Great! I'm just about to start restoring a British-Market (made in USA) version of this same radio. The main differences seem to be the rectifier tube, and the filter capacitor only has 2 values in it. I can't find a schematic for my version but I fixed one up in the 1970s when I was a kid and it worked so I hope this one comes back to life. Someone has cut the mains cable and tried to earth the chassis to the mains socket which I guess is what put it out of action.

Very nice! I also have the same model S-38, with the BFO that later models did not have. Mine is from 1946, and is in pretty good shape. I have replaced all the paper and filter caps, as well as one of the mica plate-bypass caps, as it was arcing over and making a lot of static. Eventually, I plan to get one of the new back cardboard covers, as mine is missing. Still a good rcvr today!

One modification I did was to re-route the dial cord for the bandspread the opposite way on the knob shaft, so clockwise rotation results in a frequency increase, just like the main dial.

There were lots of different versions of the schematic for this one. Took a bit of deciphering. Kept the line cord original only changing the switch to the hot side. I marked hot side of the plug with a sharpie but I presently have a small isolation transformer in line. Seems to help with light dimmer noise too. CJC
