Carpenter admitted years later that the reason he added the brother-sister element was that it was very late at night, he'd had a six-pack of beers and couldn't think of anything else.

@@jdogjohnson9038 The sibling subplot was a lazy attempt to explain Michael’s nature. It lead to a convoluted mythos surrounding the character that took away from what made him so fascinating in the original film. Halloween (2018) did the series a favor by retconning that terrible addition. Halloween is my favorite franchise and I love each of them for what they are, but I’m eternally grateful for the new timeline. The original films are always there to watch but there was simply nowhere else to take that story.

@@donnybuoy I personally liked the whole narrative of them being related and Michael coming after his sister relentlessly without reason. In fact, I find that it’s much more scarier and terrifying that someone with superhuman abilities in your bloodline, whether it be a sibling or an uncle, is hellbent on coming after you, no matter what. I also find that the whole sibling aspect is one of the elements that make the Halloween franchise stand out from the others. I can completely understand why they retconned it, though. And personally, I don’t have a problem with it, even though I do prefer the sibling narrative. I hated the Thorn plot, though.

@@donnybuoy Being that this was their first watch, I can understand where they're coming from. However, if you remove the critic optics for a sec, it's really just supposed to be a kinda silly, albeit fun, slasher flick sequel - which it does succeed in. It's not too pretentious for its own good, it has a tense 3rd act, has a killer score, an ominous setting, & you can even argue Donald Pleasence is at his best in this one. It ain't better than the original, but it does work as a worthy, fun successor (maybe minus the brother/sister revelation 😅).

A lot of people weirdly love this film and consider it nearly on par with the original which I find incredibly baffling. I don't hate it by any means (Shaun's 5.8 sounds about right for me) but it's just an inferior copy of the first film set in a hospital. Everything the film does the first one did better and by virtue of trying to seem like a continuation, I feel it only makes the flaws more glaring. You guys should definitely do Halloween III at some point and treat it more as its own film rather than a Halloween sequel. An underrated film that I'm glad a lot of people are finally coming around to.

You should watch the Dead series by George Romero (Night of the living dead, which you should have no trouble with copyright for that film since it is in the public domain, than Dawn Of The Dead and finally Day of The Dead. I know there are more in the dead series but I consider those the golden 3)

For me, this is where the franchise should have ended or at least Halloween 4. Even Carpenter wanted to end it with this sequel but you can't keep Myers down. Halloween 2018 was just ok. Halloween 2 will always be the true sequel. 2018 was just H20 mixed with Halloween's greatest hits. I like the idea that it takes place on the same night and the hospital setting was a good choice.

Shaun got it right, just a series of different killings with no continuing story. Also, in the early 1980s was a trend where there was a big twist to the original story (Michael & Laurie are siblings). 1980's The Empire Strikes Back and 1983's Psycho II also had big reveals in them. 2018 Halloween was better than the 1981 sequel, but the 1978 original was the best of all.

One of the main complaints about Halloween 2 was too much of an assumption that the audience would have seen the 1st Halloween movie and wouldn't need to be dragged into the storyline. They didn't try hard enough to grab the audience's attention in the 2nd movie. I like to watch them back to back. I think it helps compensate for that flaw and keeps the anxiety going.

In the original ending, which I believe was shown as part of a televised version, it revealed that Jimmy (last seen in the car on the horn) is alive and well. He's also in the back of the same ambulance that Laurie is put in. There's also a televised version of the original that includes more info on Michael Myers and addition scenes.

Also fun fact, the director of this movie, Rick Rosenthal, actually had directed the film to follow the same type of suspenseful, low-gore approach that Carpenter took with the first one, but it was actually Carpenter who went in and did reshoots of certain scenes, like the death scenes to add gore, because he wanted it to be more alike the other slashers coming out at the time.

Yes guys! Keep the other horror sequel reviews coming :) Really interesting and cool points addressed. Definitely check out III as it is just totally a different story and what I thought would have been a much better approach with the franchise as an anthology. Regarding the 2018 Halloween film, in my eyes I thought it was the best of the sequels as they actually tried something different and more interesting with the Michael Myers storyline, something to note though is that it follows as a direct sequel to the original and forgets about all the prior entries.
