During the offseason of 1997 the Indians tried to trade for Pedro but felt that Montreal asking for Cleveland’s World Series game 7 starter (who was 21 at the time) was too much. After all, the 21 year old pitched shutout baseball against the Marlins in a winner take all game. Keep in mind that Pedro had won the Cy Young award in 1997. Cleveland said no and Boston traded for Pedro instead and immediately signed him to a 7 year 91 million dollar extension. Cleveland’s game 7 starter was out of baseball 3 years later due to recurring shoulder injuries and Pedro went on to win 2 more Cy Youngs, a pitching Triple Crown, a championship, retired in 2009 and was elected to the HOF in 2015.

This isn't accurate. Jaret Wright, Indians 1997 World Series starter (6.1 IN, 1 ER) pitched for 11 seasons, the last one being 2007 for the Orioles and had his best season in 2004 while pitching for the Braves (15 - 8, 3.28 ERA, 186.1 IN, 159 Ks)

Fact is not true. Hamilton pitched for San Diego in 1998, he did go to the Blue Jays for the 1999 season, but Clemens left the Jays for the Yankees Basically, Clements, Hentgen and Hamilton never were on the same team at the same time.

I was surprised that Pedro and Randy never faced each other. It’s Monday morning and I’m using KZbin to procrastinate anyway, so I looked it up. All in all, between the lack of interleague play pre-1997, no divisional rotation for the first few years, and the oddly coincidental timing of their league swaps, Pedro faced Randy’s teams six times, but never Randy himself: SEA (Jamie Moyer, 1998), ARI (Curt Schilling, 2002), NYY (Carl Pavano, 2005; Mike Mussina, ‘05 and ‘06), and SFG (Tim Lincecum, 2009). The more you know.

@@d.a.b2374 No, they never faced each other. Pedro was a Met from 2005-08. Johnson was a Yankee in ‘05 and ‘06, and faced the Mets four times across those two seasons, squaring off against Kris Benson twice in ‘05, and against Steve Trachsel and the late Geremí Gonzalez once each in 2006. In 2007, Johnson went back to Arizona, and in an injury-shortened year, he faced the Mets once, pitching against John Maine. He pitched a full season in 2008, but didn’t face the Mets at all. In 2009, RJ went to San Fran and Pedro went to Philly, but RJ didn’t face the Phillies that season, while Pedro won an impressive pitchers’ duel versus Tim Lincecum, who was on his way to his second straight Cy Young. They somehow never faced each other prior to 2005, either. Luck of the draw, I guess. 🤷🏽‍♂️
