Freshly cut Brazilian Pepper tree turned into a beautiful Genie Bottle. The worm eaten holes I the neck area posed more trouble than I anticipated. Beauty doesn't come without challenges.

Al, you are the absolute master of natural and unusual shapes of lathe working. I find even your speaking fascinating. I have learned not to fear the working of any type of wood because you have shown me how to view the wood and shape no matter how or what kind of wood I wind up with. Thank you for your videos.

Well Al, you did it again, I'm sure you are the only turner on you tube who creates amazing pieces from what others would steer well clear of. At one point I thought it looked like a piece of pottery!

Thank you Peter for the nice compliment. If I discarded all the pieces that should not go on the lathe than life would be boring LOL I say the uglier the piece is the better the outcome.

Yak on my brother! It's your channel and you are usually giving good information about what's going on and why the lathe is doing what it's doing with the piece. Great info for those of us who haven't turned much. I build lots of things on my channel, thinking of building a 12" drill powered lathe. So I appreciate all the yak!...LOL

Al, I can't tell you how much I love the practicality in your way of thinking. Indifference to failure of intent, allowing you .......... demanding you, to improvise, challenge your bean and come up w/ imaginative ways to proceed. The lessons learned here, by watching your struggles are invaluable to average, less confident, wood turners (or any craftsmen for that matter) like me. It proves that mistakes happen, weather human & self inflicted or the material properties themselves, and w/ a little indifference, persistence, a little vision and a will to resolve issues and complete a task or goal, everyone can create something special, despite struggle and misfortune. I can't help but feel apologetic that I have not the vocabulary to applaud your where with all 1/2 as much as needed !! Love your work, your video's and instructional narration. Please keep up the invaluable and generous sharing. Coffee time, Steph_Lousiana

Al: Enjoy the video as always. I have never had success turning a vase in a side grain orientation, the pith is always a source of trouble. But there is nothing wrong with trying something an ending up with an artistic piece. Good job.

Thank you Paplo. I am sorry to hear that you have not been successful on side grain turning. I have many videos that the orientation is setup this way, the only thing is the pit might get some small cracks but if it is thin enough it's usually not a problem.Take care

@sumochop360
@sumochop360 7 жыл бұрын
why don't you go past 300 grit? does the wood become to smooth or the shine on the finished project become to bright for your taste? I'm just curious.
@AlFurtado
@AlFurtado 7 жыл бұрын
I use to go to 400g than apply sanding sealer and would sand that with 1200g. I started using Yorkshire grit and I must say it is a great product. Sanding to 300 and than using the grit and finalizing with fine steel wool will give me the ultimate finish. Sometimes though I do not seek an ultra shine so I skimp on the 300g as well and only go up to 200g and finish as above. see my video shine on a dime

Ignoring the break, how were you planning to hollow the bottom part? That's a very long reach for a tool.
@AlFurtado
@AlFurtado 7 жыл бұрын
you are correct a very long reach indeed. I was not going to flare out the bottom much but was going to do as much as I could. I have done much deeper vases but was able to get the tool rest somewhat inside, This one was going to be a much bigger challenge for sure.
