Well said Doug! We are all about picking other sailors brains before heading out. In fact, that is one thing I loved about the public dock in Newfoundland. It was a good jumping off point for Greenland and Europe which meant a lot of sailors who had previously sailed in those parts were docked there, and we spent time with more than one of them asking questions about our upcoming journey. They offered a wealth of information that helped us greatly in our journey. ⚓-Monique

Yes very expensive, but very good boats, if budget was not an option H R boats are all I'd look at, I'm on a super tight 30k US budget so for me it's an early 80's Primrose designed Moody 33' centre cockpit, preferably a 333 with the saloon accessed aft owners double berth, oh for an extra 20 grand, I'm not too phased though, Moody's are good solid boats, but Halberg Rasseys are the rolls royce of offshore cruising yachts

As production cruising boats go the Halbergs are certainly hard to beat. That Moody will look after you quite well if you look after her. If you find her are you ready to go now?

People with racing experience are a wealth of knowledge because they aren't allowed to just turn on their engines when the wind changes direction and is a little too light and not directly behind them while racing like so many cruisers seem to do. They sail all points of sail and learn how to trim their sails optimally so they can sail most efficiently under all kinds of conditions.

Ah, racers and cruisers: two different types of the same animal (snowboarder vs. skier perhaps?), but I'm sure we could all learn a great deal from each other. I know when we push on a long voyage it's more of a marathon rather than a sprint...and certainly not a race. We're willing to sacrifice a bit of sail trim for comfort and conservation of energy of the crew. Constantly trimming sails would, I think, become exhausting between two people over the course of two weeks. That being said, I'm sure we all have room for improvement. There's nothing like the sound of the wind and the waves while at sea without a noisy engine in the background. (or in our case, very much the foreground!) Fair winds to you Emily! ⚓-Monique

That is my preferred cruising boat, nice size for short handed sailing, centre cockpit and strong, they are things of beauty are Hallberg Rasseys, well over my price range so a early 80's Moody 333 centre cockpit will have to do, maybe one day.......

@@drakeParagon I'm sure that every boat owner or sailor has that pot of gold at the end of the rainbow boat, EVERY BOAT is a compromise, it all depends on your objectives for the boat, the sort of sailing you want to do, and how much you can afford in maintaining her, and personal preference of course, the Moody's that I'm looking at for example are all around 40 years old, aren't keel stepped, again this is preference, have bolt on shoal draft keels, again a compromise I'm prepared to make, for the centre cockpit layout, and also the incredibly spacious and easy cockpit accessed engine compartment, just as examples of how you need to compromise, but also what you compromise on, 33' boats with 2 separate cabins are rare and are pretty much enclosed quarter berths, I plan to live full time on the boat, but don't want a large boat so the centre cockpit with two separate cabins is a priority, there are very few centre cockpit boats under 38' and then the price goes up exponentially in both purchase and maintenance costs. I'm actually a qualified artisan with both structural and mechanical engineering experience, actually I was a fabricator welder at A&P Falmouth shipyard for several years while living in the UK, so a yacht refit is just another project and like building an off-road vehicle and trailer with long range self sustainability systems Incorporated, something I've done with an old 1980 Land Rover 109" panel van, I don't really care what the condition of the interior of the boat is, I'm more interested in the bilges, and the boat systems, I'll rip all that junk out anyway and re-do every system from scratch in a clean hull and then build back from there, with modern lightweight materials and resins you can do anything nowadays. Fair winds, if you see a wee navy blue Moody called Amazing Grace then I got my boat!!😂😂😂. Although I would do a refit series on KZbin, Fair winds and as Jan said, go for it👊👊

Oh@@jonnorousseau3096, I am so intrigued by the Land Rover! I've been fascinated by the cool refits people did on their Land Rovers and somewhat obsessively went down a KZbin rabbit hole for a while. I had visions of Drake and I taking to land to explore for a bit, perhaps if we had to leave a particular country to reset our visa? Not something likely to happen, but it was really cool to see all the modifications and how creative people were. Wow, it sounds like you have a lot of experience and a great plan. Drake and I sometimes dream about gutting Paragon, installing a massive amount of insulation, and then rebuilding her. This will probably never happen, but I do dream. At some point we will probably need to replace our fuel or water tanks and that will require a fair bit of demolition. I have to say I"m not looking forward to it. We have some great ideas, in fact Drake re-designed most of the carpentry aboard Paragon, but we're not especially skilled when it comes to the actual wood or metal work. We can make something that works, but it may not be particularly beautiful. However, it sounds like you have an amazing skill set that will serve you well with a refit. I hope you're planning on doing that refit series once you have your boat...we'd love to see the progress one day! Cheers ⚓-Monique

Came across your video because I'm getting closer to finally buying a boat, and this is my current number one choice. It's amazing that the value of some of these old fg boats are climbing up, and some are very close to their original purchase price. Buying a brand new boat you would normally expect to lose ~30% to 50% if you had to sell it in 1 to 5 years. I wonder how much a used Rasmus sold for...like every ten years or so? When were they lowest cost, fully depreciated? And when did they go from fully depreciated to a boat that's increasing in price? That data is, for me, impossible to get my hands on. Obviously disregarding time value of money, and how a specific boat is equipped. Thank you for taking the time to create these videos! I watched your videos from the Erie canal. You passed right by where I live, Fairport NY. It's a great village which built up around the canal, so it's a popular stop for people using the canal. Thanks again:)

Hey Clay, there may be something in the works with Mads if we can figure things out...more to come on that later. As for the seasickness, it has gotten better. I've found something that really seems to work for me, at least most of the time, and I'm looking forward to trying it out on our upcoming voyages this spring. In fact, on our 6 day sail this past fall from Svalbard to Norway I didn't get sick at all. (!!!) Like not even a little. Didn't even feel queasy which was such a new experience for me especially since it was a pretty rolly sail. Here's hoping that continues! (✿◠‿◠) ⚓-Monique

Oh@@clayfarnet970, I can absolutely share what has helped me, but I'm afraid it's probably not going to be much help for you unless you're near the Faroe Islands. It is a seasickness pill called Koffinautin and you can only buy it in Faroe or aboard the ferry that goes from Denmark to Faroe to Iceland. I know because I called and asked if they shipped it or if it was available at an online pharmacy. No to both questions. It is seriously the only thing that has almost 100% worked for me and, as I sure you and many of our viewers know, I've tried it all. I'm thinking I'm going to have to stock up with a lifetime supply the next time I'm in Faroe. Heh! ⚓-Monique
