Something I think would be kinda interesting for a beta mod to do is implement the manhack arcade and have the ability to actually play it... Then later in the game during the canal and sewer sections, you actually come across one of the rebel hideouts you visited from the arcade. You slowly put the pieces together and realize you were killing actual people all along.

Alternatively there could be a part of a mod where a resistance cell manages to capture the arcade and turn the manhacks on the Combine. It could be out of a general show of defiance or maybe an effort to stop an ongoing raid of a resistance base through sabotage.

Raising the Bar Redux is great. No playable manhack arcade though (but you go through the place). Although it's not 100% pure beta recreation, more like "Black Mesa but for HL2 Beta". Dark Interval is also high up there, but so far it's very short - barely 2 hours. But you get to play manhack arcade.

14:27 another idea for a game "Manner scanner" You are a cartoon like city scanner and you have to fly around and find people who do things that oppose the combine. If you find such people you have to take a video of them doing said action and you get points to upgrade and what not. Bonus points for finding rebel hideouts!

Mixing my love for arcades with a dystopian conqueror force using videoames as an unwilling military recruitment of sorts. Combine are wicked and evil pricks but damn if they aren't creative. The issue I see with an arcade like this is that it introduces a number of in universe logic problems. Are there so many resistance members that the combine can literally resort to them being used as targets in a virtual reality game? It would be so boring to play if you just patrolled a sewer for 15 minutes and only encountered 3 zombies and a barnacle at most. So either the resistance is so numerous that they can be constantly used as targets in a game or the game is incredibly boring. Plus, you know how gamers are. They will absolutely attempt to cause as much havoc as possible. It's just a game, after all. I can totally steer my manhack into the Combine Police or the camera drones and just restart... No, I think the arcade is a cool concept for the vile nature of the Combine but it just doesn't work for me.

Beta restoration mods make this work better than how it is depicted in the video. Essentially, making it more of an abstract retro game experience where it's quite clear that players are interacting with both a game AND interacting with the real world thereby blurring reality.

The combine are creative in their ways of control. I feel like the arcade should've been internally like the first concept to really play into the idea that it's simply an arcade - make it easier to manipulate the citizens. Externally (and behind the scenes) it could still retain the very combine-esque look. Like how places decorate the areas everyone's meant to see and not the staff-only areas.

RE: 16:07 the building is modeled after the National Palace of Culture, Sofia (Bulgaria). The art director (Viktor Antonov) is Bulgarian which is where he drew inspiration for most of City 17's architecture. The star is probably a callback to the Soviet era. In a couple of points during HL2, City 17 has Bulgarian writing and that set the stage for these games to take place in a pseudo-real Slavic nation, moving Eastward with subsequent installments (Episode 2, Alyx). Location was never clear but this is the origin for the vague Slavic/Eastern European aesthetics.

I don't know what Valve thought overall, but I think a lot of the stuff that was cut made the combine a bit cartoonishly evil, like polluting the air and saying "A good citizen saves oxygen" or whatever, and yes, the manhack arcade. The final version is a lot more realistically oppressive, gray and soulcrushing

The Manhack arcade was probably removed because it doesn't make sense. - It would be very obvious in the game and outside of it that people are controlling real drones - It wouldn't make sense for people to be playing it during the revolution - Seeing Gordon Freeman constantly win in the game would be a total immersion ruiner, especially if you've heard of him (he could have his appearance replaced though, doesn't make him less OP) - It's like Microsoft flight simulator, at least a few people would bring a manhack to their communal house or arcade and they or their roommates would see it.

if i was a lead developer for half-life 3 i would just make that freeman messed with time and space causing a fatal paradox that gman employed to fix it but its too much of a nudge to fix while freeman goes trough the world of half-life 2 beta to the point manhack arcade is real and the more you play it the more difficult the manhack gets literally upgrading it yourself by playing more and more once you continue the chapter but eventually gman does what it was tasked and halfl-life 3 reality universe reshuffles and the paradox is corrected at the end once gordom freeman disturbs the portal where the consul tries to escape and at that part gman just congratulates freeman for making their job finish and ask gordon to forget all about what happened sure the ending sounds disappointing but knowing half-life is dealing with dimensions that mess with time and space

The manhack arcade is an interesting idea but I'm kinda glad we didn't get it in a way. The way this was made seems a little bit on the nose, even for the combine. It's a cool idea having people unwittingly serving via arcades but having it be something that is so blatantly obvious seems a bit goofy, if it was like recreations of half life 1 lets say from a breen account: "Kill vortigaunts and military!" and the military could hypothetically just be militia. Hell you could have a "crush the castle" style game that's just firing artillery or something. I feel like having a game literally just playing a manhack is a bit too much.

Man, with drones becoming a bigger and bigger part of our modern warfare, I fear that such a "game" might one day become a reality. I would have loved to see the Manhack Arcade in the game, or even better in Half Life Alyx. But I think, from a business point of view, the HL2 beta is too grimdark. The game would probably have been rated R or at least mature. Unfortunately they had to tone it down for retail to sell more copies.

Fun fact: the city 17 uprising was not instigated by the Nova Prospect destruction. It was simply a result of the collective gamer rage felt by countless citizens, having each had their manhack killed by Gordon Freeman 50 times in a row.

Maybe this is a bit of a reach but the arcade idea feels a bit like what the rumored upcoming Half-Life game code name "Citadel" has been rumored to be, someone in a control station playing a top down strategy game (arcade?), and then there's players on the ground in a FPS perspective, maybe the person in the command center could play either a support role for a team on the ground, or set obstacles to stop them, the game apparently would involve all sorts of characters from Half-Life, including the combine.

Honestly, it feels a bit too unrealistic for the setting - I don't think too many citizens would want to play that sort of scenario, knowing what the manhacks are and how they're used, even if they believed it was entirely virtual. You've been conquered, rounded up into ghettos, stripped of possessions, freedom, and identity - under constant surveillance and threat of being brutally assaulted and dragged away to Nova Prospect at any moment, and your conquerors offer you a leisurely activity of "pretending" to hunt down your fellow prisoners and brutally execute them. Doesn't really make sense to me. If they were so broken and defeated as to be desensitized to such things, they would also very likely lack the drive to partake in such forms of "leisure". Now, if this was a thing Civil Protection did on their free time, that would make much more sense. Maybe people who excel and show enough enthusiasm are marked for potential combine "promotions".

I gotta be honest, this is the most efficient way to kill the rebellion off. Imagine a Speedrunner or a person who like grinding for loot on games, killing hundreds to ensure the benefits of their upgrades. And virtual skins (virtual as in the player thinks a customizable skin is on their manhack, because the combine obviously wouldn't allow people to customize a manhack)

It seems like making 2 different games and releasing the best one is a common theme for Half-Life. They did it with 1 and 2. I wonder if there was a beta version of Half-Life Alyx that no one knows about because it wasn't part of any hack.

The arcade was sort of an interesting idea, but it was so cliche that any player would see the _"if they die in the game, they die in real life"_ aspect from the beginning. Retail and Beta is probably the best case of addition by subtraction for game releases.

I feel like the Manhack-Arcade could have unintentionally introduced some interesting and disturbing meta-level considerations while playing HL2 itself; if you didn't know the Manhack-Arcade was real, how could you know that HL2 wasn't real, and if you were just piloting Gordon to kill someone who didn't deserve it? At least, that's what I would have probably ended up thinking at some point, and there's already enough meta-commentary built into HL2 that I think the Manhack-Arcade, while cool from a story perspective, might have just muddled the waters a bit too much for me to enjoy the game as much; probably a good thing that it was "cut" in that regard.
@benthomason3307

Freeman's Mind demonstrated that manhacks would actually be rather pathetic in real life combat, as that series' Freeman was able to completely hold the ones in the sewers at bay just by standing on the other side of a chain link fence, and it's pointed out that they could be defeated with something as simple as a baseball bat. He actually speculates that they were designed to hunt and kill rats, not people. On top of that, the very concept of the manhack arcade sounds utterly absurd to me. Yes, it's very much _evil_ to trick your slaves into unwittingly slaughtering their own resistance, but it's more important to ask how _practical_ that would be, or more specifically if it would be more practical than just piloting the manhacks yourself. And I think it very much wouldn't, for the simple reason that a pilot who thinks he's playing a videogame wouldn't take his task as seriously as a loyal combine pilot working for you knowingly and willingly. He might be the sort of player who compulsively smashes every crate he comes across, for example, which furthermore would probably drive resistance fighters to wonder why the real manhacks killing them are behaving exactly like the virtual ones in the arcade... There's also the fact that said gamer would not be given any sort of training on how to actually do their job before being sent out into the field. Honestly dropping this concept was very much the right move on Valve's part if you ask me, even if it doesn't seem to necessarily have been for the right reasons going by the explanation you give in the video.

If I played Hackman, I would be disturbed by the screams and stop playing immediately. Even if it killed me. I would just come back, because I am a God-Tier.

What I find depressing is that Valve watered their game down for that "T for Teen" ESRB rating. We could have had a much better game if they kept developing on the air purifier scenario version that was leaved in 2003.

I would argue that sure there is a psychological manipulation element here, but the combine are specialists in biological manipulation first. A lot of these things would be neurological programming utilizing the same predatory practices of loot boxes/skinner boxes to connect the win with a release of positive hormones/neurotransmitters. This would also be amplified by the wait, sure it could be a thing for competitiveness but by forcing people to wait it makes the hit of the feel good chemicals much stronger.

I think I unwittingly made a Creepypasta about this as a kid. One where I play an FPS game that's a bit _too_ realistic.

I find the manhack Arcade pretty cool. But just like the Consul, it looks too cartoonish for me to really work. It's not like playing a game of beating the other, is more like a game about beating yourself. I dont think it makes a lot of sense. At least in my impression, humanity is for the most part a population that knows it is under occupation and oppression. They obey the combine because they had to. It's not like 1984 where the population direct his hate towards the enemies of state. For the humans in half life the enemy is the state and the colaborators. I don't think they would like to play a game about being a very characteristic weapon that they know that kills their own people every day. Is like making a game about using cars to run over people in terrorist attacks in the streets.

I can’t believe hl2 predicted the use of suicidal military drones used by infantry men Maybe it’s also right about the combine maybe they really do exist

Well we need to admit that it is brilliant. Slap some cartoonist shader to camera feed, connect it to drone in different city disconnect it every few minutes to simulate levels and done! You have inteligent cheap drone controller...

I’ve not played Half-Life 2 very much, so I could be wrong, but this feels a bit too… predictably dystopian for HL2. I’m glad it didn’t make it to retail. It fits better elsewhere.

Although the man-hack arcade is a cool part of the beta that fits into the grimdark aesthetic, I think it was a good thing it was cut, mostly because it doesn't make a huge amount of sense in-game. First of all, the way it is presented in the beta makes it pretty transparent that you are actually controlling real man-hacks. I think it would be a lot better disguised if it was a completely different game (I mean, right now it was literally called hack-man), where some sort of AI is used to replace the resistance members in the game with some cartoony enemy. The real benefit of having this system is that you are essentially outsourcing the man-hack AI to a human, and the only thing you need from the person are the game inputs. So you can completely change the graphics of the game, as long as the core gameplay is the same as controlling the man-hack. Also, is every man-hack directly controlled by a civilian? If not, it would be embarrassing if a CP deployed a man-hack only for it to not do anything since no one was playing its game. What if a resistance member entered the arcade, and started turning the man-hacks on the CPs that deployed them? So although I think it is a cool dystopian idea, just having man-hacks use AI like they do in the final game make a lot more sense.
