Al, Great piece of wood. Great, organic design even though you would have preferred the other orientation. Funny. My eye so wanted the top of the shape that you did end up with to be the bulbous end. Like a hot air balloon. Wide at the top and narrow at the bottom. Also, great instruction throughout this video.

I totally agree about the lathe. I'm an old guy now but I've been a carpenter/construction supervisor for a good portion of my life. Over my life I've been nibbled on by tools that have sharp spinning blades or bits. My favorite tools now are the band saw and the lathe and also nice hand tools. Another excellent video. Thanks!

Thank you very much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it my friend. I love my band saw as well but am a bit intimidated by it. Hello there my friend, excellent job, and I know you changed your mind in the orientation but the piece is still definitely a wow...! I think the piece is absolutely beautiful...!! Another awesome piece my friend... I totally agree with you about the banjo extention, I have one with my lath and I hate it, I’ve had my this lathe for about six years and I’ve never used it. I don’t know why they don’t just make the banjo bigger/longer... All the best, cheers...
@AlFurtado
@AlFurtado 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you very much for such a nice compliment. I agree even though I have wished I had one of those arms on occasion I agree they should just give us longer banjos. . Those darn banjos cost as much as a lathe. in my case I need one as my banjo does not pass the 12" capacity that the lathe was designed for and I turn 16" to 18" pieces LOL

Fabulous piece Al, I agreed with everything you said about safety etc, I was an engineering centre lathe turner and like you on your wood lathe; I’ve chucked up some weird and wonderful things over the years and the main factors when doing such things are safety awareness, as you pointed out; don’t stand in the firing line... and having confidence in your equipment and your ability, having confidence means you should automatically know when you’re doing something you shouldn’t be doing and to stop doing it. Sorry I’ve gone on a bit, I love your videos and the pieces you turn out, keep them coming mate..👍👍👍👍👍🇬🇧🇺🇸

Al - I am not sure if I would agree or disagree with your statement on the lathe being the safest tool in the shop (I am leaning towards agreeing as I become more proficient with my lathe). But I can most certainly understand the logic and being a computer scientist - logic is a good thing to me 😎. The piece is beautiful - I strive to become able to see what is in the raw wood to produce such things.

Certainly gave you a bit of a workout Al, but I think that going against the “usual” approach with burls paid off. It’s a very unique & eye catching piece. All the best from the UK Geof

Thank you very much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it my friend. This was indeed an odd burl and just wasn't sure on the best approach. This one didn't talk to me much LOL.Take care and be safe my friend.

Hi Mr. Furtado I prefer what you did here as half & half...more interest... It's another beautiful piece of studio art and will make a fine addition I'm sure to all the other pieces you've done...

It's got Wow factor to me, but I understand your feelings, too. You are the creator, and if you aren't satisfied, it matters a lot. I think that wood gave you a lot, but you saw the piece every step and so you know better than we do, even if most comments are very favorable. Loved the lesson on safety and How To and How NOT To. You are an excellent teacher as well as an artist. (( By the way, even that red sawdust was gorgeous! ))

Thank you very much for such a nice compliment. I really appreciate. I had to laugh at the red sawdust being gorgeous LOL but as far as a teacher I am not sure about that. I just try emphasizing on what I think is important or what comes to mind at the time.

You’re far too hard on yourself Al, that piece is so beautiful my friend. We’re always so critical of our own work - in this case, the finished work is awesome! 👍🍺

LOL, Carter made a good choice to get tools to because you beat the crap out of that gouge and it keeps on ticking just like that old lathe. I don't know how I would have turned that piece. It's hard to decide for sure but it turned out stunning anyhow. Per square inch you probably got more of the burl his way. Cheers my friend, Lee

Thank you my friend. I hope Carter and Son feel the same way. I have spoken to Valerie Crater a few times and she seems happy with the choice they made but I think she is lying LOL. I am one that hates the idea of pushing anything on anyone LOL

i think its an awesome piece. I,m not sure how you feel about this, but i believe the wood sometimes tells you what it is going to be. It might not be the wow you were looking for, but i,m sure it has the wow factor for others. Every time I think one of my pieces are just OK , someone flips over it. Sorry if this was corny. just my thought.

Thank you very much for watching and commenting. I really appreciate it my friend. Yeah I agree that you might think of something just being OK and get an amazing result from others. When my wife and daughter saw it they thought it was the greatest thing.I will learn to keep my opinions to myself LOLBe safe take care
