. genetics and B. they have professional hairstylists that are fully AWARE of the damage this styles do, so they know how to go in to repair the hair and keep retention. People are more obsessed with how their hair LOOKS than how their hair FEELS and its a big issue because it leads to impatience. That same impatience is what causes people to do hairstyles back to back and it causes people to not handle their hair with care. You cant care for your hair if you are frustrated with its natural texture. EVERY hair texture has its weaknesses, there is no reason for us to act and think our hair texture is the weakest link. If our hair NEEDS to be hidden and NEEDS protective styling then so do other textures... and yet those textures dont need styling to GROW. They dont need wigs or weave to grow. This is all about mental health imo, many of us suffer from Hair Dysmorphia and its taking a looooonnngg time to heal
@RestingVirgoFace18 күн бұрын
I don't 2 strand twist as a so called protective style. I can still wash,condition and moisturize my hair in that style.

Hair dysmorphia does exist at this point because once I've started really prioritizing my natural hair more over wigs, weaves, and braids and finding ways to style my hair in its natural state, I look at wigs way differently now. I still love braids but most wigs I see on people now look a mess through my eyes. Lol most of the wigs I see black women wearing look clownish in my opinion and I never used to feel that way about wigs.
@akaced18 күн бұрын
@@RestingVirgoFace This is very important and also why i love styles like twists or mini braids. You still see and feel your hair everyday. You still get to wash and moisturize your hair. You get to FEEL your hair daily to know what it needs and what you are doing wrong / right. All that isnt the case when it comes to wigs, weaves and even other extensions. Protective styles that force you to look after your hair before going to bed, are the real deal.
@akaced18 күн бұрын
@@NamasteInYourLane I have started looking at wigs and many extensions differently too when i saw what it did to my mental health and self image. Relying on these things makes you forget your hair. You take out the braiding extensions or take off the wig and suddenly you no longer know where to start or how to do your natural hair. Its crazy to say, but wearing your natural hair out for a looong time, as a person that would previously only add extensions, is a form of therapy. You start to notice your personality change and it will make you wonder y? Once you realised why, you will automatically want to change that by feeling just as confident in your natural hair. I have stopped watching influencers who push the narrative that a "glow up" is only with wigs, weaves, long braids etc... It damages your mental health when you continously watch women that look like bash their hair and talk about how they only LOOK and FEEL good when they dont have their natural hair. I used to look at wigs etc as glam etc but nowadays i view natural hair as glam and clean. in fact, i even feel intimidated (not in a bad way, but in a positive way, dont know how to explain it) when i see another Naturalista somewhere. Its because you can not moisturize your ends when they are under wig. I would recommend anyone who wears many wigs or weaves to get a professional hair stylist for the after care. Length retention comes from keeping old hair moisturized. When your hair is cornrowed, sure you will oil the scalp but there is no way to properly hydrate your hair length. As a result, when taking them down after a month, those ends are more dry and likely to break off when detangling. Mini braids under a wig, is a much much better option.

wigs and braids are not the issue. Please let’s not put that out there. The only issues here is the fact that people are lazy to actually to take care of their hair. Wigs and braids do help with protecting the hair , especially for someone like me , with 4c hair. Always styling , touching, combing or having my hair rubbing on different materials (clothes, hats , etc ) will cause breakage for me. My hair in its natural state will cause me to have fairy knots , and unnecessary splitting ends , so my hair thrive in a straighten state BUT constantly straightening my hair will cause me more damage. This is where braiding my hair and wigs help me. I personally don’t like how braids look on me so I do wear wigs over it . I love a wig for the simple fact that I like coloured hair without altering my natural black hair colour. To me it’s a smart way of having fun with your hair without the damage. Now I keep my hair braided for 2-3 months at a time. But I wash my hair weekly , moisturizer my hair 3 times a week and cut my split ends every 3 months . My hair is very much thick , full of body, and has growth down my back, past bra strap length. My goal is to have healthy tailbone hair and personally with this routine I know I can be there quick. Before wigs were a thing, back in high school I couldn’t get my hair to past shoulder length because I always had my hands in my hair, styling and combing it every morning. Now personally I’m only growing my hair to prove to myself that I don’t need 3a hair , or to be mix to have long hair for a black girl, so I generally don’t care for my hair to be out for the world to see , I love taking off my wig every night and knowing I have sexy health hair privately. I’m not embarrassed or ashamed of my African 4c textured hair. I don’t think anyone should tell you what you should do to your hair and how you should wear it. Do what you feel is the best for you..but obviously be health about it. God bless.

No glue, or sewing and no leave out; just worn with a velvet wig grip band to protect my edges and keep the wig secure. This allowed me to moisturize and massage my scalp daily, shampoo weekly, and not have to manipulate my hair or use gels and hair dye. I don't really care to wear my hair out because of the maintenance required using manipulation and products which cause breakage. The problem is many don’t take care of their hair the way it should be. Wigs can be protective styling but how are you actually caring for your hair when it’s time to do the take down? Many women don’t know what it means to actually take care of their hair properly. Not getting regular trims, deep conditions etc…

I don’t know if this was by sheer coincidence that you’d make this video right after I was just looking for a video on this subject! I was literally googling if wigs including glue less wigs and if wigs in general were hindering hair growth for some people. I found that even wearing glueless wigs can cause oil gland blockages. Thank you for the video and Merry Christmas sister.

If you not taking care of your hair under your wigs or braids that’s what happens. You won’t know what works unless you truly take care of your hair and that may take time . Pray over your hair for wisdom god will lead you ..Keeping it moisturize eating healthy drinking lots of water taking vitamins. Working out.. and let’s add not let everyone in your hair or trimming it is key. Not everyone should be in your head. And if you do go to a stylist make sure she trust worthy .. do what works for you ❤ and christ will lead the way 1 Corinthian 11:15

Nothing will “protect” your hair if you overdo it. Wigs should be only for very special occasions and short term (like a week). Braids should also be no more than 2x a year and should still be kept clean and moisturized

I just think of hats when I think wigs same concept covers your hair no light no air. Look what happens when men wear hats too long "balding" and "thinning". Women all day everyday can say otherwise but every wig install online you see the woman getting her hair done either has a receding hairline barely any edges or thin hair.

Forgot their other defense is that their hair gets long how many have you seen long BUT thin long BUT no edges and hairline like a 50 year old man.

Do you know what salon she went to? I live in LA and I’m about to cut my locs and go loose natural and looking for salon and I found a salon that does this kind of regimen of braid down wigs/weaves 3 months then a trim deep conditioner, repeat.

A lot of synthetic and Karen fibers chew off hair it’s best to get a decent sew in that’s protected or wear a good quality wig cap and moisturize your real hair or it will break off

So, it wasn’t the wig it was not caring for the hair underneath the wig and going to a stylist whose specialty was probably just wig installs and not natural hair care? I’ve grown my natural hair plenty of times while wearing wigs and never lost my edges. Again it comes down to operator error not wigs or products in most cases. I’m totally against long term wig wear. I take my wig and wig cap off every night and keep my hair moisturized. But don’t villainize the wig when it is the person.

I think we as black women have to be ok with what it takes to have long hair. We have to be ok with our hair not lasting weeks on end. Some women need to care for their hair more than once a week (wash condition treat), and thats ok. I've been studying how other races of women take care of their hair ( dermatologists say that our scalps function the same regardless), and its all about the scalp, then they treat the hair separately The process of relearning your hair is not easy, but it'll be worth it.

It’s protecting because maybe their talking about not applying heat or color to natural hair so wigs are good for that.

Braids are one of the worst hair styles for black people. Black people need to realize hair styles should be taken out every week or couple days. Braids have taken out so many edges. Also Braiders be shaving off loose hair to make it look so perfect. Braids give people headaches also.
