Honestly for me, the jankiness of HL2DM is what I love about it. Really goofy and floaty. Much like how old TF2 use to be along with CSS back in the day, no so serious or competitive, just good old fun. Which makes me sad as most of the games I grew up with are either dead or CSGo/CoD competitive wanna be's. Makes me sad that we can't have fun any more in games and how its all about that kill streak, your team getting to some championship or proving to be the best 360 no-scope player around and trying to speed run the game. Makes me sad that fun isn't allowed any more in games and how its all serious e-sports and speed runs now.

My dad and his friends loved this game. When he was disabled towards the end of his life he would just spend hours on it. He was the most amazing fighter I’ve ever seen. After he died, I was old enough to play myself and actually compete, there’s so few servers around, it wasn’t long before I wandered into their old server and met all his friends. They were all just as good. They were so fast, I still can’t keep up with them. I have no idea how they do it. It must be the years of experience in the source engine.

My first ever shooter game was Half-Life 2: Deathmatch when I was like 4 or 5 years old I started watching my brother play it. He was around 20 at that time and used to live in our Basement lol and he played it daily. Eventually I asked him if I can play it, and so I did. Was a lot of fun, i got destroyed obviously, but still! We kind of took turns, switch every map After a while my brother went to the "Bundeswehr" (German armed forces) here in germany (i was like 6-7 at that time) so he rarely was home, maybe sometimes on weekends, that always made me sad, but he never took his PC with him obviously so i could play half life 2 deathmatch and other source games all on my own and that was so cool to have freedom and explore the pc gaming world for the first time as before I had never really played video games anyway. My brother is doing well now, he has his own apartment, wife, job, everything well for him. Half-life 2 deathmatch has a special place in my heart and I miss some people that I met on there and now don't know what/where they are up to. Got my own PC recently and I still play it, rarely, just whenever i feel like it.

Also guys I recommend the server "Zeitgeist" on half life 2 deathmatch. It's my favorite! you can switch models, there's funny say sounds, and there are some special abilites you can use but you have to grind to actually get them and give you a little advantage over others (other than skill xd) and it also has improved/faster movement and it doesn't feel janky at all unlike the vanilla movement. There's tons of maps and they are all usually high quality and most important of all its your classic deathmatch mode. No capture the flag or some other shit, its just killing others :)) but they do have another server on team deathmatch mode instead im mentioning all of this since the video said, most servers are bad or weird, so I decided i recommend it

I played HL2DM a lot in the mid to late 2010's, and had a lot of fun with it. Learning to yo-yo grenades is like learning to rocket jump in TF2, and once you get good at it you're really powerful. In my gaming I met the owner of the oldest running server on Steam, one that started in 2004 shortly after the release of the game. I played this server for several months and befriended him a year or two before he passed. As far as I'm concerned, SoCal #1 is the best server on HL2DM, and he made a real community there. Oh, dude. Back in 2008/2009 my graphics card went bad and the only thing in my steam library that was playable (besides the valve titles in GoldSrc) was half life death match. I've ended up putting more than 300 hours on it. The community in Brasil (my country) had only two or three servers, with modified maps, but to enhance the death match aspect of it, not to mess around with gravity and stuff and oh boy, I had such a good time playing it. The competitive scenario was active as well. The gravity gun was responsive and even enabled some advanced moves like launching the combine energy ball and switching quickly to the gravity gun to grab it before it was released into an enemy and directing it to other target. Same with granades. Honestly, the laser mines was used just to troll people. The op weapons was 357 and crossbow. Two 357 shots or two arrows and almost any player was dead (depending on its HEV). There were entirely made maps just to snipe with 357. Such good times :( Every one knew how to bhop, too. And we taught each others. There were maps just to train bhops. I remember I made my first friends online while trying to learn bhoping after Midnight. Every half life content is this platform deserves a praise, and your video isn't an exception of it, but I'm sorry you didn't had the opportunity to play HL2DM on its peak.

I always felt like HL2DM was great because of the community servers with custom gamemodes/plugins. I spent most of my time on The Chapel/The Monastery/The Yaypit which was a build server with their own custom plugin. If you spent enough time on the server, you could apply to get access to special abilities like a select/translate/rotate/snap system for objects, a beam that could move any physics object (basically a more rigid GMod physgun), or even noclip. All of these special abilities enabled people to get really creative and build cool stuff. They also had a huge list of fun custom commands that anyone could use: like changing your player model to a tree, using a "jetpack", or my favorite the "grapple hook". I remember trying to scrap together a console command exec script which would spawn a beer bottle that exploded like an explosive barrel when it broke. When it finally worked, I was a very excited 13 year old. It's moments like that which I think inspired me to go on to write software professionally. Some people built really crazy stuff, while others just hung out and chatted. Good times on baron_mag2 with someone blasting "Champagne Supernova" by Oasis over voice chat using the program HLDJ. I always felt a really strong sense of community and made several good friends while I was there. At some point the HL2DM server shut down and they tried to move to TF2, but the server wasn't nearly as popular as it once had been. I believe they eventually moved back to HL2DM until finally deciding to shut down all servers.

Its funny because Half-life 2 still has better physics than a large majority of games that come out today, it would be interesting to see what a competitive shooter based around the gravity gun would be like. I like the idea of using objects to block gun fire and risk vs reward when holding an object that's big but slows you down and is easy to dodge. Hopefully it wouldn't be like fortnite but you can maybe move things to bunker down. Have default G gun spawns and you have to get weapons on the map like old Halo 3 multiplayer.

I'm talking about players bunny hopping at 200 km/h, pulling off crazy crossbow trick shots from halfway across the map, and even learning specific spots to bounce the bolt off walls to get kills. The movement mechanics were like nothing else I've ever seen, combined with some seriously precise aiming, and everyone was legit. It was unreal, and I miss it so much. Imagine what HL2DM would have been if valve had interest in it 😩 especially today, with all the skins, outfits, lootboxes etc.
@j4ff4c3ks1 Жыл бұрын
My fondest memory of HL2DM were those puzzle maps where the entire server with 40-some players was trying to solve a series of rooms like airboat obstacle courses and other stuff to collect a bunch of batteries and win the map

I still play a lot hl2dm with my friends when we get toguether to play in lan (since 2007 give or take), it just does not feel the same in gmod and I still make maps or remakes of dm maps. I would love the game to be fix good enough and have workshop support added for maps. It would be great if the community created a proyect to get it all fix up and then demanded the changes to be added to the game, kinda like HL2 Update but added to the base game.

hl2dm was my introduction to source multiplayer and i spent a good portion of my high school years playing it nonstop. there were promos back in 07-09 that gave you the game for free if you had an amd or nvidia gpu and that definitely played a part in building its playerbase back then. i was mostly into surf and killbox maps but even vanilla dm was so satisfying before the OB engine update. being able to sprint on top of your movement speed not being limited by whatever weapon you're currently holding made it the perfect playground for bhopping and advanced movement. the gravity gun's main utility in this game was not epic xD toilet kills, but for catching grenades midair to cook to perfection and throw at enemies. watch a pro player pull off an crossbow ricochet shot or curve a rocket around map geometry to wipe out an entire group of people and you'll get a sense of the depth players were able to bring to the game that valve probably never even intended. in addition to completely trashing the movement and netcode, the OB engine update also broke pretty much every bespoke server plugin simultaneously and a lot of them were never updated to work with the new engine. They also made shotgun pellet damage RNG for no conceivable reason, taking one of the best weapons in the game and making it near useless. There was a mod that ported hl2dm to the new engine while fixing all of these issues, but it sadly never really took off and the changes were never implemented by valve. Take a look at the HL2DM:OB steam group to get an idea of the community attitude towards the update at the time. Within less than a year after the update, most clans had either shut down or became inactive and stopped paying for server hosting. the community was definitely the strongest aspect of the game. the competitive scene was full of characters and overall the vibe of the game was more friendly and less toxic than something like CS. i befriended a bunch of mappers, server regulars, and randos and still talk to many of them to this day. overall good game 1/10

I agree. The OB Engine update also broke a lot of the good old Zombie Mod and especially Death Run servers. ZM doesn't felt similar to before, DR never came really back. Weren't my main game modes, but still sad to have them gone back then. Also in HL2DM loved to play mainly only puzzle mod, those weren't effected that much. But people moved on to other games anyways after 2010

Yeah, I remember being so massively disappointed in the OB overhaul when they patched hl2dm. I had been actively competing in the STA league in the WRW clan around 04-07 and basically everybody just quit overnight. Servers never recovered, player base quickly devolved into mostly stupid custom game modes because the netcode was so bad there was no point in competitive play. I still played a lot for another 2 or 3 years after that because I was only in high school. I miss the golden days of hl2dm though, by far my favorite online experience ever. I also spent SO many hours on the Rat maps and 2fort ports. Eventually I joined the KBH clan and became the most lethal Killbox player ever.

Coincidentally, I played HL2 deathmatch yesterday. It was a lot of fun. The first server I joined (which was also the one that was the most populated) was running vanilla deathmatch. The only real problem I had with the gameplay is that picking things up with the gravity gun and walking around with them never works smoothly, but killing people by throwing shit at them will always be funny so the jankiness didn't bother me that much.

HL2:DM was my companion to CS:S since 2006 until 2013, i spent there hundreds of hours playing low gravity maps, revolver servers, crossbow servers, gravgun only servers, joined competitive teams, roleplay and anything in between, we even had a group of +15 people who used to go alltogether to a local Cybercafé and play HL2:DM for countless hours since many of them didn't had a computer or internet connection at home, i can safely say it's been one of the games i had most fun in my life even after the Orangebox patch, it was simple, didn't had many things, but those were simpler times and we used to have fun with much less than now.

Even if it's Valve's worst product, I still enjoy it from early childhood into my mid 20s playing the co-op mode that still exists. Used to have huge clans back then running the maps in groups of 5-10 together, was a good time being young. Still nice to boot it up & play it though.

At first I thought this video would be discussing why the game "died" from a supporting perspective, but then it was against it. I can't believe you can talk that bad about the game, given it's a mod with HL2 vibe after all (and you like HL2, right?). Then, there are two main factors why it's semi-dead: the lack of players and annoying bugs, among which, the most active serious ones having emerged since 2013 updates. Bugs such as broken player model changes (which will also cause player to die if on team Rebels) and the weapon sequences console spam (which wasn't in the past) are noteworthy. Considering these factors, and the generational changes, I can understand new players may get a boring experience of the game. Also, I clearly see the notorious gameplay experience downgrade problem that high latency creates, and how it can retract players (just play on nearby / low ping servers). However, I have to point out a "sad true fact" that's hidden behind the game addiction: once you learn bunny hoping and thus flow faster and smoothly through the maps, you'll start to love the game. However, the key facts for it resulting boring aren't enough to judge that bad this great game. Still, the game can get easily fun if you find the proper server/s more of your liking and players/ambience. Some servers are very polished and well-maintained, result of hard effort by their owners. It's very wrong to opinion about the game without playing enough servers. Here is my server, by the way: steam://connect/adrianilloo.ddns.net:27017 I'm also aiming to create the most advanced HL2RP experience ever seen, from HL2MP base (I'm a modder).

@@nullcoreproject true, this game isn't bad just...sorta dead although I have this really annoying bug on my PC where the non-rebel human character models are horrifically corrupted so if anyone in a server is using those the game becomes basically unplayable for me, and this is *only* in HL2DM, not base HL2 or GMod but aside from that it's no more buggy than any other Source game lol

@@jaycie586 Eh, I personally think Deathmatch Source might be better than GoldSrc Half-Life Deathmatch since to say the least, GoldSrc is kinda shit at multiplayer at least from my experience. Everything feels clunky and unresponsive while on Deathmatch Source everything feels fluid and fun to control. What is weird that the 2 GoldSrc games that don't have this issue for me are Counter-Strike: Condition Zero Deleted Scenes and Deathmatch Classic.

TF2 cannot replace the experience of HL2:DM "kill box" maps with low gravity. You have to be careful how you jump because after you do, you can't change your mid-air trajectory. Also "sniping" with props becomes possible and is immensely satisfying.

I used to love these neat co-op maps I discovered around 2005-6 which I think was before Synergy. One in particular is that you had to make it through a haunted mansion with "ghost" enemies in order to find a treasure chest and haul it to a helicopter outside the front door. Another was a helicopter-based one where you had to complete a series of levels to make it up a shaft via a transport helicopter made up of brushes that one player would pilot, but the best part was that entering the helicopter actually took you to a separate section of the map to represent the interior without Havok throwing a hissyfit and killing the passengers, they even used a render target camera for the exterior. I admit, when I got my own Steam account around 2008 and wanted to play GMod again, I bought HL2DM (since GMod back then needed a Source game to play)
