CSGO originally looked tactical, gritty, dark and serious. The shaders had more contrast and better reflections which is part of the reason why the weapons for example look completely different despite using the exact same models and textures that they're in use now. That's the direction Hidden Path entertainment who were the main devs of CSGO before its launch envisioned. However Valve saw the game didn't pick up much steam on its launch and was mixly received they decided to take over and completely turn the style on its head since the Arms deal update. Nowadays GO looks more appealing to a broader audience. Clean, vibrant, colorful and plastic-y. And skins were the main reason to most if not all the changes that happened to the style of the game
@maxtenu2 жыл бұрын
The problem with giving a game gritty, realistic graphics is that the aesthetic depends almost entirely on the technology available at development. As much as 2012-era CS:GO has charm and a consistency that is seriously lacking in the game's new direction, it has undeniably shown its age. It seems like the options for modernizing these aging maps were to either keep up the realistic aesthetic and update these maps constantly through the years, or try to implement a new "timeless" art style. Given the limitations of the source engine and the long-term appeal of Team Fortress 2's art style, I'm not surprised Valve went with the latter. I don't think the new art style was a bad idea initially either. Plenty of the new skins and community maps have taken the "action figure" style way overboard, but if you take the updated base player models and place them on the updated core maps, the art style actually works well - I'd even argue that new Leet Krew models (7:52) look perfectly fine on their respective maps. I think the new art style's issue is one of **consistency**. The more stylized painted/sculpted look they were going for only works when the aesthetic is maintained across the board - when you throw in flashy neon skins and bulky, confusing operators, even the base-models that previously worked well just come across as more color. It's a shame that the cosmetics derailing the new style are also the ones bringing in most of the game's money.

AFAIK, sounds were changed not to make each weapon more distinct from the others, but rather because of some technical reason, and the fact that the devs wanted higher quality sounds. We had no problem telling each weapon apart from others before all of them changed in a few updates; it's just a matter of getting used to it. In fact, when the update hit, a lot of people complained that they couldn't tell the guns apart anymore because of the updated sounds. Obviously, those complaints didn't age well.

I believe 2019 is when csgo’s style peaked. Specifically with the release of the swat model remakes. It was initially kinda jarring to see CSGO make such a drastic change in style, but I’m honestly ok with it looking more vibrant and cartoony. I do think the agent skins pushed it WAY too far. It’s comparable to tf2’s cosmetics over time; some of them are comical but not unrealistic (like condom man), but a lot of them are just straight up stupid, and I think have no place in a game like CSGO. What is crazy is the Arctic Avengers had models made for Subzero by FMPONE, which was featured in CS:GO for a short time before Agents were ever added, but these models were never used in the version that was playable in the base build of CS:GO. Also: there was a project called LegacyStrike that basically brought back 2015 CS:GO /w usable skins that connected to your inventory. It was a great experience, but due to some interanl conflict it didn't stick around for long in the final version which was by far the most feature complete. They are still working on it, but it has been rebranded to CS:OG. I think they plan to make it more feature complete & there is a closed beta right now, hope it comes out in 2023 along with Classic Offensive.

Ratlobber just unlocked some childhood memories with that out of nowhere SSX Tricky reference.
@KNDCHV2 жыл бұрын
Yes it did. Since the pro scene blew up around 2015 everything went in favor of the game being more competitive-oriented. The maps got cleaner, more colorful to make the models stick out so visibility won't be a problem. The skins got childish with saturated colors, because nobody wants to see s1mple make a clutch with an AWP|Safari Mesh or AK-47|Black Laminate. It's not as exciting as him rocking a rainbow coated butterfly knife or AWP ripped straight from an anime. The map rotations are not made for the community to enjoy variety but more for them to test maps if they have any competitive viability. The fact that only Cache and Anubis made it into competitive map pool for 10 years speaks how much Valve cares about map creators and the community as a whole. All adjustments, buffs and nerfs to the weapons are made in order to "balance" the pro-scene and competitive and this was so obvious when they nerfed the Krieg and the AUG. Pros found out they are actually better than the AK/M4 meta and instantly nerfed them instead of adjusting them to a way that it won't break competitive play, but it won't also displease the community. Isn't it funny how the community of CS as a whole kept alive the game for 20+years with all of these mods and ways of playing the game and now the community is being so brainwashed that CS is a competitive game that you don't have any community made content. Does someone remember Jailbreak, Deathrun, Soccerjam, Basketjam, Zombies and many other mods? Some of us older folks remember them, but tell that to the new players who were born in the early 2000s. The only mods that are barely living are KZ, bkz and surfing, because no one cares if you can jump 290 LJ anymore or if you can do spinning tricks behind the goal and you score from the air in Soccerjam. The only thing people care about are how many skins you have and how many 1v5 clutches you can do in a game. I stopped playing CS:GO competitively 2 years ago. After 7000 hours It just tired me to death with the constant competitive grind. I want to relax, not to get yelled by a Russian guy or Swedish no-lifer that I didn't play something "according to the game". I love CS, but I grew up hating CS:GO in time, because it lost its sould somewhere in between the updates.

OG CS had a more experimental feel since many official maps used HL1's assets, even maps that used completely custom assets (textures, sounds, prefabs, etc) still had a clear goldsrc identity. CSS does this to a lesser extent, some maps can look a lot like HL2 with Port being the most prominent example but they still follow a fixed look and feel that reinforces the novelty of the Source engine. I think CSGO suffered greatly from not being derivative of a new engine like the previous entries, that may explain why the game steered too much from its original style.

These visual changes used to stay true to realism while also being updated to look more clean and colorful. Now there are additions and changes that look more colorful, and that's it. Back when Nuke was remade, Jess Cliffe posted on reddit saying that Valve had the help of people who worked on nuclear power plants (I don't remember the type of people he said exactly, this was almost 7 years ago) to help make the map's aesthetics more realistic, so it's arguably more like a real place than the original one. Dust2's rework also looks like a far more believable location than the old one, being based around real locations in Morocco instead of looking like a stereotypical war zone in Iraq molded into Dust2's layout. Recently though, mainly with the agent models, there's too many instances where something will not keep things realistic. The reworked Phoenix, SAS, and FBI models managed to look more clean and colorful while remaining true to how they would look in real life. For crying out loud, what's with that mad scientist, or the CT models covered in scuba gear!? Maps are also less likely to come with descriptions of what led to such situations in the first place. Maybe I'm just being picky, but I feel like I need a good explanation why Ts are so determined to put their lives on the line against military forces so that they can blow up a music studio

I'm guessing after awhile, Valve repurposed it to be a full fledged official new CSGO game and began updating all the assets so they aren't just copy & pastes from L4D2 and CSS. idk, as a person who has more nostalgia over 1.6 rather than source, i actually sort of like the art direction current cs:go is heading towards. it’s brighter, cleaner, more comical in a sense, all traits that 1.6 has in both map-wise and playermodel-wise. i disliked source’s visibility with all of it’s dull colors and fog submerging most of the maps, which i guess makes me prefer the new direction

Panorama replaced Scaleform because Scaleform was not Valve's, it was difficult to develop new features for and also it was just really bad. Panorama is also a Source 2 component and runs faster (more FPS).

Good vid. I used to play CSGO from 2013 to early 2017 which isn't that long but I slowly lost interest until I stopped almost completely. Occasionally I would hop back on about a year or so later only see that they added glove skins leading me to uninstall the game completely. I thought it was mostly the newer gameplay changes that threw me off but I never thought about how the newer stuff just doesn't sit right with me, it stopped feeling like CSGO and feeling like a weird modern version of Combat Arms

They way I see it is early CS:GO was following the Gritty, darker trend of the time of it's release and as the game became popular it's style was "corrected" to follow the more colour. bright trend that followed in later years. I'm on the fence of which one is better. I think the current version of CS:GO has a more unique identity compared to older CS:GO (which I feel was too similar to CSS) but it does feel too plasticly and clean.

The first release of csgo was nice but for people that play the game daily the change had to happen to bring people in and enjoy the possibilities, you would have had to buy csgo when it first came out and then dropped for 10 years to see that it's a completely new game. I've played this game for 10 years straight and have seen csgo blossom and grow up. I'm honestly super happy with the devs deciding to be risky and try new things because that is the only way this game will keep being fun. Shout out to the north american hostage casual community!! Awesome video! I had similar thoughts when checking out old builds of CSGO. Although one interesting thing you mentioned is how they could've used Agents skins to revive old TR factions. They actually did this with the Guerrilla Warfare faction! One of the new agents is Crasswater, based on the Guerilla model used in 1.6 and Source but burnt in some parts of his skin. There is even a shirtless version of him, very epic based and red-pilled, right?

The tactical, "gritty" look was kinda what made me fall in love with it in the first place and I absolutely DESPISE when the usually really old and loved titles; like CS:GO, get this... overly saturated, almost "fortnite-ified" look. It's happening with practically everything these days, and in my opinion it really destroys the feeling of "experiencing the situation" in context with the backstory behind the maps or the game itself. I think probably the worst ever example of this is Rainbow Six: Siege. Probably the game that had the biggest potential for TRUE 5v5 tactical shooter, and then they just turned it into a slower Overwatch.

i remember a steam review from a few years ago (even back then a lot of people thought the game has gone to shit). it was so accurate i saved it in a text file and here it is: Counter-Strike is a competitive team-based first person shooter that originally started out as a mod for the game Half-Life. There are two team types: Terrorists and Counter-Terrorists, the objective of the Terrorists is to plant the C4 explosives at either A or B bombsite, and the objective of the Counter-Terrorists is to defuse the C4 explosives or eliminate all Terrorists before the C4 is set. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive is the latest version of Counter-Strike and is very popular. Many tournaments are held for Counter-Strike and top teams/professional players play for money similarly in other popular games. In the early days of Counter-Strike: Global Offensive player movement was quick and tight with many skill-based tricks which could be performed in order to gain an advantage over the opponent whilst having more fun, of course. In some of the latest updates to Counter-Strike, most individual skill-based things that a player could perform have been removed from the game in what seems to be an attempt to make the game more team-based. These changes are based on professional player feedback, professional player feedback was an idea the development team had to get the thoughts/opinions from some of the best players who play Counter-Strike. It would seem not all of the updates that the development team rolled out were good for the game because of professional player feedback; opinions on certain aspects of the game were most definitely bias towards the professional players rather than opinions from experienced casual players. (This does not include people who complain about the state of the game on Reddit. If you see a post on /r/GlobalOffensive complaining about the current state of the game there is a high chance that person does not have a clue what they are talking about. I would go as far as to say that most people on that subreddit do not even own the game, let alone a matchmaking rank.) Professional players know how to play the game, they do not know how to make a good game, this is something the development team perhaps did not think about. Many of the fun aspects of the game were lost due to updates pushed by professional player feedback in what seems to be, again, an attempt to make the game more team-based. Counter-Strike: Global Offensive as it stands today is no more team-based than what it was before these skill-based and fun aspects of the game were removed. What fun aspects? Just recently an update was pushed in order to reduce player movement speed while a player was scoped-in with the AWP sniper rifle. This update was totally unnecessary, it was not "overpowered" as one would say, but simply because one professional player has a problem with it then everyone must have a problem with it in the development team's eyes. The normal movement speed while scoped-in offered a playstyle of working with the AWP up-close to enemy players, a close-quartered sniper battle. The idea of watering down the game while simultaneously lowering the game's skill ceiling to suit one person's opinion or a lot of inexperienced players' opinions is ludicrous. If the development team made the decision to remove this based on the reason for it not being realistic enough, then why not have everyone die from one bullet to the head with or without armour? Or why not have everyone who takes a fall in game walk slower due to one of their legs being broken? (No doubt this will happen, thanks Reddit.) Most people now will play Counter-Strike: Global Offensive because everyone else seems to be playing it; a cycle of people playing something that they don't actually want to, but because everyone else appears to be it's the only thing they can play, people do not really enjoy it as much as they would like to. There is no competitive scene in Counter-Strike 1.6 or Counter-Strike: Source and there are limited servers to play on unfortunately which is perhaps due to the fact that most of the server owners have packed up and moved to Global Offensive because it is "new". It has been a quick transition over to Global Offensive with the introduction to skins, everyone seems to be playing it to gamble and I doubt it will change sadly. If you are thinking of recommending a friend to play Counter-Strike, just make sure it is not this version of Counter-Strike. An unwatered-down version of Counter-Strike such as Counter-Strike 1.6 or Counter-Strike: Source would be the more appropriate choice.

I never felt like CS:GO’s stylization was it’s own thing, and unique like the other CS games were, even in the past. Since CS:GO has always been treated like a modern game, since the very beginning I feel it’s style is just more of a reflection of whatever is popular at the time, which why I think it makes sense it went from gritty more serious and realistic to a lot more cartoony and modern. Simply because overall, that gritty serious stuff was popular at the time, and now all this, bubbly and simplified stuff is a lot more popular and the norm now in video games, and in media in general.

People get caught up in nostalgia. The Maps in 2012 looked dated and drab even by 2012 standards because they were pretty much just ports from CS:Source that came out in 2004. The new modern maps are a huge improvement IMO.

ngl don't agree with most of this video Comes across as most of the points being "new csgo isnt exact copy of Cs:source = bad" despite many of the changes being both technical, and visual improvements It's refined its style away from generic 'gritty' low-saturation shooter art style it was chasing on the tail end of the popularity of it in the early 2010s, into more readable, and better controlled use of saturation. It knew its place was as a competitive shooter when the comp scene exploded, and tailored itself to that, doing its best to optimise performance, and clarity thus reducing a lot of visual noise, the maps and player models doing so too. CS:GO is still unmistakeable from a screenshot, and had it not changed with the times, it wouldnt have been nearly as polished or played as it is today. Lots of looking at the past with rose tinted glasses and not much else. For context, I played CSS from 2008 onwards, never really played 1.6, and played CSGO since the closed beta Oh, and not to mention - this same argument of 'lost its way'could be made for cs:s to 1.6, and even 1.6 to its earlier versions - things change, even if at the core, theyre the same

Map and Style are what it is because of a few things: 1.) Competitive. Imagine checking twice just to confirm that shadow is a human or not in a 14:15 clutch. No one want to lose like that. 2.) Hardware. CS series (and most other Source/GoldSrc games) used to be in that art style as a result of the hardware limitation at the time of their development. Box-like room with few model and lighting are ways to reduce the load for the computer, and people just get used to it. I would say it is still in the DNA of the engine. Not to mention that the monitor back then are just different from the one we are using now. Developer now enjoy a greater choice of art style and color tone, hence the greater variety of design. 3.) Management. Seperating causal and competitve into two map simply doesn't work, both from a developer point of view and from a viewer/player point of view. For developers, it is just extra work for something that at best not everyone cares about, at worst split the game in half like they did for 1.6 and CSS. For viewers/players, readability of a game is key to the entertainment for most of the not so hardcore fans. Imagine you watch a pro match and find some new lineup/tricks, only to find out you can only do that in one of the version, of the same map. Skins and Player Models: If you are hardcore CS fans, you will still play it no matter it exist or not; If you are causal player, cool looking skins for weapon are nice touch to the game; If you are a kid using your mum's credit card, skins are a way for you to gamble; And they make money out of it without breaking the game too much, so a big "why not" for the developer. (Might not be the case for agent model, that invisable green object is just nonsense) I do want to add that political correctness is one of the contributing factor in why the newer player model are less "cool" and I understand why they choose to do it this way. And it also affected other design choices but I am not gonna go deep into that. Sound: I personally liked the change of the weapon sound, because I actually damaged my hearing (temporarily, recoverable) back in the days when I was having prolonged session of playing (I used to not only play competive mode but also other custom game mode in community servers, back then CSGO was one of the few games I had). As a person sensitive to sound, I find it more comfortable to listen to. After all, not everyone is willing to lose their hearing to a god damn game. UI: More of a personal perference, personally liked the new one. The old one is trying to put too much into the same page. I would say CS (and by extand HL) series has this kind of art style because of the time they are being developed in. A lot of design choice echo the limitation of technology and trend at the time, and those are things that will change along the way. Changes are inevitable for series with a long history. CS are one of the few lucky ones, as you can always download an older version in steam. Or one step further, go build a custom mod for yourself. Just look at other live service game that you cannot even play an older version or modify without risking a ban or legal action from the publisher, or impossible to do it in the first place. (Edit: I do agree that CSGO lost its original style, but I don't think that's a bad thing)
