Up until the 2021 TLX, Acura's "Active Sound Control" wasn't prerecorded engine noise, it was noise CANCELLATION. Active Sound Control was disabled in Sport driving modes, allowing drivers to hear real engine sound. Starting with the 2021 TLX turbo 4-cylinder engine, a specific frequency harmonic is piped into the sound system to make 4 cylinders (kinda) sound like 6. The system still isn't outright "prerecorded" sound, but it's messing with real sound to make it sound like an older Acura.
@captainevenslower44002 жыл бұрын
@Jake Krause works best if you can find the source i e the specific speaker like in VWs and simply cut it. If the system works via the in car audio speakers it might get difficult. If you are lucky you might have a specific fuse that you can pull.

In 2016 I bought a used 2010 sedan that had heated and cooled seats. I'd never been in a car with cooled seats. So, when I was test driving it I kept noticing a white noise sound over my shoulder. At first I thought there was something like a cabin-wide version of noise cancellation that maybe had a janky set of microphones or something. Then I thought, well maybe one of the windows is slightly cracked or maybe there is an air leak along a door seal. It took a moment for my ears and my brain to work out the sound of the forced air in the leather seat cushions.
@MastrCake2 жыл бұрын
Incorrect. The 2021 TLX onwards has both systems. Active Noise Cancellation is still there to cancel out wind, road noise, and the low RPM groan that comes with at an engine’s cruising speed. It was never made to make a 4 sound like a 6, as it’s very present on their V6s. In addition to that system, which is still very much there, they have Active Sound Control which… well, makes every Acura do it’s best NSX impression. Which is a V6. This new system is the one that makes their four sound like a six. Source: me, who owns a 2020 RDX with both systems and a 20 year old Accord with a detuned variant of the NSX V6.
@MastrCake2 жыл бұрын
@Jake Krause you mean RDX? I have one too, there’s no tweaking the system. That said, roll down your window and you’ll clearly hear the turbo sound actually isn’t fake. The engine sound is enhanced though.

Sound engineering is actually one of the most important aspects of passenger vehicles today. The Lotus Evora has the same engine as a typical high end Toyota, but the sounds in and out of the cabin are totally different for each car. Also, playing sounds loudly is not only for the excitement of the driver, but it makes them more likely to upshift/slow down since it creates the feeling of going fast.
@internetbodhi10092 жыл бұрын
Except they can see the peripherals and the speedometer. Doesn't matter how loud a car is if its only doing 50. I can drive my Tercel and it'll make a hell of a noise, but it isn't going anywhere fast.
@TheZanzaroni2 жыл бұрын
@@internetbodhi1009 If you look at the speedometer you will reach or maintain your desired speed, but subconsciously, you'd feel like you're going faster than what you actually are. A similar strategy is employed in city engineering when designing rural roads, placing trees and large objects close to the road, seeing them towering near you while at speed, making you go at or below the speed limit to feel safe.

I'm pretty sure that Lotus Evora (the older models at least) does not have simulated engine sounds, that's against Lotus stands for. Why the Evora sounds angelic while a V6 Camry doesn't us for a few reasons. First, the Lotus is supercharged, this adds wonderful sound, and the exhaust system is very different than a toyota. The Lotus is a mid engine car with headers, free flowing mufflers, and an overall shorter dual exhaust system. This makes a huge different in sound.

As an e92 M3 owner I’m legally obligated to drag newer M car owners about how their cars have fake sound pumped though their speakers and how absurd that is. Sound is probably the most important thing to me in an “enthusiast car”. I’ve got nothing against the move to more efficient and electric cars, but I’d be hard pressed to purchase a car that pumps fake sound as a “toy”. I’ll keep the M3 forever, and I could see as time marches forward adding a couple more classic cars to the garage, but anything after like 2018 is just a way to get from point A to point B for me. I just don’t care about it that much from an enthusiast’s perspective.
@RayQ1012 жыл бұрын
@@CraigMarolf The pumped in engine noise is a simple code you can disable, it’s unnoticeable on the F90/G8x generation cars. He gave an example from the F10/F80 cars that were first gen systems. @@RayQ101 i made zero mention of speed. Correct me if I’m wrong, we’re talking about sound here, right? I mean, if all I cared about was speed I’d just buy a Tesla (with all the charisma of a toaster) and be done with it. Speed is a commodity now and everything today is faster than the fastest things a decade ago. The one thing that will never make a comeback is the engine sound. And that’s why I brought up the e92 M3, arguably one of the best sounding BMWs (behind maybe the original M1 and the e60 M5). I’m not sure where you’re getting the numb steering thing from. That’s the first time I’ve ever heard anyone not praise the e9x steering. You may be mistaking it for the F8x’s electronic steering. But again, we’re talking about sound here, so I digress. I don’t have 8 hours to list all the cars faster than any of the cars you just mentioned. And next years will be faster than this year’s cars. There’s probably minivans being produced today that are faster than 10-20 year old M cars. Besides, accelerating super fast from red light to red light became super lame after like high school. I’m almost 40. Nobody has ever laughed at a Porsche 356 because it’s slow. Or pretty much any other classic. Yes. Of course they are slow by today’s standards. But they’re still cool.

They have external speakers that play a hum or an artificial sound. You can actually tell which brand is coming up based off their sound, it's like their own signature lol. But aside from that, you can also hear the motor whine or transistor whine as well. It's like an old TV turning on. It's like EEEEEEEEEEE, quite high pitched but it's hard to miss. You can hear that on top of all those sounds so technically, even if there weren't an external speaker, that's another option unless you're hard of hearing I guess. Also, for reference, I'm 38 so it's not one of those young people sound alert things.

Until recently I actually made the sound insulation for the Toyota, Lexus, bmw, and gmc vehicle lines. Around the engine is ~1 inch think fibreglass panels with holes cut out for wires and pipes and whatnot, and then around the wheel wells, on the floor, and in the door panels there is a thick recycled fabric material. When I worked in the factory, we used to take the fabric panels and cover our heads with them and you couldn’t even hear the super loud water nets or presses, so yeah, cars are pretty quiet now.

When cars had round air filter housings that sat on top of the carburetor on top of engine, especially V8 engines, hot rod folks would take the air filter lid off, flip it over, and put it back on. This did two things: 1) Defeated the temperature control on the intake air which allowed more colder/denser air into the engine (more air equals more fuel and power). 2) Allowed one to hear that great V8 engine sound sucking in gobs of fuel air mix.

I wonder if there is a setting (no doubt deep down beyond three "Advanced Settings" buttons) in these cars that would allow a person who doesn't need such coddling (and would therefore prefer their car as quiet as possible) to turn off the added sound. I'll probably never know, because I'm the kind who just wants to get from A to B, so I'd buy the Camry, or even a Corolla. Funny story: About 30 years ago, my husband and I were considering a particular car (I no longer remember the brand, but it was a fairly ordinary but new car, and had a manual transmission, which we preferred). He test drove it one day, and then I test drove it with the same salesman the next day. At one point while I was accelerating, a "ding" came from the dashboard. I asked, "What's that?" The salesman explained that it was telling me I should shift gears now for best performance. My immediate response was, "How do I turn it off?" The salesman laughed and said that my husband had asked the exact same questions when he drove it. Apparently the answer is that no, you can't turn it off. We did not buy that car.

You should do a video about how turbochargers defeat the laws of physics by expelling less exhaust than goes in.
@neztech.2 жыл бұрын

@bmorg72442 жыл бұрын
It's quite simple really. The turbo compresses the air so it has less volume when it exits the vehicle, where it can quietly re-expand. That's how engines work right?
