the length of the fabric will ALWAYS be a third due to the nature of how a fork pleat works !! the difference in fork size will only result in a difference of the pleat's width. so no matter how big your fork is, you will always end up with a fabric that is a third of the original lengths. your pleats will just be smaller or bigger depending on the fork :)

“How much fabric you need depends on two things”… Me, expecting waist and height: yup this makes sense… “First is size of your fork” Me, falling off my chair in excited giggling: did I switch from a sewing tutorial to an explanation of food portion sizing? Well I am totally here for that!

Not gonna lie, that was the simplest easiest explanation of how to do a mitred corner I've ever seen and I've been sewing for almost 20 years 🤣 So nice to hear Aussie accents when watching sewing videos ❤ although I can't work out if you're from Brisbane or Melbourne. I'm probably completely off 😅 Gorgeous hanbok 😍🥰

I live in Korea, but I'm having a hard time getting men's hanbok jeogori. Most of them sell modernized hanbok without knots(Go-ruem). I'm training Taekkyeon, a traditional Korean martial arts, and I enjoy exercising in hanbok. But it was impossible to find a man's hanbok made of solid fabric.I want to learn something through your channel and make denim hanbok jeogori.

I'm not Korean, or asian at all, but i love both traditional asian clothing and sewing! I'd love to make something inspired by it, but I'm scared I'll offend anyone by cultural appropriation. What are your thoughts on this and would I be able to make this hanbok?
@mooondip
@mooondip 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think it’s cultural appropriation at all because you’re showing appreciation for the clothing. You’re showing respect to the original garment and most people feel very proud when we see others wear a piece of our culture as appreciation and respect. In the tutorial it’s a modernize version of the original hanbok and she explains the terms to educate others. So what I’m saying is if you want to make it you should! 🥰

Yep Michelle explained it perfectly! I'm trying to share my culture, so as long as you know the context and what it is i.e. 'heori chima' - then I think you're all good :)

This is very similar to a kilt. The difference being the waistband is narrower and kilts, by tradition, are made of a plaid wool ( dependent upon clan)

Wow, good job, the skirt looks really professionally done! I did my University thesis on female hanboks so naturally I've always wanted to make one, but never got to do it for real. Maybe because I am not good at sewing. Instead I learned to embroider and decorate clothes, which is also nice. But seeing your tutorial made me think about making the skirt once again, so thank you!

I've had this video saved for a while and I finally finished the skirt! Even though I messed up some of the measurements (I was working with a very odd striped fabric and paranoid about making it too small), it still came out great. This was such a great tutorial, very clear and well organized, so it was easy to jump back into the project whenever I had some free time. I kind of want to make another one now that I understand the garment better, and I'll definitely use this as my reference point for wrap waistbands and mitered corners. Fantastic video, and thank you so much for sharing this piece of your culture! ♥

Wow. I'm only halfway through,but I'm already impressed. I've never made a pleated skirt before, but I would probably just have sat down and carefully marked and folded and pinned and pressed (and possibly basted) everything before ever getting to the sewing part 😆. It would have never occurred to me, to just 'pleat and go' like that. How clever. Your technique for mitered corners I'll also surely try and compare to mine,!

Here's a tip - I hope you don't mind me pointing this out! The size of the fork doesn't actually matter. what matters is the percentile depth of your pleats. if your pleats lay back to back, you will have 3 layers of fabric in your pleated area at any given point. That shrinks your fabric down to a third of its length. It doesn't matter if there are many many tiny pleats back to back (although a small percentage will differ due to the number of "bends" in the fabric. The thicker the fabric, the more this matters.), or if there are a few very large pleats. So if you go with 4.5 times your waist measurement it should always be just about right. :) Lovely video btw, I'm happy to have found you!
