Great video. Here's a tip in regards to the blown out close up flash shots; I tape a piece of white tissue paper over the flash and it helps tone down the flash. I specifically use cigarette rolling paper as it is quite strong and thin.....I have been using this method for many years on all my instant cameras as well as 35mm p&s cameras with good results. Try differing paper thicknesses/weights to achieve the result that is pleasing to your eye:)
@HaiTran7 жыл бұрын
Another viewer mentioned a similar method. Diffusing the flash would be a good alternative to bare bulb👍🏽
@joshjacobson98463 жыл бұрын
The flash definitely needs a diffuser. Fuji could make bank if they sold $10 diffuser caps for the instax line.
@Biebs14167 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the in depth yet quick video! I just wanted to point out a few things as I've had the camera for almost 3 years now. In your example of macro mode, you were too close to the subject and that's why you got a blurry and bright result. The recommended distance for the sharpest result in macro is 40-60cm. I do agree that the flash can be too bright at times but we have to remember that we can't expect the same quality on a polaroid as a DSLR. Lastly places like Costco sells the film for the cheapest I've seen. I got a 6 pack (60 film) for $36 once and 8 pack (80 film) for $44. Amazon also sells it cheaper if you buy a larger amount than just 2 packs at a time. (Any case any viewers wanted to know, I'm sure you know all about this stuff).
@HaiTran7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching the video. In response, I stated in the video that flash should not be used when taking macro photos. I don't think that this will work out in any scenario if you are at the minimum focusing distance. The flash will overpower the subject. Also, the flash is too strong because the manufacturer did not invest money in the metering system and implement the technology to adjust flash strength, not simply because it is a Polaroid-like camera. There are plenty of discontinued cameras that can give amazing photos via a Polaroid photo.

Hai Tran how about liplay or sq6? Do they still give out the same picture quality?
@HaiTran5 жыл бұрын
The minor differences are so minute that they are practically the same in my opinion. The square films, of course, are larger so they have more resolution but it's realistically the same thing in a larger format.
@4174j5 жыл бұрын
Hai Tran i head from a friend square films are relatively more expensive so for someone who would want the pictures for memories and room decor, I think I’d stick with neo classic. Thanks for the insight!

You can’t expect to get more/larger sized film for the same price. Also, I personally hate Instax mini film because it’s tiny and hard to make out details of the photos. In this sense, I’d rather pay more with the larger films than waste any money on the smaller Instax mini.

Well... These cameras really are meant for the fun of it. While you can take some really cool shots, they're for the people who're into that point-and-shoot, crappy vintage style. You either love it or hate it. I doubt most people using these expect (Or even know) a 1/2000 shutter speed or have a problem with blown out whites. These cameras are just fun.

Thinking about this for my older father with Parkinsons. He has new cats and can't handle complex. So many are all positive or all negative, but you get right into the important details. Well done.

Thanks for the compliments. About your father, if he has noticeable/uncontrollable shakes, I would highly advise against this camera. I would suggest something that you can put on a tripod and use a timer. That way he’ll get sharp images without suffering from hand shakes.

@@HaiTran Thanks for the advice. My dad hasn't gotten that bad yet, but has trouble writing and fine control. He recently got a couple of kittens and wants to be able to take photos of them. His older SD card camera is too complex, and I have to print his photos, which is a pain for both of us. I went with the Instex Wide 300 because it's basically a point and shoot, not a lot of settings or modes to worry about, it's film is actually cheaper than the square, and he'll be able to see the larger photos well. the large format should work for him. @HaiTran7 жыл бұрын
I don’t think there is such a camera that would match your needs exactly. If you’re in a dark place, you’ll have to use flash to get anything with this camera. If flash is off, the shutter speed will drop and any moving subject will be blurred. An instant camera is not what you’re looking for. A more traditional camera will fit your needs better. Then just get this amzn.to/2CaqOq5 to print out your images in Instax form. But if you absolutely want an instant film camera, then yes, the Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 would be your best choice.

@HaiTran7 жыл бұрын
+Jessica Rodriguez I’m assuming you’re talking about the Polaroid Snap Touch and Fujifilm Instax Mini 90. It depends on what kind of experience you want. The Polaroid Snap Touch is essentially a digital camera that can print while the Fujifilm Instax Mini 90 is more like a traditional Polaroid camera where it just gives you instant film. They are very different in my opinion. I wanted the traditional Polaroid experience so the Instax was the obvious choice.

All Instax cameras have their flaw as the cameras are not something that the manufacturers themselves take too seriously. These cameras are more so meant to be a gimmick and just for fun. If you don't care about features, just buy the cheapest one or whichever one you like the look of. As far as features, the Instax Mini 90 is among the best.

Other companies make Instax cameras but I don't use them so can't comment. Also, the camera is the cheap part of shooting Instax. If you shoot a lot, the film will really start to add up.

@HaiTran6 жыл бұрын
Performance on all Instax cameras is roughly going to be the same. They are somewhat gimmicks and are meant for fun. If you're serious about capturing subjects, you should really look into getting a more traditional camera. Instax is not the way to go for capturing fine details.

I'm thinking of using this camera for guests to take pictures of themselves at my wedding. I'll keep the photos after as a keepsake. With people probably mostly taking selfies, do you think this is a good camera? If so, which settings do you recommend? Would really appreciate your input! THANKS!!
@HaiTran7 жыл бұрын
Do you plan on buying a bunch of these and distributing them at the wedding or just one camera and letting people take turns? If you're buying a bunch of the Instax Mini 90s, I think it may be more beneficial for you to just pick up some disposable 35mm film cameras and hand those around. That would save you a lot of money. If you're just buying one Instax Mini 90 and letting people take turns, then yes, I think this camera will work fine. In terms of settings, just turn it on and go. It'll essentially be in automatic mode and that'll most likely be the best option. Party mode will also work if you're taking photos with indoor lighting and flash, but I would recommend to just shoot in automatic and not have to worry about teaching everyone how to use the camera. Just enjoy your weddings and don't worry about the camera too much. It's an instant film camera so the photos are more for memories than anything award winning. Congratulations on the wedding!

The Upper Left USA well my actual idea is to use it as the "guestbook"! So I would purchase a photo album, guests would take turns taking the pictures of themselves or of each other, and write a note with their photo! So just the one camera.

Hey man, great review vid. Thank you! I think the camera crosses the line between photography and art, in such a way as there is more of the feeling you get, when you draw or paint something, rather than just take a pic. Also, the random imperfections are in themselves - unique additions to the composition. Have you found your eye drawn again and again to the little physical images these things create? It's a slight sidestep to reality, again, imperfect but somehow very real - like all of us. It's a joy to see instant photography re-emerge, don't you think?
@HaiTran6 жыл бұрын
When you buy something like this, you shouldn’t expect technical perfection but a fun that other traditional cameras will not give you.

Which do you recommend? Mini 8, Mini 9, Wide 300 or Mini 90?
@HaiTran7 жыл бұрын
It depends on how big of a film you want. Instax wide is much bigger than Instax mini, so if that's something that you want, then the Wide 300 is the clear winner. If you don't care about film size, then the Mini 90 is the most advanced camera of the ones listed. It just depends on your needs.

Great review video. So here is what my need is: I want an "instant film" (you know I'm just dying to say poloroid, it's like "band-aid" or "Kleenex") camera for very simple projects... I want to create photo books for my church (I do wedding and seasonal decor) to keep basic records of what decor was hung where ... What table arrangements are available, a snapshot of the inside of a box before I store it... Not really so much subjects but I want the photos to look decent. Is over exposure or what you call "blown out" just a typical downside of most instant film? Is this going to be satisfactory for my need if I still want a fast decent photo? I'm no photo pro at all, and I can't afford to waste film either, but I just want a "shoot" and "slap in file" without printing and blah blah... Suggestions?
@HaiTran7 жыл бұрын
Fujifilm Instax is your only real viable source when it comes to instant films today. No camera is going to be perfect as they are meant to be more as a fun gimmick, nothing serious. That being said, the Instax Mini 90 is probably going to be up there as possibly the best Instax Mini camera. It's the best that I've tried without a doubt. I would say to give it a try, but there is going to be a learning curve. There really is no way around it. Either you want instant film and are willing to deal with the issues like those I mentioned or instant film is not for you.
@birdpeoplelasvegas19897 жыл бұрын
The Upper Left USA what are your thoughts on one of those little mini photo printers for smart phone with the ink/paper cartridges.... Seems they are about the same price and photo is about the same cost. Perhaps less chance of waste if I can edit or retake a photo I'm not happy with before I print...?
@HaiTran7 жыл бұрын
I think it’s all about the user experience that you want. The printers will not give you the Polaroid experience, it’s just a printer. If that’s what you’re looking for, just print on glossy photo paper and cut to size. You’ll save even more money that way if what you’re looking for is printed photos. The Instax line gives you a Polaroid like experience.
@birdpeoplelasvegas19897 жыл бұрын
The Upper Left USA I totally see what your saying. I think what attract me is more the ability to just get it in my album right away and not as much the "fun" of the camera (although it's cool) Appreciate your advice. Good luck on the channel. 👍

Hi! I was considering buying this camera, but I already have a mini 8. I would like to get an instant camera that’s basically the same but with a larger/wider picture. I’ve been thinking of the Polaroid classic something 2, but if anyone has advice or a better suggestion I would love to hear it!
@HaiTran6 жыл бұрын
What do you mean by “larger/wider picture”? As in a larger film?
@sleepingredwolf6 жыл бұрын
Super late reply, but you should consider the Instax wide 300! The photos are twice as wide as those of the Instax Mini series and cost pretty much the same price, and the actual camera is only about 90USD. It definitely doesn't have as many creative modes as the Neo Classic 90, but if you don't plan on using them, this camera is pretty solid. As for the Polaroid Onestep 2, its film is manufactured by the Impossible Project and is very expensive- afaik the film costs about 25USD per 8 images. Hope this helped, although you probably don't need this anymore!

They’re all going to suck on some level. No Instax type camera is going to be perfect. They’re more gimmicky and meant to be for fun, nothing professional. Just get one, shoot and be happy with the results. The Instax Mini 90 is going to suck less than others though.
