People generally don't want Alyx to be the first game just for MASSIVE spoiler reasons. Other than that, totally agree. Especially your point about boneworks. Alyx was intended to be people's introduction to VR. Valve succeeded splendidly with that. How ever, I wish they pushed it just a bit further. It makes me enjoy boneworks a lot more than alyx for the gameplay alone. Also, I hope you have caught up on the other Half-Life games since this video LOL

3:22 While this is true, I feel like in most of my time with Alyx, I just naturally moved around obstacles like one would expect anyways. I imagine Valve realized that, and also decided having full arm collision ended up hurting the experience more than helping it- imagine being in a shoot out but then not being able to throw a grenade because your virtual elbow that you cant control catches on a brick.
@Bandit1379.3 жыл бұрын
This is actually very true, you CAN physically move to do every action. Just because it prompts you to use a jump/teleport doesn't mean you actually have to do it that way. There is even a large vent later in the game that you can remove the panel on and have to crawl into, you find a live headcrab next to a hardhat, and after killing the headcrab you can crawl to a vertical shaft where you can stand up and get a resin. If you try to use any of the 'normal' movement types to get in you are kept outside the vent.
@bzqp22 жыл бұрын
Based on just the controlers they can't figure out where your arms are really. Having floaty hands was the greatest move they did for immersion.
@colin3ds12 жыл бұрын
Well this game was in development before boneworks was around and was always built with teleporting and floating hands which was the standard at the time of developing But VR players got more and more used to things like having a full body Using melee weapons and smooth locomotion One advantage alyx has though is that its very accesible if you want someone to try VR for the first time
@sirspamalot40142 жыл бұрын
@@bzqp2 Boneworks does a VERY good job of it, you stop paying attention to the little differences between your real elbows and your VR elbows after a while, but you're aware enough of them that you move in such a way your arms don't collide with stuff. The brain is a strange organ, it'll figure stuff out even when it doesn't make sense
@milddiffuse2 жыл бұрын
@@sirspamalot4014 Idk, I like Boneworks for the fact that it's doing all that full body physics stuff, these systems are what make Boneworks fun. At the same time tho, so much of that game is just trying to get past all the jank. Valve has a history with physics in their games, but I think they generally don't like to rely on systematic game design to such an extend. Everything you can see and do in Alyx is pretty much perfectly polished, I definitely can't say the same about boneworks.

Obviously I don't watch your videos because I agree with them, but man I cannot disagree more about having a body in VR. Since there is no actual full body tracking having a body that doesn't match my actual body takes me out of vr so much more than having floating hands. Editing to say, obviously this is not a dig on the video. Top notch as always 👌
@jacenolmsted62933 жыл бұрын
I can totally agree! Having a body in a vr game should be entirely dependent on if you have full body trackers. I don’t, and games that give you an untracked, confusing meat torso are way less immersive
@MiloTheKid54543 жыл бұрын
Interesting, I'm the exact opposite. I much prefer having a full body like in Boneworks/Blade amd Sorcery rather than floaty hand in almost every other VR game. I don't have full body tracking (yet) but seeing my forarm and elbows in game allow me to completely forget about my real form and focus on my in game actions more.

tbh I would've preferred having a full body. As much as Blade & Sorcery can be janky, I forget that the ingame body isn't my real body most of the time.
@The1337guy13 жыл бұрын
Full bodies have a lot of work ahead before they're more than a novelty. B&S and Boneworks both suffer from issue that is visibility. VR already tunnel visions me hard enough without needing to do neck gymnastics to just look down past a full body. And I'm tall so it's extra weird when the height detaches and you stand there in a half squat when I'm just relaxing my posture.
@socks24413 жыл бұрын
without perfect full body tracking a full ik body in vr is far less immersive. certainly cool. but not realistic. i would be curious to see if that changed with perfect full body tracking so everything is 1:1. but as it is i think they made the right choice with just physics based floating hands.
@jogolord81223 жыл бұрын
@@The1337guy1 Still, I do appreciate the effort. Having a full body in Boneworks can be counter-intuitive, but being able to jump on enemies until they yell in pain is always fun. It just needs more time to develop, and I see why it wouldn't be in Alyx.
@Playuh3 жыл бұрын
I dislike full body because most games that have them place items on the in-game-hip instead MY hip, so if I’m crouched in a shooter and need to find a magazine from my in-game-hip and my “body” is folded the wrong way, then I can’t reach the mag. I personally have this as a huge problem in Boneworks, Onward, and Zero Caliber. The games that solve not needing to reach for my in-game hips have been games like Population One with float-load mags, and Stormland with weapons being attached to the specific viewpoints such as where my real hips and real shoulders are. It’s ok for my character to have a body, but don’t make it so I have to play twister when I’m crouched just for something that I could just grab from my real hip.
@Oliver-jz1en3 жыл бұрын
Unless you have full body tracking, having a body outline when you look down is difficult. In Pavlov there's specific pouches you have to grab things from and when your body is further back from the outline in VR it's then difficult and breaks the immersion

Your reaction to the antlion grub getting crushed was priceless. On a serious note, I've grown up on the Half-Life games which are and always will be my favorite fictional series of any medium, to the extent that they are my number 1 inspiration for my own creative drive as an aspiring author. So after 10 years of no new Half-Life games after such an infamous cliff hanger, it took a bit of a toll on my mental state and creative drive. I started accepting that I would never see a continuation of the series that grew up watching my dad and brother play before finally playing it myself. Then I saw the trailer for Half-Life Alyx and I had to do everything in my power to not become a bumbling mess of joyful tears while at work. Fast forward a few months, and I'm sitting on the floor of my bedroom with an Index strapped to my face, half laughing, half crying because I finally played a new Half-Life game and GOD DAMN WAS IT THE BEST GAME I'VE EVER PLAYED. As a life long Half-Life fanatic, HLA is beyond special to me. For me, games with bodies/arms often put me into a bit of an uncanny valley of movement, because they are SO VERY CLOSE to real life that the parts where they go wrong stick out like a sore thumb. Like getting a pump action shotgun stuck on the wrong side of your support arm, or leaning forward to open a door and having it run into your leg. Stuff that makes you go "but that's now how I would move if _____ was real." I find the disembodied hands to be juuuust enough of an abstraction that any tiny issues don't yank me out of the experience. The development landscape of VR is so new, that I feel like people are still getting a handle on how to build interaction mechanics. It reminds me of the early years of mobile game development where developers hadn't fully figured out how to optimize a control scheme where interacting with the game physically blocked part of the display.

I love your child-like delight with the little details in a game. It's truly infectious. I remember way back when, playing Half-Life and the first time I was grabbed by a barnacle (the ceiling pimple you called it). It scared the crap out of me and I couldn't figure out why I was rising up into the air! Good times.

Image if there was an easter egg that the valve guy at 7:15 randomly turned around one time

Im 57 & played Half Life when it first came out on a PC. The sheer scope & the pace amazed me. The unwitting hero Gordon made the game shine. Ive played Half Life 2 since & loved it. Will get around to Alyx as I enjoyed having Dawg's company. That Robo Dog was awesome

When I left a comment on waiting for 100k, my man had 7k subscribers. I thought he could get there by the end of the year! But no, he had to go and get 70k in two freaking months! But anyway, love ya Habie, hope to see you in VR sometime.

From 7 to 100 in a year? Most channels do that over many many years. Talk about optimistic. Awesome that he's defied the odds and given the break he deserves though.

Being someone who grew up with half life, witnessing someone having their first contact with the series is an absolute blast for me to watch. I hope you eventually go through the other games and show us how your experience went.

A spoiler isn't a spoiler until you think it is, I watched a video that had the ending of HLA in it but I hadn't played the half life games at the time, so by the time I played it, I had completely forgotten about it.

I'm so glad you've come into the series! I've been playing since 2001. I'm glad they made an installment that not only holds up the lore, but holds up a series we'd almost lost hope in. Have fun! Don't worry about which door you come in...as long as you don't foray into Silent Hill through the Homecoming door...or the downpour door. wrong doors.

I really like how you took Leadhead’s style and made it your own. I honestly thought this was a lead head video for a second, but the wording, delivery, and interjection of in game audio and commentary were different enough to make a difference. I really enjoy it. Good work!
