From the ancient Kahuna of Hawaii, this meditation technique is one of my all time favorite practices. It goes so deep! You'll see why.

Hello Forrest! This is a wonderful technique, thanks a lot. It reminds me of an experience I once had: I was “trying” to meditate but I was restless because I was anxious to experience something “big”, then suddenly I “heard” a voice saying: stop being an arrow, you always be searching, be a cup so you can receive”. It is a peaceful experience being a cup 😊

Dude, I have been like a Pavlov's dog over the last month with negative self talk, anxiety, inability to relax and extreme mood shifts. I truly considered seeing a doctor... Then I tried HRV breathing that you suggested, I have done it consistently here and there for 2 days and, suddenly, my mind let go, it become optimistic, spontaneous. WOW! You hacker!!! Thank you!

Awesome, Forrest! When you are ruminating, your eyes tend to go down and fixate in one point. It is like being closed to the world and frozen in time (trauma). That's why the Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing treatment also works for many people, I feel. Thanks for sharing! Blessings and blissings!

This is so wonderful Forrest - and what a fabulous story about those brothers. I have suffered terrible anxiety all my life, sometimes it has prevented me from leaving the house. The hardest part is being fine for a few years and then getting hit with a bad panic attack. This summer that happened to me , worse than ever and i started throwing up. Well. I stopped going out during the day. Going out only at night i feel safer in the dark and quiet - - -but one night i felt that turn in my stomach and thought NO- We are going to be here . And i looked up through the pines at a bright star (Sirius) and let my vision expand like you describe. Immediately i felt a wave go down my body and ground me like a cool breeze. I am so grateful for this, and it's wonderful to do. Tonight i sat in my backyard and tested how much of the sky and trees i could see. It would have never occurred to me that my 'panic' would make me like a predator - but - now it makes sense . What great gifts you share.

Funny you should mention the car... Ever since I started driving I noticed this phenomenon would occur on its own and I would have to catch myself. I only learned later what it was. It still happens and I am used to monitoring it. I also believe it happens when we young quite naturally but we forget about it. I spoke with some friends and asked them if they remembered being in a room with their parents going about daily chores and then a feeling of expansion and calm would come over. Basically Hakalau would just happen of its own accord. And yes many friends recall this occurence. Just thought it be fun to share. Thanks Forrest for all your posts!!

This and your last video helped a lot to confirm some intuitions I was uncertain about regarding your teachings. I actually had hakalau save my life while driving recently - I wasn't trying, but I had been practicing it with HRV at work for about half an hour and was still aware of the peripheral vision on the drive home, and when someone tried to merge into my lane right as I was pulling past his blind spot I spotted the situation instantly, stayed calm and hit the breaks and leaned on the horn, lol. I still find that paying attention to the sides of vision is good while driving, although I can see the problem once it becomes so natural to expand that you could just yourself in it and forget about the road, so I avoid trying to go too deep into it. But it seems to me to induce an almost ninjalike ability to actually respond to what's happening around you. Hakalau is such a simple, easy, mysterious and fascinating practice. I've felt a strong pull towards it since I started playing with the peripheral vision years ago, and I'm so grateful that you've taken it and explained the context of how it affects the brain and how it fits into meditation with so much clarity and detail. Like you allude to, a sense of meaning seems to just well up from the wide open view and there's such an odd sense of satisfaction in becoming aware of more and more and just expanding into space.

That is beautiful! Fantastic! Yes! I was just mentioning to someone that all of the well-seasoned martial artists that I had the privilege to study with all found themselves going into this ninja-like state as you say when they practiced being attacked by multiple attackers. When you do that over and over again for years the brain naturally adapts to being more aware in all directions.

Hey Forrest, first I want to say I like all your videos and find them very helpful. Second, I thought you would be interested to know, this is also a technique taught in Rinzai Zen. Although it still seems to be rare in Zen, I was taught this by Meido Moore Roshi (and his authorized students) of Korinji Monastery in Wisconsin. He also writes about it in his 1st book, using the same finger exercises to expand peripheral vision as you do! We were taught to maintain that vision throughout the day, through chores, exercises and everything! Anyway, thank you again!

I did it as I explained it here. I entered into my deepest Low-Idle-State and then adopted the attitude of expansion. Can't decide if I would put Hakalau at the top of my learnings from this channel, or HRV, or breathing upon chakras, all have a very special place :) But it is definitely the quickest one to make difference, just super instantaneous. Also I wanted to ask about if you knew about Intrinsic Cardiac Nervous system? It is a relatively new discovery of an independent brain-like structure in the heart (also there are similar ones found in the gut and the genital area), which I find super interesting.

Synchronycity is everything. Yesterday, while practising on a nice spot in the sun on the waterside, I did my HRV and hakalau at the same time and within a few minutes my hearing changed. Sound remained but became a bit muffled and at a distance. Would that by any chance be the same kind of phenomenon as dilating the eyes? And thank you again, I been looking into this subject for about two years now, did some reading and searching. Your directions have proven to be the most valueable of all.

Hi Forrest! Thank you so much for the video! Very valuable information. I want to ask a question about space expansion. Have you tried to do it? I guess, it’s the same principle as in Hakalau. Usually I do space expansion in four different directions, north, south, east, west, and plus two directions: up and down. I expand myself in each of those directions to my room, to my neighbor’s apartment, another building, then street, then another street block, just expanding to the whole city, then Neigbour’s states, whole country, another countries, whole world, whole planet, whole universe.. then you can see spirit light. But also, you can receive some information from the space around you, before it happens. Have you experienced something like that? Have you experienced receiving some info from space around you right before it will happen? Would like yo hear your story! Thank you so much!!
