Half-Life 2's Ravenholm is peak Valve level design

Despite the strong tonal shift to being full-blown survival horror, Ravenholm still feels like a Half-Life 2 level. How did they manage that? Well it's all due to the Valve way of designing levels.

While playing TF2 on custom maps, often orange maps, you can tell how influential the official map design is. Good maps, even without textures, can show clear pathways to the objective while maintaing a fairly open environment for firefights. Bad maps lead to getting lost, confusion, disorientation, and surprise upon encountering an enemy.

another thing that I absolutely love on HL2 is the perception of a journey that it has. the events of the game are linear, so you spend the whole day running from the combine, and arrive at night in ravenholm. this kind of linearity is not something games have very often

I just love everything about the narrative and design of half-life 2, especially when it comes to city 17. That blend of futuristic alien technology with the decaying Eastern Europe architecture perfectly conveys the sheer horror of the place, the combination of a big brother like entity that silences all opposition and brutally suppresses the population with the existential boredom of living with all sexuality completely repressed, eating food composed of rehydrated processed blocks, drinking water that makes you forget and having nothing to do but sit around whilst your species dies out... it captures the horror of a life without purpose or joy. Also the fact that the combine, who are basically only on earth to strip all its resources, leave the infrastructure of the old cities behind and only add what is necessary to maintain their control is great characterisation of them, it just reinforces the idea that they’re the empire equivalent of carrion eaters

I actually have been avoiding trying to finish HL2. I stopped playing it a little after the escape from Nova Prospekt several years ago, and I feel like I really should play through the whole game again at this point because it's been so long. However, I've been putting it off, through a combination over wanting to wait for that HL1 fanmod remaster so I can catch all those juicy lore bits in HL2, and fear over having to go through Ravenholm. Again. I think, however, with everyone reminding me about how goddamn good HL2 was I might just brave Ravenholm again just to see this wonderful game to the end. Thank you, Jenna.

grg sure, hacks and exploits were developed without the source code before but now that it’s out in the open it could open the floodgates. @Elendrial
@Elendrial 4 жыл бұрын
@@DarkPowerize lmao no. I get why people are making this assumption - "source code" sounds kinda secret and secure. When you open game files in notepad all you see is the garbled trash that is machine/byte code. But even if it doesn't look readable to us humans in notepad, machine code is still the same code someone wrote in w/e high level language - it's just been translated. It is true that information is lost in translation from a high level language to a low level language (using a compiler), but the functionality of the program _has_to_be_ exactly the same. As such we can retranslate machine code back to high level languages (using a decompiler). Often this means that work has to be done by hand, eg: renaming variables/functions/classes, which wouldn't be necessary with direct source code and isn't always trivial, but at the end of this you have a representation of that very same thing. Things may be shifted around/differently named/etc, but the code does exactly the same thing either way. You can test this out yourself! For C/C++ projects you can use Ghidra, for Java projects (like android apps) you can use Luyten, and tbh for any other language you can probably just google " decompiler". Ofc there is also the rumour that there's an RCE attack going around. I haven't seen any evidence to support its existence, but is really serious if it does exist. To the point where I'd personally recommend not even touching anything with multiplayer until you hear something directly from valve. This will have 0 relationship to the source leak.

Orange maps is specific to Source, it's usually referred to as whiteboxing or greyblocking or a combination of the terms for other engines, there's very little standardization of terms. Source just likes to be fun and use orange instead of grayscale for generic blocks :) Project Borealis (a fan game that will retell Epistle 3) is created in Unreal Engine, but they actually use orangeboxes despite normally being whiteboxes, as they try to emulate Source as much as possible

What a coincidence that I'm playing HL2 for the first time and went through this level yesterday. Valve are excellent at guiding players and supporting different playstyles, something I noticed during my countless hours in L4D2. Trying to get through Ravenholm with just the Gravity Gun was thrilling and felt extremely rewarding as you had to make the best use of the environment. (Ex. Saving fire barrels for multiple enemies, using the blades of the broken trap, and desperately keeping sawmill blade with you while waiting for the lift near the end and running circles around the zombies when I lost it.) I didn't realize the mine at the end still counted for the achievement and didn't get it, but I'm eager to return and test myself again.

They were working on an episode for a Half Life 2 expansion back in the day with the same name. They even show some pretty polished Alpha footage of the game. Very interesting as a whole, all very amazing work, but you can skip to Ravenholm's part if that's all that you're interested in and still enjoy it.

On my first playthrough I was mowing down the zombies it was a lot of fun, until I realized there's next to no ammo packs in the entire chapter, so I ran out of ammo in all of my weapons, meaning my only weapons to rely on are the crowbar and the gravity gun, this really made it scarier since I don't have any gun to defend myself with, but still fun since I could still scan around my surroundings for props to kill zombies with, not to mention the fact that there's like a million zombies spawning one after each other which really made this chapter stand out by limiting your arsenal, Introducing new stronger and scarrier zombie types (i like how they forshadowed fast zombies with their ragdolls all over the place and then put 2 random poison zombies instead) and tighting the space and design it so well that it fells so big, I just really love this chapter

Black Mesa developers call the idea of introducing wayfinders "sign posting". Sometimes it's literally a blinking EXIT sign with sparks falling unto an escape ladder, other times it's a bloom of blue glowing leafs opening up to give way to you. Just adding this in so you can appreciate how much Black Mesa is made in spirit of HL level design.

Polygon's been delivering top notch game journalism contents for years now. Not just those opinionated reviews of a game on the same point rank system that somehow can be used for all types of game under the sun. Great job guys!

I know these guidelines are intended for video games, but honestly? This is actually going to be really helpful in guiding me making future parts of my party's D&D campaign. A lot of it (like the linear path with optional side routes players are rewarded for exploring) I already do, but there are definitely some things I'll have to keep in mind!

I feel like Bethesda needs to take some notes on this because there have been so many times in all of their games that I’ve played where I’ve been wandering in a dungeon of some variety, whether it be tomb or abandoned building, where I’ve gotten to a point that I have wandered around the same area for 30 minutes because I can’t find the next door. Like I’ll look at the local map, and see, “ahh, I haven’t explored that area yet” so I’ll start walking, but then there’s no way to get there seemingly, so I’ll watch a video tutorial, and I can’t find the path that they take, so I just turn off collision and go to the quest marker directly then work my way back or continue on if it’s taken too long.

It's funny how Half-Life came out in 1998, Half-Life 2 came out in 2004, the Portal games just... This information has been around forever and yet Valve is still the only ones who bother to use their rule book despite the whole world seeing how effective it is. But it doesn't get you money right this very second so big publishers will never, ever actually follow the recipe.

Can't tell if Jenna is being lit in a greenish tone (weird choice for a pink background) or if the chroma key threshold was dialed a little too high. Either way, I sense the home office struggle is real. Really solid and informative video though.
