Half-Hanged Mary | Morbid | Podcast

In the depths of American history there are few examples of mass hysteria that loom larger than the Salem witch trials of 1692. As horrific as it was, it was far from the only example of witch-hunting in Massachusetts’ history. In fact, ten years before hysteria over black magic gripped the village of Salem, similar accusations of witchcraft were aimed at Mary Webster of Hadley, a small village in Western Massachusetts.

For anyone who is interested in the Salem Witch Trials, there is a FANTASTIC podcast called Unobscured. The second season focuses on these witch trials, is 12-episodes, and super in-depth about the events leading up to the trials, the accused and their families, the accusers, the surrounding communities and the social and political climate leading up to and during the chain of events. Cannot recommend it enough.

Maybe I missed it, but did ANYONE think she was a witch after she literally swung by her neck from a tree and then climbed out of her snow grave?! If I was beep bopping around that town back then and saw this, I'd definitely think that would be considered concrete evidence of a witch rather than a baby fussing or whatever other shaningans they came up with.

What's sad is we are living in a modern witch hunt in the guise of false accusations and MeToo. Also the child abuse hysteria in the 80's was terrifying.
