A relatively spoiler-free video about Levitation, a large community-made mod for Half Life Alyx. Subscribe to it here: steamcommunity.com/sharedfile...
You need Half Life Alyx to be able to play it. And a VR set.
This video contains are clips of gameplay, but no real talk about the storyline or anything I'd deem to be a 'spoiler'.

No outro crap and other nonsense. You give us exactly what we came for and when you're done, without any warning, you just turn around and walk out the door. This man wins the internet.

I know this is something I, and many other "hardcore" VR gamers would love. But the reason Valve made it the way it is, is because the game can already feel overwhelming for more normal people so dramatically increasing the enemy counts would make that worse. Like 2kliksphilip mentioned, it only takes a small mistake, like forgetting to reload for you to get overwhelmed and panic in combat I can personally recommend H3VR if you want more realistic and fast paced combat with intricate weapons. Not that the enemies in that game are realistic, for they are sausages

It's definitely one of the best but it does suffer from the L/R eye blend, this could potentially be solved by using the OpenVR input plugin for OBS that lets you capture raw footage from one eye with full FOV and quality, not sure if 2kliksphilip has given that a try.

3:08, this is definitely a problem with a lot of mods, even for Half-Life 2. A huge amount of mods throw Combine Soldiers at you, before you get good arsenal, while in HL2 that didn't happen until after the Ravenholm where you had most of your arsenal (missing only Crossbow and RPG).

I hear you on the VR adoption rate, Philip. Personally, it's going to be a perpetual uphill struggle to get people to buy and use VR devices because, as you said, you have to clear a space for it in your house, which just isn't realistic for people who live with their parents (due to permission issues) and children (due to safety concerns). If it can't be done realistically in a normal family home, it's probably not going to catch on.

I think the future of VR is devices like the oculus quest. Fully standalone, no need for a PC, no need to set up any base stations for tracking, no tether, can be played basically anuwhere, it's just really convenient and I feel like that's what's most important over Resolution or fidelity There'll still be a place for more premium experiences with the likes of the index and the Vive but I think standalone headsets are how VR will really become mainstream

F.Y.I if you're using teleportation because you have issues with motion sickness, you should know this is correctable! I also had issues with smooth locomotion, but now having sorted it out, I strongly recommend you also give it a try too, since it feels more immersive to not teleport! All you need to do is expose yourself to small amount of smooth locomotion gameplay over a long period. Only a little, make sure to stop as soon as you start feeling a little queasy and take a good break. Keep this up, and over time, you'll find you're able to play for longer and longer until you're not having anymore issues! It might take a few days or weeks or months (about a month for me) but I find that everyone gets there eventually.

I will definitely give this a playthrough. I got into VR because of Half-Life: Alyx (no way a big fan of the HL series wouldn't play the newest release, plus I had been interested in VR for quite some time). I've played other things since then that give me very similar feelings and experiences, but honestly... I'm not sure anything matches HL:A in terms of polish, pacing, and visual fidelity. Getting a chance to experience more of the Source 2 engine in VR is an easy decision for me. Hell, despite not originally being made for it, HL2:VR was some of the most fun I've had in a game this year.

I really wish there were more "VR Ports" that could at least help justify the upfront cost. You don't need a first person perspective either, like how Moss controls, and it doesn't look like a lot of effort needs to be expended to do these kinds of ports. Hell, some could just straight up be subnautica-style "play woth your controller, you just use your headset as POV". After some initial rounds of shitty VR ports, hopefully they'd then get better at drastic rates. ... Granted, I say this, and Borderlands 2 VR is a thing that Gearbox never touched again, so *shrug*. I feel like the VR community might gobble up anything quality at this point, as we're so starved, but I wonder how sales reflect the efforts...

HLA allowed your hands to interact with a lot of things even without grabbing them which is awesome, the Bone games do the same thing, but they also do that with the movement, no more teleportation, you have to physically climb onto a surface. Try them, its well worth it. The bodylog in bonelab alone is an emense leap forward

I recently moved my home office to another room in my home and turned my existing office into the "playroom" for my kid (a lot more floor space). So I left the Index base stations in there and ran a fiber DisplayPort cable and an active USB 3.0 cable through the wall, attic, and back down the wall. Now I can plug in my Index in the playroom and start VR on my desktop. Then I can play in a large room that doesn't even have the heat and noise from my desktop in it. It's incredible and I can't wait to try this mod/expansion.

I haven't even finished Half life Alyx. I am somewhere at the beginning where you meet that blind alien and the light goes out. throwing stuff in VR is still something I need to get used to scine I usualy let go of things based on theire momentum and in VR my hand stops I release the trigger to let the object fly, but because my hand stopped the object just falls on the ground and that enemy gets me. So when I play VR I usualy stick to Beatsaber, where I try to be on top of my friendslist in all games.

tbh the primary thing stopping me from getting a vr headset is the cost. Even for the meta quest 2, which seems to be a fairly good option (idk what is currently great in vr space) is still like 500 cad$ and the valve index and htc vive are obviously much more expensive. In addition to this I might need to upgrade my PC just for vr to run well meaning I might need to spend another 400$ (assuming someone would buy my older parts) just to get new parts. Following this I would need to buy new games as well. And all this just so I might like VR enough to play it like twice a week.

I'm sorry but after I played it the music and environments are the only highlights. The dialogue is a parody of itself, the final bits of the game are a slog and the body animations of the two characters we're trying to rescue feels like it was animated in an afternoon. They got Russel quipping left and right when it was more Alyx's trait and even then it was more subdued. Russel's humor is his love for tech over people and comes from his silly reactions. One of the characters we're trying to save sounded like a stilted man in his basement.

Another big reason for the lower adoption rate of VR (on PC, at least) is the cost. I'd have to spend at least a grand on a computer that can handle VR and at least another few hundred dollars on the actual VR equipment. I suspect VR will see more adoption when it undergoes a few more changes. I'm not sure exactly what those will be, but in its current state it seems a bit odd. Clicking on the ground to move? I understand it's to avoid motion sickness but dude, it feels like we're back in the 80s with those arcade shooters on rails. Once we have widespread full finger gloves with haptic feedback, and find some solution to the motion sickness, I think it will be more widespread. Or alternatively maybe we should just use the headset (for wider FOV) with a keyboard and mouse?

There are a LOT of very good custom maps but most of them are nowhere at this level of quality. From the top of my head I can mention a handful that are near this level of quality but most of them are really short. Loco-motive, Incursion, Gunman contracts 1&2, Alyx Bond. As Philip said, Levitation feels more like an official expansion with new gorgeous outdoor locations, custom animations and voice acting and level design that surpasses the official levels.

I want to start by saying the mod is fantastic, has a lot of love and hard work behind it, my complaints really just fall on the game its built on feeling honestly outdated for a VR game imho what Levitaion made me realize is why I didn't return to HL:A Boneworks/Lab has spoiled me, I can't go back to HL:A without feeling restricted,I know its in the name of accessibility but I've never liked the idea of accessibility at the cost of gameplay which I feel like all VR games I play end up, I just always think to myself "man this game would be better if I could jump" or "this game would be better if I moved a lot faster" I'm not asking every game to be boneworks, some games will focus on other things, like story for HL:A, but VR should always be gameplay first, when your in the game the gameplay is much more in your face I played all of HL:A when I first got VR and loved it, but man does it cater specifically to that audience hard, as a VR veteran now it feels hard returning to Alyx I also hope VR can get off this accessibility high its on because I feel for every 1 player that it helps be actually able to play VR 2 players get turned away, I've had brand new VR users that wanted to play Boneworks first, even though I warn them it can be intense they still want to, and to my surprise they would play just as I would and not feel motion sick at all, and after I have them play HL:A they end up with similar opinions to what I have now what I'm trying to say is that accessibility 9/10 comes at the cost of gameplay, and that gameplay cost may turn more users away from VR then it helps bring in I also want to add that what is an accessibility feature for one player can be the opposite for another, for me that is teleport I've NEVER gotten motion sick with smooth locomotion, but teleport always makes me motion sick, something about just appearing in a new spot just turns my brain to mush, games that solely use teleport like robo recall are just unplayable for me, and I think thats why I struggle to reenjoy HL:A, Valve themselves said that smooth locomotion was an afterthought and because of that the game really relies on teleport, being someone that can't use teleport it leads to me not enjoying the game, I know the feeling is inverse for people who can't use smooth locomotion, I'm not saying all games should, I'm more saying that if a game wants to focus on 1 movement type then ONLY use that movement type, I'd rather have no experience with a game then a watered down one using again Boneworks/lab as an example, the game uses solely smooth locomotion, this allows stress level zero to make the game designed around smooth locomotion and use it to its full potential I don't think I'd have nearly as many complaints about HL:A if it didn't have smooth as an option at all, I would just not be able to play it and I can accept that, not every game can be designed to be playable for every human on the planet, and VR pushes that to 11

One problem that VR faces is that it feels like older or lower quality content isn't worth experiencing compared to what is current. For example many people enjoy going back and playing old desktop games, even now sometimes I find myself booting up really old games like doom or half life, but with VR it can be really jarring to go back to old games, because the innovations that have been made in both design and technology are so much more important to your immersion in VR, I almost never find myself playing "old" vr games like robo recall or Arizona sunshine despite enjoying them immensely when they came out. WIth VR I'm always playing a new game, or a new update for a game still being supported. This isn't just with older games, but also ones that are different. I wont be trying levitation because I don't like the combat in half life alyx, I personally find that being able to hold a gun with two hands really effects my immersion so in games like hla where you cant they just end up feeling arcadey. Basically there are games that do a thing really well, for example shooting guns in h3vr, and that "ruins" other VR games, because I just wish the mechanics were more like the game I prefer, which is something that I don't feel for normal desktop gaming.

After months of keeping my Quest 2 on the shelf collecting dust, last month I decided to give in to the hype and try out the supposedly "revolutionary" Bonelab, only to find out it just another sandbox game with no single player content that is worth playing. I believe people don't play VR not because it's high effort, but because there is almost no game that is worth that effort. Of course there are Alyx, Skyrim VR with mods, and a handful more... but are any of them recent? What games have come out for VR in the past year that are worth playing?

@@cheezkid2689 Replayability of what? Replaying the same game with the same puzzles but with a different skin? I can understand your point if you are referring to community made content, but I don't find it fun to play around in a sandbox. Maybe you do. I'm mostly frustrated with the fact that I expected a Boneworks sequel and all I got is the same thing with less stuff with the excuse of "the community will take care of the content".

Well being an early adopter is like that. I hope you dont mald at devs for not ending themselves with overwork so you could get a VR game faster. P.S: You could just play beatsaber. Also there's a good chance VR will just never take off. People aren't patient enough, or maybe they just dont care and never will.

The puzzles in levitation werent good in my opinion, It felt like not only was i trying to solve a puzzle but also find the thing at the same time, or find which door/hidden path it unlocked. Also, just not enough resin, the vanilla weapon upgrades were balanced around a longer campaign, the only upgrade i ever did was the magazine upgrade for the pistol, i just never found enough to get any of the others i was interested in, i like the iron sights and also feel like saving the resin for the other upgrades is a better expenditure, but i never really got the opportunity to do even that.
