I love uni. It took me years to learn to love it because I grew up in Chicago where the Uni wasn't fresh and the taste was fermented . But then I visited family in Italy and had my first sea urchin right out of the water and I was sold on it . Ever since then I chose fresh uni whenever I can .

I love uni. As a youngster in HI, I would go with my grandmother to gather uni (in HI we call it Wana, pronounced: va-na), & gobble it down. One of my favorite seafoods.

If you don't like uni usually, you might have tried more uni sourced from Santa Barbara than Japanese Uni. Japanese uni is the only kind I like - very small tongues with wonderful sweet oceanic creaminess, kind of like a scallop crossed with Ikura! I have it as a dessert at the end of a meal of sushi. The uni from Santa Barbara is more bitter, and reminds me of earwax :( it's also more pleasant for me to eat uni texturally if I try a tiny taste over sushi rice so the uni is more like a sauce on the rice.

I'm with Satoshi, uni is delicious. And expensive. But so much more affordable and fresh in Japan. The chirashi breakfasts looked great and made me hungry.

Or should I call it donburi, like you did? I'm used to calling it chirashi when there is fresh fish or seafood placed over rice in the bowl. Such as the uni, tuna, crab, ikura, etc.

Good uni is very mind blowing.. In California a box tray of Hokkaido Uni goes for 150$, while another good substitute Santa Barbara is of the same quality and only $70 a tray.

This was a great video! What an amazing breakfast! I've never seen so many different kinds of donburi on a menu. They looked so delicious. I would love to have that for breakfast! As for the ice cream, Satoshi was brave for trying the squid ice cream. I know that sometimes squid ink is used for coloring foods, and it doesn't change the taste. It seems like it was used that way in the ice cream. When I was little, we had an ice cream store which made their own ice cream. They had a similarly-colored ice cream, but it was licorice. For those who like licorice, it was scrumptious! We really enjoyed it as children. I'll be thinking of the Hakodate Market today. So much to see there! Thank you for showing us.

Not exactly a very exotic flavor but he would always say no no I'm fine. It used to upset me as a youngster because I wanted to try everything and there was dad with his vanilla cone! LOL

I actually like uni; I tried my very first this year with sushi, and it was very soft. It melted in my mouth. Squid sashimi is so mushy and has a slimy texture, so that's a no-no to me; thought maybe I'd like it, too.

I have had uni twice. The first time, I was not mentally prepared for the texture. I seem to recall my eyes watering, as I tried to swallow it... I couldn’t spit it out, because the sushi chef was standing right across from me, and I didn’t want to be rude. The second time, I was prepared... and to be honest, I enjoyed the taste.

I love seafood. I was so jealous of all the food you got to eat. I would even have tried the squid ink gelato too😋. The one thing I don't like about sea food is that if you live more inland, it's hard to get and can be expensive 💸💸💸 at least it is where I live anyway😓😅when ever we vacation at the beach we always go to the restaurants that offer fresh local seafood because we know it will be sooooo worth it😋

Well, this was cool and some of those crabs were huge!!! Love it one was trying to escape. I have no problems to try the squid ink one. the color is a pretty silver grey!

Wow the food looks so incredibly fresh and delicious. It looks like art. Most places here in the US could not even come close honestly. For some reason I have never been able to acquire a taste for Uni. It reminds me of the Smell of Clorox Bleach or something for some reason and also do not like the texture combined with it being cold. Feels like eating raw brains or something lol.

KZbin just photobombed Instagram! Lolol! The food looked so beautiful it almost made me want to try seafood. But then I remembered it was seafood. >___> And wooooow! I can't believe you both ate squid ink ice cream! Whaaaat!? If it didn't taste salty or like sea food then what DID it taste like? What could you compare it to? I could never eat squid, as in grade school that was the animal we had to dissect for science and label each part and find its brain, heart, ink sacs, etc. So I can never look at a squid without realizing what I've done.....hahaha!
