Using Silicon Carbide Grinding Disc to grind laminated glass.

Just a quick video one a girding disk someone told me about to grind glass with. Maybe I got the wrong type of grinding disk but it does work pretty good.

Greetings from Australia. Been watching a while. Cutting laminated glass You can cut laminated glass with a standard glass cutter. Then you turn it over and cut the other side on the same line. After the cut gently fracture a small area somewhere in the middle one side by using the ball on the back of the cutter and pour a small amount of metholated spirits over the fracture, I think you guys call it denatured alcohol or methyl hydrateover. While it is still wet with metho set fire to it. The metho will melt the laminate sheet and the rise in temperature will fracture the glass along the cut on both sides. The glass come away while warm pretty easy. Use more metho or a hobby knife finalise the cut. Sand it smooth with a glass grinder or sand paper glass held 90 degrees to the sander. Done this many times with laminated straight and curved sheets. Good clean no stop cuts required on both sides of the glass and you need to get the cuts accurate on each side but go easy and slow and you can get great results. Never seen toughened or hardened glass cut or altered successfully, seen plenty of good attempts. Oh we use metho as it burns clean and cool. Gas ans other flammable products leave carbon behind and discolours the laminate sheet You are very clever at simplifying complex tasks and I love the results. Keep up the great work Cheers

My wife’s dad owned a body shop from 1932 until he died. His sons ran it for about 15 years then sold out. Earl did glass too and had a wonderful 8 ft. Tall glass edging machine. 2. 1/2’ water bath. The sons sold it at some point. The perfect tool for shaping flat glass.

You might want to try a finer grit wheel. Diamond is good for finishing, the discs are expensive but last a long time.

The only reason you broke the tempered glass is because you worked too fast and allowed the glass to heat up. Just add water and grind lightly. Add water and grind lightly. The next thing you know is that you are all done and the glass does not break. Run your grinder along the edge of the glass and not across the edge and you will not get chip out. Finesse is nine tenths of success.

Looks like it is hard to find flexible sanding discs made with silicon carbide in smaller grit sizes.... It may be worth the time to try regular silicon carbide sanding discs in finer grit sizes on glass. I have never tried using zirconium discs on glass, but they may work also.... In my younger days working in a body shop that did a lot of glass work, we had an actual glass belt sander to dress glass edges. It used silicon carbide belts and had a built-in water-cooling system. Worked great. I think the health problems attributed to silicon products have scared a lot of products off the markets... Wet-sanding was great because it caused no dust....Use a mask when dry-sanding...just in case. As far as I know - NOTHING works on tempered glass.....lol Great channel - love watching your skill at fabrication. You, Sir, are a master.....

Side window glass is tempered glass. If you hammer/grind on the side end it will shatter. Reference "Prince Rupert's drop" if you want to know more. If you try to cut it with a glass cutter it will shatter. It is usually better to let someone else cut it for you. Windshield glass is called safety glass, it has the plastic scrim sandwiched in it. To cut it, you use a glass cutter on one flat side - straight cuts only - and carefully start a crack on that side but not so hard that you crack the other side. Squirt alcohol into the crack and light it on fire. Once it gets hot enough to melt the scrim, you can then quickly score and crack the other side. Make sure you support the back side from underneath otherwise it might crack in a direction that you might not like. You NEED TO PRACTICE this on scrap windshields to get the hang of it before doing it to your final piece.

Looks to me if you hold the grinder differently so that the ribs of the grinding disk are perpendicular to the glass, not parallel, it may reduce the chipping you refered to. Hope I explained that okay. Constructive criticism, not being negative. Great video! I am putting a 1956 Lincoln premiere roof on a chopped 1954 Mercury hard top so this will be helpful.

Laminated glass, or dual lite. Tempered is suprisingly tough. Unti you find the sweet spot. Saw a back window from a 65 Barracuda, tempered. All scratched,asked about it. Guy said his kids dragged it around behind snowmobile. Across roads and down his gravel driveway.

Here's an idea a blue suede leather would look awesome glued to interior roof, head linner, as I see it this will become a way excellent pickup & you could go any way you want with it. Try taping the glass both sides with gaffa tape that should reinforce the window as you grind but make sure that you cover both sides on the edge's including the part that you are grinding away. You can also try using a smooth stone disk for things like ceramics. Was funny though 😊

All good Carbide is ok but you need these Ceramic sanding pads I use My brother turned me on to them a few years ago and I have not looked back They are just like a carborundum sanding disk but ceramic instead... Deadly good Cost yes but last 10 times longer . What did you come up with on your wheel adaptors ?

I used to grind laminated glass with a belt sander that was water cooled. You really need water because the heat will cause cracking. The belts were very long, 6 or 8 feet. And it was a nasty job.

I was thinking the same thing. I believe using water would help a lot. I have a vague recollection of my Dad doing this 40 years ago. He used water. I also think a variable speed grinder could help dial it in.

@@lessharratt8719 I also polished glass with polishing belts which were cork with polishing compound built in. They were cloth backed and came in a variety of grits.

@@markeholbrook I'm thinking a belt is a lot better choice than a disc from what you are saying. That disc seemed awfully aggressive. Maybe he should have ran it over a steel bench for a bit to take the edge off. An air grinder would allow him to run water on it with out getting zapped and adjust the speed. I'm sure he'll figure it out.

your car won't be bad it's all flat you can just bring some templates to any glass shop and get it cut, I know the city is pretty expensive but you can try A&H in Steinbach there pretty cheap

I used to work for Hewlett Packard back in the late 70s. I worked in Glass fabrications and we modified TV tubes from Corning and other companies for the CRTs. When the got scratched we used silicate carbide to get rid of the it and then buff the scratch out. The buffer would take a sanded edge and make a smoooothe finish on the glass.

I done almost the same today with a shelf out of a fridge. The glass shelf above a salad drawer. I used a glass cutter to score it to cut it but it didnt do it, so I used my angle gringetr with a 1mm metal cutting disk and got about 1mm in and it blew up into thousands of redneck diamonds. lol. All I could do was laugh. I didnt know it was tempered glass. lol

I would like to see this done by the experts below giving thier knowledge on why the tempered glass broke. I was under the assumption that tempered glass is under tention and by relieving or grinding the edge you are weakening the glass making it brittle. Maybe one of the experts can show us by using a towel, keeping the glass cool etc! We could all learn something valuable.

@@HalfassKustoms you are totally correct Brent...you can Not cut tempered glass period. The procses goes like this, normal glass is cut to size and shape first. Then put through a high heat oven to temper. End of storey. No cutting at all when tempered.

Tempered glass, you cant cut it, grind it, drill it or melt a hole in it. Cody's Lab tried it and kept failing. He wanted to put a hole in tempered glass. Interesting how he tried. He could get about half way through but as soon as the half way point was reached, it shattered.

Hey Brent, that's a pretty cool grinding wheel for doing glass, after Building homes for over 20 years I moved Texas to Ohio to be close to my family I went to work for a door and window company here because like building Custom Homes we set our own windows and doors when we built the custom homes. Anyway I went to work for this company and a few times I got to help out the car glass guy money had big heavy jobs and needed a hand, don't know why you picked me I guess I was always around or willing to help. Anyway I watch you do some glass with a torch he used to heat his glass up with denatured alcohol I guess everybody has a different way of doing things. I'll tell you this guy can make just about any kind of pattern that you could throw at him, he definitely had a knack and had been doing it for a long time. Anyway that's my story and I'm sticking to it. You have quite the sense of humor usually when you're laughing about something on the videos you got me laughing and pissing my pants man keep up the great work.

We have one near here that did it for a friend of mine on a Pickup truck. he added 2 doors ( total 6 doors) . the center doors were square, so he needed special glass. he used Dodge Caravan sliding door glass that he got untempered to cut them, then re-tempered.
