In a lot of ways, I still think half-life 2, the 2004 release, is more realistic than a lot of games released even today. Every game since then has had like a CGI glossiness to it that the original half-life 2 did not have. To be fair, As resolutions have improved, the textures in hl2 look a bit dated, and the geometry is really bare bones in some areas. But it nailed an atmosphere that no other game has ever really come close to. Games today look gorgeous, but none of them really get close to the sort of realism half-life 2 had going for it. I'm super excited to try this mod, as it clearly is a passion project and looks to be bringing that feeling into the modern age.

I remember being a kid riding +-5kms on my bicycle just to play a Half-Life 1 demo on my friend's windows 2000 pc, we'd play that game for hours, well into the afternoon taking turns and it's one of my fondest memories ever. My family couldn't really afford a PC that could run in at the time. Now I'm 31 years old and lucky enough to own a 4070 S rig, I have Black Mesa on Steam already installed and I been waiting for this RTX Remix to come by and I couldn't be more excited. Give them a tiny budget and a tight deadline. -Before the release, extort the modders to take down their own enchantment mods. -Pull the old versions off of stores. -Release the games in a broken state (they managed to downgrade the graphics of a 20 year old game) -Charge 60$ anyway -Cancel every other remaster you were planning because that one "didnt sell well for some reason" -Blame the outsourced company and fire them. -Release a half-assed patch 3 years later in an attempt to get the game to the cutting edge standard of a playstation 2. -Still looks worse than the originals

You can still play the original HL2 on Steam, no preservation problems here. But if you meant "make the game hold-up to modern standards" then yes, Valve outsourcing this task to the community is a shrewd move.

@fireaza Yes, however it being on Steam doesn't do jack for preservation because if Steam shuts down (unlikely I know) then any Steam becomes inoperable without cracking Steam's verification system. Now if it was on GoG that's a different story because you can download offline installers for everything so if GoG goes down you can still install and play everything.

I bought the big box pc version from Game station in the UK and it never booted up, took it back for another copy and I found out everytime I installed it a file would randomly move from one folder to another 🤣 took me all day and I wanted to just play the game. Finally got it in the right folder and boom the valve logo came up and I never looked back. The og games got a remaster too, definitely check it out.

The environments look good, but those muzzle flashes look over-animated to me. They look too slow, and the explosions too. In original HL2, the explosions came and went within a few frames. They snapped and it was visceral. Just my first impression, idk.

I played it at 6-8 fps on low settings at 480p, played on medium at 720p, played on ultra at 1080p, played on ultra with mods, played in vr, and now I'll play with rtx technologies. Great work so far, especially the textures. My only complaints are that the game thus far presented looks phenomenal in stills but in motion the lighting, animations and particles look off or ‘overanimated’; might be due to the limitation on how the rays are rendered which are slower but it’s lacking the viceral and instant feedback from things such as explosions and muzzle flashes. (also please remove that goofy magnum smoke ring)

There are so many great games that could benefit from an RTX facelift. Take BF1942 as an example despite thousands of requests from fans - Dice and EA won't remaster it - because it allowed players the freedom to run their own dedicated servers and play with AI. I trust that the RTX project will not change the lighting and atmosphere in any way, except to make lights and shadows dynamic. Unless dynamically illuminated by flashlight, gunfire, etc., areas of darkness must stay dark; pitch-black areas must remain pitch-black. As an aside, I can not express the level of immersion that is possible when playing atmospheric games on an OLED-based High FoV Gaming setup. If you are always trying to maximize immersion, ask me about High FoV Gaming.

I remember when I was around 12 or 13, and I finally got my own pc. I had been playing roblox and almost nothing else for years until then. I decided to try this "half life 2" game. As soon as I started the game I was stunned. I was so amazed at the story telling and the scripted events happening. I remember just how much awe I was in that first scene with barney and kleiner. I had never seen anything like it before. And this was in 2019-ish, and it was still so impressive to me.

As someone who has never played Half-Life 2, I will probably check this out. A key issue I had with the original is that I just can't stand old retro graphics. Very cool to see that just by remaking the game with modern physics and graphics it can look so much better.

We need interviews with people like they did in the movie, Interstellar, where they are talking about all the hard times, but do it for Half Life 3. "People kept telling us it was going to come out...and we believed them. After a while, we just had to move on...not everyone did though, some took it really hard." :)
