After Earth also has heavy Scientology undertones. If memory serves, the final fight is at a volcano, where, if you don't know, the aliens were tossed into by Xenu. Also the whole concept of conquering your negative emotions (thetans, or whatever they freaking call them). I actually enjoyed the movie, though only because I enjoyed picking apart the Scientology propaganda.

@AuDHDarling
@AuDHDarling 4 жыл бұрын
I have a theory that the "real" Will Smith is closest to his After Earth character. Actors don't need to be good at experiencing emotion, just faking it. His apparent charismatic and sociable nature in interviews could be as much of an act as it is when he's playing a character written that way. He's also said in multiple interviews that the relationship between the father and son in the movie reflects their dynamic at home, and that he was using the movie as a way "to parent" Jaden. And this movie was his baby. He called up Shamalan to ask him to make this movie as a vehicle for his son to become an action star. He *wanted* to play an emotionally detached character who is pragmatic and calculating without empathy for others. It's like he's trying to send subtle clues to tell us that he too is emotionally detached from other people, including his family, and is coldly attempting to use his son as a tool to keep himself and his brand in the limelight and continue to profit from it. Not saying that this is definitely the case. And if Will Smith is like that, I don't want to suggest that people with antisocial personality or sociopathic traits are necessarily bad or dangerous because of the way their brains and emotions work. I've just always gotten a vibe that he is not who he presents himself to be.

I hope that magnatron had some solar-radiation absorbing system, to shoot a laser beam at whoever tried to copy that tape... After Earth, that is.

Has anyone noticed that this episode both reviews a Will Smith film and includes a reference to G.I. Jane? Prophetic...

Watching this now, listening to them talk about Will Smith and his kids, now with their attempted careers failed, he made Gemini Man, where he plays opposite of his de-aged self! It's like he just decided he had to do it himself because kids weren't talented. Lol. 😂
