Half Life Alyx: G-Man unused animations [S2FM Test]

While digging through HL:A files I've noticed there's a few unused animations and particle effects for the G-Man, and rendered this small test.

Alot of these were probably earlier in development, as it looks like he'd have been "sneaking around" some, as well the teleporting one near the end somewhat implies he was playing with his powers some, which could indicate earlier on they didn't plan the combine to be holding him where he was, maybe he was originally held more in a part of xen, which could have been a place he was "captured" into.

Makes sense since we saw way more xen in the concept art. Though I have a feeling some of it is more along the lines that it's a part of him separated from the rest that's been captured. He's looking around frantically for something and seems vulnerable in some parts. In the last part he seems like he's trying to do that separation thing he did in the ending of the game but couldn't. I think early in the game they wanted the combine to appear far stronger in the universe by being a threat even to the gman since it's clear that he's in distress in these scenes. However they decided against it and made the gman appear more in control of the situation at the ending. Making it look like everything was planned by the gman.

I imagine that this was also from an earlier stage of writing where G-Man was still actually captured, instead of obviously having planned for Alyx to reach him from the start. The part where he plays with his powers is the only one in which he has the composure you would expect of him.

I feel like the first one was meant for when you approach the Vault, because the silhouette of that animation looks very much like Gordon. I imagine it was meant to string the player along into thinking it was Gordon before destroying the field, but it didn't fit G-Man's character to do something like that.

Some of these were probably intended to be used for scenes where Gman would watch the player like he did in HL2, which was only really briefly done with a painting of him on a wall that’s somewhat hidden. I would’ve loved for him to stalk the player like he used to in earlier games.

I think the reason most of these animations are very "unlike" gman is because he was trying to fool Alyx, at the end of the game, into thinking he was Gordon stuck inside that room in the vault. In 0:06 you can see him looking around, investigating his surroundings, like Gordon would be in this situation. 0:34 is him pretending to be startled and getting off of a chair, probably when he realized Alyx was about to free him. At 0:50 he looks through the window in the room, then sits back down in said chair. Not sure what the other animations would be used for.

After thinking and looking at the last animation I have a guess It’s G-man regaining his powers, it seemed like the vault disabled them in the original since why would he be in there plus if the animations were G-man trying to trick alyx into letting him out there would be something stopping his powers so the effects could be them returning and his hand movements of said animation could be him reacting to them/toying with them/playing with them

It’s weird how in some of these gman looks confused and unsure for the first time, I think that the combine really found a way to beat him this time. Assuming that these are for when Alyx frees hims. This would make sense though because the vort energy combine use to trap him is his only weakness, so he could be scared of them.

I don’t know if he would be scared of them. In HL2 Episode 1 when the Vortigaunts use their powers to restrict him from influencing Gordon, he looks more annoyed than scared

I think that Half-Life Alyx takes place in another timeline where gman had more control over his power due to elements of Xen sneaking into the "Alyx universe", But the Combine where more advanced in this universe compared to the Half-Life 2's Combine, gman must have not been aware of the power of this universes Combine and he got captured as a result, It could be that gman wanted to send Gordon to this universe, But after seeing how the Combine captured him, He must have decided to tell his Half-Life 2 counterpart to send Gordon to the Half-Life 2 universe because the Combine are more weak in that universe, Half-Life 2 gman might have been planning to send Gordon to the Half-Life 2 Beta universe, But the Combine where too powerful for what gman planned to use Gordon for, So gman decided to send Gordon to the Half-Life Alyx universe, An version of gman from that timeline got captured, So that version told the other one about that universe and then Gordon got sent to Half-Life 2, The Half-Life 2 beta universe is the original timeline that Gordon was from, But gman took Gordon from Black-Mesa and decided to send him foward in time, But as I said before, gman had to send Gordon to another universe, The reason Half-Life Alyx gman wanted to send Gordon there must have been because of the Combine being less powerful compared to the original timeline, But gman got captured before he could finish his plans, So gman sent Gordon to Half-Life 2 because he had a version of himself who was not captured there, gman might have been planning to send Gordon to one of the universes where the combine where more weak because of it being easier to finish his plan of taking over the Combine, gman could have modified Half-Life 2's Combine portal and weapons to create an army while using the remains of the Xen creatures that he collected from the first Half-Life game, And used the creatures as soldiers, gman would have sent his new army to take over Half-Life Alyx's Combine, Afterwards gman would have used the advanced tech to create a machine to contain and destroy the original universes Combine and have full control over the entire multiverse.

The first one where he looks around confused makes me think it could have been something to do with when he was first captured. He looks like he is trying to figure out what is going on. The one where he peaks over/around something could have been when you first approach the vault, he could have originally peaked over a window ledge or something to see who was approaching, and to make it feel less likely to be Gman inside. The ones where he gets up super fast I have no clue, it seems very out of character for him. I am afraid to think of what could make him act so jumpy.

I think these were meant to be when you enter the vault. He’s in a state of confusion/distress because it’s the only time he’s ever been unable to control a situation. You were probably only meant to see these in silhouette.

I'm not sure what stream you refer to. And I'm not a particle specialist, I only rendered the animations / particles i found, raw. This was a simple test more than anything.

@@foxar9606 Many of the unused particles in HLA point to textures that do not exist in the game as they have been renamed. Thankfully, we are able to decompile these 1:1 and fix issues like that. So I found where this came from. Tyler McVicker had access to a version of the game from August 2019, and the ending of the game was extremely different, and featured the combine housing Gman in his cell, with controls limiting him from leaving the cell. I think the first animation would have played while in his containment since it’s a small area he moves and is looking around like he’s unsure, and since it held him there it might have cut his powers off leaving him shocked, but was cut to do the reveal better and keep the mystery around gman. Everything up to the teleport seem to be more humorous reveals that he’s there and not Gordon. I can see why they were all cut. The last one seems to be like an alt ending where Gman is disappointed and just leaves Alyx trapped in space time, like a bad ending

They're within Half Life Alyx's files. If you own the game and open any software that lets you view animations and models of the game, you should be able to find them in the G-man models.

I'm not sure what you mean. The animations were found on gman_particle.vmdl. Animation names are such as 'gman_waiting_loop' and 'gman_waiting_exit' (near the end where he teleports away) While indeed the peeking animations are only referred to as 'peekaboo', they are only found on gman_particle model, and not on any other model, so i find it difficult to imagine they are for the citizen ghosts, especially since the 'ghosts' are meant to be citizens almost frozen in time, The ghosts you refer to have designated citizen models (and few broken particle effects) that have no animations besides their idle 'frozen' animation.

This is a well known fact, and I confirmed with Tyler McVicker that I am right. So you are just being very misleading with this video
