Great serviceable repair, might be a common failure on SBs. Looks like you did a little reading between take 1 and 2. I commend your determination....Dave

Hi. Is that a right hand thread or a left when unscrewing the shaft / Nice job on that Thanks
@Halligan142

Right hand thread. Only left hand I can remember off hand is the screw in the middle of the star wheel clutch.

I've been going through your 13" refurb videos over the last few weeks or more. I am in the process of refurbing a 1941 13"x5'. I couldn't find any details on how to remove the shafts from the banjo/bracket or the ones in the reversing lever. I don't think my 1 ton arbor press is big enough, and I don't have a hydraulic press (yet). Can you offer any tips on how I can get those free so I can be sure I am refurbing it the best I can?

Nice work on the vids! I have been watching your 13" restore as I am restoring my heavy 10. Besides being smaller, it was built the very same as yours like the 2 bolt spindle bearing caps w/o bronze bearings and the underdrive with bushings. My lathe has the "war" stamps on the bed but what is coolest is the tag that says "Chicago Ordinance Dist". Did you put felts in the open top jack shaft bearing castings? Did you make "caps for the tops of the bearing castings? Love the vids and keep up the excellent work!

Congratulations on the happy news. Could you give some accurate info on the torch and tips, and the exact brazing rod you used? Also the OD of the brazed part? I found this video very interesting, oxy-acet. equipment is terribly expensive here (Norway). Thanks for all the nice videos.

Basically this set with an a-5, a-11, and a-32 tip to cover my brazing needs for work hooked to a B size acetylene tank. I used 3/32 flux coated bronze rod with extra powdered flux. www.esabna.com/us/en/products/index.cfm?fuseaction=home.product&productCode=V445152

Thanks, that's good to know. I was hoping it was some sort of propane arrangement. Where I live, a small home shop size acetylene bottle is around $500 to $600, and a fill up about $200, so I'll have to stick to my big propane torch, and silver braze. Again, thanks for the videos.

Why not just turn both grooves out to the next larger ball size and drill out the hole for the ball and spring to the larger size?

Greg, I know nothing about SB lathes and listening through your audio It seemed to me your gears were set just a little close. In my ear buds it was growling. The gears those mesh with can they be adjusted. Just curious. Congrats on your daughter, Great video, have fun, Bill
@Halligan142
@Halligan142 6 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately they are in a fixed position. The only mesh that is adjustable (at least on the single tumblers) is the mesh of the first banjo gear to the stud gear.

Congrats on you guys having a daughter, Dad. Why do I get the impression that when your daughter is old enough to date, you will be waiting at the front door with a shotgun? Thanks for the interesting repair video. The braze should hold your ball in place (sexual pun intended). If it wears out, you can rinse and repeat. Are you guys finally out of the "deep freeze"? Have a good one! Dave

The best option would have been to make a new one. Ok you have to recut threads, but the part would have been perfect from the start.
