Happy Halloween, Saurian fans! We have a special spooky surprise for you on this day, the scariest animal at Hell Creek… at least if you are a baby dinosaur. This video shows the creature from a human perspective in VR (HTC Vive).

Question to the mods: What's with Dakotaraptor stamina? Why not reduce its relative running speed since that, not stamina, is where dromaeosaurs fall short?
@poppyraima53427 жыл бұрын
There was a conversation about this earlier this week on the Discord. In case you didn't see it, basically _Dakotaraptor_ is in a situation where roughly half of its normal prey base is slow enough to catch fairly easily in a footrace but might fight back or have protection from massive adults (_Pachycephalosaurus_, the young of large herbivores like _Triceratops_ and _Anatosaurus_), and the other half can maintain high running speeds for longer than it can (the ornithomimid and _Anzu_), so it's circumstantially forced to be an ambush predator. The way _Saurian_ comes up with running speeds is just by making the models run as fast as they physically can (taking into account the various physiological constraints) and then working down from that to get more average speeds. (The running animations are also vetted by biomechanics experts to ensure that they're reasonable.) When they did this with _Dakotaraptor_ -- which studies have indicated was better adapted for running than other similarly-sized dromaeosaurs like _Utahraptor_ -- they found that it could hit speeds nearly matching those of the fastest animals in the game (namely subadult _Tyrannosaurus_ and the ornithomimid, which hasn't been animated yet to my knowledge, but is probably the fastest animal in the game) but it was exerting itself a lot more than those animals. Mind you, we're talking speeds in the 30-35 mph range, if not up to 40 mph for the ornithomimid. Of course, _Dakotaraptor_ could probably maintain a decent 'jogging' speed, but there's no sense in trying to jog after prey that can keep up a pace twice as fast as yours for just as long.
@bkjeong43027 жыл бұрын
But then at least this should be clarified on the site itself, so people don't think it was limited in terms of capabilities, as the site implies heavily. It outright says Dakotaraptor is incapable of running long distances, not that it did not because there wasn't much point. Also: " the other half can maintain high running speeds for longer than it can" I can easily see the "higher running speed" part, but find the "longer than it can" part to be skeptical. We have actual papers on dromaeosaur long-distance running speed, and they rival that of wolverines or wolves, both of which can keep going for miles.
@poppyraima53427 жыл бұрын
+Bk Jeong From the gameplay description on the _Saurian_ website: "A sturdy ambush predator, [_Dakotaraptor_] is capable of intense bursts of speed but unable to sustain them for long. This gives it the perfect set of skills to burst from the foliage and mow down unsuspecting prey." It doesn't necessarily say that _Dakotaraptor_ is incapable of running long distances, though I can see how people might misinterpret that. As aforementioned, they just mean that the animal couldn't maintain the 30+ mph speeds needed to keep up with the faster, more cursorial species in its prey base. As far as modern predators that run their prey into the ground, the only examples I can think of (and I'm assuming you're alluding to) are canids like wolves and African painted dogs, as well as spotted hyenas. There are a couple of problems with this analogy: 1) The aforementioned mammals pursue their prey primarily on open ground in part because of the fairly unimpeded line of sight. This doesn't work as well in a forested area like Hell Creek. Even though there were open clearings, the majority of terrestrial environments were woodlands with plenty of trees and other natural features that made it easy to lose sight of prey if they got too far away. This is why painted dogs prefer not to hunt in woodlands, at least not using this method. 2) This method of hunting is primarily used against animals that the predators can keep pace with. The goal therein isn't necessarily to tire out the prey such that it cannot run anymore, but rather so that it will be too tired to fight back once the predators actually move in for the kill. In the case of _Dakotaraptor_, this method could hypothetically work against most of its prey items, but there isn't too much of a need to prevent an ornithomimid from fighting back, since there's not much it could do when it comes to a physical encounter with a _Dakotaraptor_. 3) The animals that employ this hunting method are all cooperative pack hunters, which ensures that at least one member of the group is able to continually put pressure on the quarry, as well as having other members around to box it in by positioning themselves to cut off various escape routes. Based on what we know of dromaeosaur behavior, this certainly doesn't seem to be the case. The idea of dromaeosaurs living like pack-hunting wolves is a bit of an outdated trope at this point; indeed, the original _Deinonychus_ aggregations around _Tenontosaurus_ remains seem to be more indicative of vulture/Komodo dragon-like feeding behavior, where you get an entire group of animals congregating to scavenging off a kill made by maybe only one or two individuals, and smaller ones end up getting maimed or killed and eaten themselves if they try to interrupt the size-based pecking order. While not impossible for _Dakotaraptor_ to gang up on a larger prey item (something they're planned to do on occasion in-game), this isn't really strategized cooperative behavior, but more like _Hey, that guy over there is attacking that young_ Triceratops, _let me get in on this action so I can eat first before the rest of the crowd shows up!_ Furthermore, regarding wolverines: they're ambush predators. While they are long-range foragers that can keep up quick paces for miles, when it comes time to actually kick into high gear, it's the same situation as _Dakotaraptor_ in that they can get to about 30 mph for short bursts before tiring. I haven't been able to find a version of the paper you're referencing that I can access, but based on studies of wolves and what else I can find on online sources, they can maintain speeds in the 5-10 mph range for a while, which is fast relative to a human runner and is probably where _Dakotaraptor_ was in terms of a 'jogging' foraging speed, but you're not going to catch a healthy ornithomimid by moving at that pace. All this said, nothing about _Saurian_'s depiction of _Dakotaraptor_ hunting behavior seems out of line with the available fossil evidence and inferences from ecologically similar and/or related taxa.
@bkjeong43027 жыл бұрын
I was actually thinking about wolverines and other mustelids, also endurance hunters. And on the dromaeosaur social behaviour thing: While I do not believe dromaeosaurs lived in permanent packs, crocodilians are known to hunt not as a mob, but as an actual, if temporary, pack where the attack is organized and coordinated.
@bkjeong43027 жыл бұрын
And the bit "unable to sustain them for long" from the gameplay description is exactly what my issues are- that doesn't really fit with the trackway data from Xing et al, 2013 or other trackway studies, which show dromaeosaurs moving at around 4 miles per hour for hours on end when not hunting. I don't see why Dakotaraptor shouldn't be able to keep up a 30+ mph speed for around half an hour, even if it's not as fast as an ornithomimid is.
