I think it's funny how in the old days japanese developers often didn't ship games to the west because they could be "too hard" for western audiences and then they get an arcade port of a great western game that explains every single mechanic as if japanese people had never seen a videogame before while the western version puts some trust in the players intelligence

It's not the same making a PC game for a dedicated audience and making an arcade game meant to be played by any random person who goes over to the arcade and wants to try out a bunch of stuff. But yeah, it's funny that they would make an arcade of Half Life 2 of all things.

This is actually pretty good for a arcade version of the game if I do say so myself... yes the story is a lot more condensed but it's a arcade game so that's not much of a surprise and also comparing it to the original Half Life 2 is pretty unfair IMHO because arcade games are usually more shorter/condensed compared to actual retail games for console's, PC's etc... I will say though that the tutorials really do hurt this game and there should be a way to turn them off as they constantly keep popping up on the screen telling you what to do even though most if not all the things it's telling you to do are common sense unless you have never played any FPS game before I guess... I also like how they added back cut content to this game like the Combine Assassin & The Sniper Rifle which for some reason or another were removed from the actual Half Life 2... I also find it funny that this is the only version of Half Life 2 that has an actual player model for Gordon Freeman as all the other versions use a weird grey placeholder model...

I can't believe someone actually developed this. Looks like Half-Life 2 for braindead. So many lessons, arrows where to go (in a single turning corridors where you can't even go wrong unless back). And most of all, skipped stages and story, it doesn't really make sense if you didn't play original HL2. You just run and shoot someone and it barely explains the story how and why you get there. Anyway, I'm very impressed with the programming work done :)

For those annoyed about the way the arcade game keeps showing arrows of where to go, labeling important things, etc. - I suspect it has less to do with the fact that Japanese people don't typically play these types of games, and more to do with the fact that arcade games in general are built around being super easy to learn and quick to pick up. They typically explain things that are treated as obvious in the console version (including if the console version is ported later). For example, the original _Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles_ arcade game would tell you to "push buttons, waggle joystick" when you're grabbed from behind, but the console version doesn't display this prompt. The arcade version also showed the word "ENERGY" over pizza (which refills health) but the console version also doesn't have this. The console version treated these as obvious. Anyway, since this is an arcade port of Half-Life 2, the prompts and indicators are added so players immediately jump into the action without risking any struggling with controls or where to go, since arcade games in general are built entirely around having a "pick up and play" nature.

Oh, new scenes in the background during gmans speech. That's nice. Super long tutorial, but i guess he didn't want to skip anything. These are usually done during the demo in arcade games... There are too many neon indicators, it reminds me of when the game would load bad textures on the pc. They should have been all one colour, a bit more inconspicuous and flashing gently to keep that arcade feel. Here they just look kinda bad. Hah, i do like the way the word defeat flashes onscreen! Very arcadey. I don't mind the cutscenes, this is an arcade adaption. Unique new view. No gman waiting on the balcony at the start of chapter 2. I swear you can drive the boat normally faster than this but....arcade momentum i suppose... Hmm perhaps some tutorials could have been skipped...that one to refill ammo from the box isn't needed. Heh the jumps on the boat look wimpy when taking them at such a normal speed. That gun you use to attack the helicopter is different I'm sure... Oh we skip the final battle with the helicopter altogether? No gravity gun for ravenholm lol. And new generic death sounds for zombies. Ah we skip quite a lot of ravenholm as well. Surely the rooftop survival would have worked well for the arcade? Haha i do like the introduction of a kind of mini boss segment at the end of ravenholm! LOL i think the warning was longer than the boss! Hmm i do like that outro with the camera pulling back from the antlions. Having to stay off the sand to not activate the antlions seems a good fit for an arcade adaption. Without the gravity gun, it seems easy to run out of ammo on the antlion guardian. The antbait seems less effective. I guess because it's arcade. Hmm i just noticed you don't seem able to collect ammo from dead bodies....

His description's cute. "Players control their movement using two joysticks (one for each hand) and floor pedals. It's...different. This was difficult to record with the controls etc" meanwhile all of these bugs that don't exist in the original release, plus the aiming is clearly from a mouse. Joysticks have a very distinct way to themselves. Look up the 2006 video of a person actually playing the arcade and recording it with a camera. Look closely, you can tell the aim isn't free and flowing like a mouse.
