Drove down on 6/9/24 and stayed in Homer that week. Home now and just watching this, bringing back such great memories! Celebrated our 41st anniversary while in Alaska and wish we could every year! Out of 14 days up there only two half day’s had any precipitation, amazingly bluebird days! Love “All of Alaska” that I’ve seen over twenty+ years!

Gary did catch a 70lb halibut last August in the same waters but I feel more littles come out of these waters than bigs. How much for a typical guided fishing trip.
@LivingFreeAlaska6 ай бұрын
It really depends. Can be anywhere from $300 to $500 per person usually. This charter we got on a Memorial Day special. We had to come together with 6 people to get the special rate ($200 per person) which is super inexpensive for what we got. It was worth it in our opinion even with the smaller halibut's we caught.
@william65266 ай бұрын
That captain needs to move to find decent size fish.
@LivingFreeAlaska6 ай бұрын
Unfortunately that area is known for chickens. However with that said Gary did catch a 70lb halibut in the same general area last August.
@roblockhart84106 ай бұрын
Why would you want a big halibut for eating? Smaller halibut are way better eating fish. Plus if you keep all the big females you with destroy your fishing grounds. Don’t make the same mistakes we made down south of you. We have to go further and further away to catch halibut now. Area’s where we used to get our limits in a few minutes of trolling the bottom are ghost towns now. This whole attitude of trying to catch the biggest fish is so outdated and we as fishermen need to be conservationists so our children and grandchildren can enjoy this lifestyle we brought them up in. Now that the fishery for big Kings on the Kenai has been destroyed the halibut fishery will be next.

Alaskan halibut fishing big bait big fish seriously I usually use a salmon head and the body on my halibut rig yeah because the small house that had and the body only the big guys can they swallowed the whole thing and usually it's the halibut they're about 60 in that can do it anything under that you usually can't eat a whole big Salmon Head and bodies just so you know that's the trick big bait catches you big fish
@LivingFreeAlaska6 ай бұрын
If on our own boat that is what we would do but we had no choice as to what the charter captain was baiting us up with. Last year Gary caught a 70lb halibut in the same waters... probably due to better rigging.

@LivingFreeAlaska6 ай бұрын
That may be of your opinion but I will be brutally honest with you... our way of life is actually less expensive in Alaska than when we lived in Washington State. Would not be happy with that trip for $400+, getting chicken patched. Ideal trip for the captain, no effort, clients feel good catching all day. People need to demand more of charters, that was neither fun nor successful when you end up with 10 lbs per person if you are lucky......sad

Normally it’s around $500 per person. Sometimes the fish can be plentiful and like this day… not so plentiful. Last August Gary went out on a charter for $500 and brought home 70lbs of halibut. And at the current rate of $34-$38 a pound it is quite the savings!
@aksourdough48906 ай бұрын
Whoever is charging you $500 is ripping you off big time. Going rate right now is $350 pp and with someone who will take you to get 40-100lb+ halibut not ping pong paddles. The best halibut fishing is two hrs away but only a few charters go there. I live and fish here. Since Covid the rates have significantly increased like everything else.
