what completely ruined the smut scenes for me, no matter how fanfiction-y-enough-to-be-satisfied-with the buildup was, was his cringeworthy commentary throughout. dirty talk is okay, fine even, but in this case, if i recall correctly, at some point, he says, “you’re so edible, Olive” and i just could. not. do. it.

I think I disliked it more than ya'all because I pegged Olive as being way too passive and would have preferred her to be making bad decisions or misinformed ones. I got that Olive didn't move the plot, the plot moved Olive.

38:10 - Wait, wait...the school froze his grant money because they think he might take another job offer - but will give it to him if he dates someone?! Dude, that is NOT supposed to happen! Academics take interviews other places and negotiate and move their grant money around pretty frequently. Then again, schools ALSO usually have policies against faculty dating grad students, even if they aren't THEIR grad students! Even if there's a loophole...look, they might be too scared of him to steal your pipettes, but both your reputations are gonna be damaged. The gossip will not be kind. 1:38:30 - He was closely watching her since she was a first year!? Eww, eww, eww! I mean, those first 2 years are the time when she could plausably have been in his classes (so he should absolutely NOT have just asked her out!). I could ALMOST go with this if I thought he only thought about her romantically after she randomly kissed him but this? NO! Speaking as an academic myself: I think this book might make me tear my hair out. And I don't wanna be bald, so...nah. But re. 55:00 - Yes, you absolutely CAN fail a PhD! In most STEM fields, at least, you take a qualifying exam in year 2-3 which includes defending your thesis proposal. You can fail the exam, and if you fail twice you can get kicked out of the program. Likewise, if your funding guarantee runs out and there are no TA spots that need to be filled and your dissertation isn't at a stage where it is defensible...it isn't a situation anyone wants to be in.

As much as I think fanfic published like this is really cheap and lazy, I LOVE you guys for actually reading and analysing the books you read FAIRLY AND THOROUGHLY. A thousand times more interesting than someone just going 'oh yeah! it's a book! wow how cringe!'

"It's not your ami, it's my ami" Whut? Lol! 😂I love that! Tbh, the whole fake dating plot doesn't sound too bad. Until you got to the part where you described the explicit scene I was like "hmm, maybe I'll pick this up for a beach read when I go on holiday", but then there was the whole "you don't know what the f--- I want" hand on the crotch thing (99% sure it would have been better if it was just the gesture and not the cringy line - this is trash-Cris speaking, I salute trash-Katie)... so umm, it's a no from me. Like Katie said, maybe if it were free in its original fanfic form, then I'd give it a try.

Just thought I'd chime in with this, hopefully a helpful fyi: so when you're demisexual (like me), you don't experience what is called 'primary sexual attraction', which is based on physical appearance and characteristics. So, basically, you won't go: "oh wow this stranger/acquaintance is super sexy, I could see myself having fun with them, sexually (under the right circumstances, of course, given everyone has discriminatory criteria for casual sexual encounters)". So, for my part, I never find strangers/acquaintances "hot", or "sexy". I may find them aesthetically pleasing, but that's more akin to finding a flower, bird or painting aesthetically pleasing, if that makes sense. I don't want to have sex with those things just because I find them pretty, nor would I sexually fantasise about those things just because I find them pretty/pleasing to the senses. Same goes with people, then. But when we connect with someone on an intimate, emotional level... that's when sexual attraction can potentially start to come in. The degree of emotional connection required for sexual attraction to become possible will also vary from demisexual person to demisexual person. Sex drive, for its part, is orthogonal to this process: it may be low, average, or high, just as for anyone else. For my part, when I'm in a relationship with a partner I love, my sex drive is high, but it isn't high for anyone but them.
@haggisaАй бұрын
As a demisexual, that’s exactly how I experience attraction. 😊 People I don’t know on a certain emotional level, no matter how attractive or visually pleasing they are, may just as well be pieces of furniture to me, sexually speaking.

I haven't read this book but based on your review this sounds like Adam Sackler (from hbo show Girls) fanfic. He hates sweet food and one of his weird quirks is that he says crazy stuff during sex but completely forgets what he said afterwards.
@thebeeseliseАй бұрын
I hadn't considered this as ReyLo fanfic, but you're 100% right. And now that I see it, Hazelwood's decision to make Adam Jewish is so much more creepy. Adam Driver isn't Jewish. Like she just decided that the cold, pragmatic man with dark, curly hair and a big nose must be a Jew. Also (and this is a problem I had with the book from the get-go), don't make one of your main characters a minority if you aren't going to explore that. Yeah, lots of Jews are nonpracticing or don't engage much with the community. But even that doesn't exist in a vacuum and would impact his relationships. His Judaism really only comes up for a wit about Hanukkah that comes off as 'it's fine, he's not one of the serious Jews'. He could have been an atheist and it would have changed NOTHING. At first I'd thought that she wanted to make him Jewish for #inclusion and went with some stereotypical Jewish description, which is bad but par for the course. But the idea that he's based on a real person and because that person has features present in Jewish caricatures that her character ought to be Jewish is SO GROSS.

If you have a character who is clearly Kylo Ren but you are pretending he is NOT Kylo Ren, the correct name for him should be Matt. (Also, if you have not seen the SNL skit for Undercover Boss: Starkiller Base, please take a minute to fix that.)

adam driver is the most uncanny looking man i've ever seen. he looks like a video game character designed by an alien whose only concept of what a human looks like is a list of all the body parts and where they go. like....i KNOW that man is one broken line of dialogue away from snapping into a t-pose and clipping through the floor. when you were talking about the spice scenes i kept picturing his mouth glitching into her nose and his hand doing that video game hover an inch away from her body.
