Unfortunately Half as Interesting Incorporated does not have an $800 million topic R&D budget, so our low-budget alternative is to bully you all into giving us topics for free (well, sort of for free--we send free HAI t-shirts to anyone who suggests one we use, after a little while.) So, submit your topic idea here if we're going to call you a nerd: docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfUdlvw6YgU44J8AnM2U_ZvRMyvh_CUM51LYSqF5nYJB9d1-w/viewform?usp=sf_link

Should just make a network of boats with super strong tasers and put them in all waters to kill all the fishes and repopulate them with native species. Some of the waters are mostly made out of carps anyway.

Which is a pretty stupid way of thinking, the best thing you can do is kill them as soon as you catch them an then throw them back into the water, that way other creatures like baby bluegills, or crawfish can feed on their remains.

I'm 100% certain the Army Corp of Engineers would have gone with fish taser. Sadly, "taser" falls under the trademark of Taser International. "Electric dispersal barrier" was probably the backup name that the designers went with. It allowed the device to have a cool name, but also an acronym they could reference in every other sentence to make military jargon sound even more like a scrambled recitation of the alphabet.

If the song of There Was an Old Lady Who Swallowed a Fly has taught me anything, they just need a bigger fish to eat the Asian Carp. Perhaps the Alligator Gar. Then just bring in Alligators to hunt the gar. Bring in raccoons to take care of the baby alligators. Coyotes for the raccoons. Brown bears for the coyotes. Tigers for the bears. Umm. How does song end again? Ohhh, nevermind.

2:44 so I thought it was crazy that Lake Michigan’s fishing industry was less than half the size of its recreational boating industry, but astoundingly the domestic fishing industry nationwide is dwarfed by the recreational boating industry, which is more than six times the size of the former. Even if you include imported fish, it’s still about two-and-a-half times larger. America, you are an odd duck.

Frikin Lasers! I wish they would spend money on technology that has off shoots. Not just purpose made off the shelf tech. Why not have sentient robot muder fish. Why not have sharks with Lasers, neuralink and satellite hive mind connectivity. Why not have autonomous submarines with anti carp torpedoes.

Ok question: Suppose I was a creator of chaos and I stole some Asian carp from the Illinois river and I wanted to go over to Lake Michigan to create a carp apocalypse. What's stopping me? Are there any enforced laws that stop me?

Potentially a class action or regular lawsuit from the people who suffered financial losses, which may probably include all the great lake states, and they come after you for damages. They could also probably get a few million separate charges of property damage or reckless endangerment, maybe murder if the collapse of the great lakes economy results in some suicides considering you knowingly and maliciously did this. Although it would be pretty much impossible to track down that it was you who did it (unless you leave a youtube comment about this plan like you just did)... The search area for potential suspects would basically be anyone in over a dozen states in the entire mississippi river basin, cross referenced with anyone in the 8 states bordering the great lakes, where they would have to have your vehicle and license plate tracked down across multiple state lines and potentially along thousands of miles of rural roads, and eliminate every other person traveling between the two watersheds. All you really have to do is show up with a fishing pole somewhere along the mississippi and start catching, put them in a few buckets or tubs of water with an aerator and battery power supply to keep the fish alive and drive it over to the great lakes to dump em in. You can basically ruin hundreds of thousands of lives over the course of a weekend if you really wanted.

@@elegantbiscuityt Exactly, I'm not interested about the aftermath of what happens. I'm just a little confused that because of how simple it is why no one has done it yet. So I guess it's really that easy?

there are also fish and wildlife services in most of these states, that keep an eye on who has fishing licenses, how fish are large scale transported and other things. but really ther is no preventative force to stop you only retalitory, as if you are publically revealed as the perpetrator, you will have the residents of multiple states and canadian provinces at your throat.

Assuming anyone actually figured out it was you, I'm pretty sure ecoterrorism has crimes defined to cover pretty much anything you can do with the intent of damaging the environment (especially commercially important parts of the environment cause money). * Edit: I mean non-sanctioned actions of course. If you can figure out how to make destroying the environment in that way profitable and get a license from.. somebody.. then freedom baby!

I've heard about this being an issue of them almost being in 4-5 years ago, it would be hard to believe they aren't in already. Not that all the slaughter houses on the Kalamazoo River is already destroying Lake Michigan with all the pollution. Not to mention the breaking pipeline under the Mackinac Bridge.

That's not entirely accurate. Due to gravitational variances on the surface of the earth, time varies slightly. But then I think that is 'relative to the observer' so I guess it depends on whether you are located at that same place in Africa or not :-P

I knew what this video was about before I even opened it! I work on a Mississippi River tow boat and I've been all the way up the Illinois River to the Chicago sanitation canal (Chicago dumped raw sewage into the CSC until the 1980s) . I've been through the electric fish barrier many times. Every time we pass through it the captain makes us get inside and close the doors...I doubt we could get shocked outside the boat but thats just policy. Something you missed is the lock diagram you made had it flushing water out south bound and the boat and barges dropping and going north bound but north bound tows have to go UP for elevation increases so this flushing diagram you made doesn't work.

Couldn't they have created a large conveyor that sticks out of the water that can carry the boats along but leaves the fish, since they'd be in the open air and can be either removed manually or would suffocate. Some places already have a system like this for other reasons but it could be more effective and cheaper.
