The response to that is to turn it into an invite only (like what they did with E3). You see the studios have so much clout they can pick their audiences now. We live in an age where companies get to chose their customers, and the customers soon can not refuse to pay.

@@calimarine92 I think it's just a matter of cost, both money and time. Not only will you be spending money on tickets, lodging and food just to be there at the event but each panel you attend means waiting in line for hours. Those new fans might be ultra - but they're not real Marvel fans.. they just celebrate the movies to an ridiculous degree. Hugo/Nebula/Pulitzer winning author Michael Chabon is the showrunner, and the show was the idea of acclaimed Trek novelist Kirsten Beyer (famous for uncrapping Voyager with her beloved and best-selling post-series novels). Beyer, Alex Kurtzman and Akiva Goldsman met with Stewart, who took the meeting with the intention of turning the project down but was intrigued enough by their discussion to ask them for a three-page document outlining Beyer's ideas. Goldsman then invited Chabon to work on the project as well and the four ultimately produced a 34-page document that they sent to Stewart. Needless to say, he loved it. In Beyer and Chabon I trust. This looks amazing

Kurtzman and Orci's obsession with destiny/chosen one narratives in Star Trek for the last decade is a huge part of the problem. It doesn't suit the humanist themes and setting, and Kurtzman doesn't appear to be interested in engaging with that contradiction; it's just a trope for him to hang his plot from.

YES that pissed me off so much with Discovery! The implication that Michael was ‘the chosen one’ and this weird bio-essentialism with Saaru was so irritating because it just didn’t fit with anything Star Trek, and it meant we barely knew any of the other characters at all. A main plot that could have worked, which was actually already set up in Deep Space 9, would have been Picard discovering that the Federation was corrupt. It would've been perfect, and I just naively assumed that was what the next Star Trek series was going to be about after DS9. I haven't watched Star Trek since then, except for the movie remake. His way of using his intellect and reason to solve problems, with his retirement being a possible issue, yeah they missed the boat and I think this IP is done just like Star Wars I genuinely am baffled that the whole thing was dropped and they instead pursued 293847 other series that were essentially the same idea as TNG but shittier and more generic.
