@Qwerty Scorcese is known is known for continuity errors as an artistic choice. Basically, if he feels something is a better take or performance, he prioritizes that over the take that preserves continuity and he's talked about this on record. It's a decision that seems to pay off for him.

Leo is in a class of actors along with people like Anne Hathaway - they try REALLY, REALLY HARD. In fact, that's actually the problem - they try _too_ hard. The best acting performances appear effortless. Heath Ledger's Joker is effortless - you don't see someone trying to be The Joker, *you see The Joker*. When I see Anne Hathaway in Interstellar, I don't see an astronaut or a scientist, I see someone who tried really really hard to sound like one. That's the difference between Leo and Kate's performances in _Titanic_ as well. Ironically though, Anne Hathaway's Catwoman worked really well because Selina Kyle is a character who is _also trying really hard_ to keep up a facade of confidence, so this quality in her performance actually helps the character. It also probably helps Leo's performance in _The Departed_ since he's playing an undercover cop. In other words, when either of them are acting as characters who are themselves acting, the performance is great!
@lennartmeyerstenfjeld947310 жыл бұрын
I agree with everything, except I didn't like Leo's performance in The Departed for the times when he is not supposed to be in character as a crook. Like how his character is supposed to be tortured and on drugs and having psychological problems, and you never ever see it in his acting until an hour in when he just SAYS it, and the audience goes: "Wait, is the character supposed to have all those problems? Never saw that in his acting, except for this one moment."

Seemed way too harsh on Don Jon, especially considering you criticised it for an ending it didn't have. Jon actually says straight-up in his ending monologue that they haven't "fallen in love", they just feel connected to eachother in a way he hasn't felt anymore. The point is him realising that there's more to women than romance and fucking, there's the part where you form meaningful relationships. Sure, it's kinda shallow and obvious, but it's certainly not as boring as you're painting it to be.
@splewy11 жыл бұрын
I thought Don Jon was a pretty smart social commentary about modern relationships too. You have the man who has completely unrealistic expectations of a relationship based on what he sees in porn, and you have the woman, who has equally unrealistic expectations of a relationship based what she sees in in romance movies.
@paulnevius546110 жыл бұрын
My issue with Don Jon was kind of what they said in the review; it really lacked tone. It wasn't funny enough to be a comedy, and it wasn't dramatic enough to be a drama. Now some of that falls onto marketing, which clearly tried to make it look like a comedy, but at the same time, you can really feel JGL's lack of directing experience in this movie. Some good performances, especially from Don Jon's parents, but I feel like the script could've been so much more if it had been handled by a director with a bit more seasoning. It wasn't a bad movie, but it wasn't very good either, and in the end the worst thing a movie can be is mediocre.
@splewy10 жыл бұрын
Paul Nevius Yeah the marketing for Don Jon was hugely misleading. It made the movie look like comedy, which it really wasn't.
@LackingSaint10 жыл бұрын
Paul Nevius The lack of tone thing has never bothered me with movies; as an Englishman, i'm used to almost all media blurring the lines between Comedy and Drama. I actually really like when i'm not sure whether to laugh at something or not, and I like it when media tries to approach comedic topics with a more serious angle and vice versa.
@paulnevius546110 жыл бұрын
LackingSaint Well to be clear, when I say tone I mean how a movie "feels". It doesn't need to be a rigid genre structure so much as a context that holds the events of the movie in place. Take Wolf of Wall Street for example. It alternates between pretty hilarious comedy scenes RIGHT into really serious and uncomfortable drama. You go from laughing to almost cringing at the drop of a hat, but the tone of the movie remains consistent. That's what I mean when I say Don Jon didn't really have a "tone". It didn't really know what it was.

I really like the focus with Wolf Street if having that rush of living in excess, like when you see the detective character coming back from his day at work in the Subway after nabbing Jordan and it actually puts the rich lifestyle in prospective - they still do a great job of portraying him as an asshole though

I disagree concerning Coppola. He made 3 great films: Godfather 1 + 2, plus Apocalypse Now. Hasn't done Jack Shit since. And I couldn't disagree with them more on DiCaprio

Godfather part 2 is so superior in every way to Godfather 1 that I can't even watch the first one anymore

Just rewatched this episode and I realized the genius of the opening skit now, almost 3 fucking years later
