I personally really liked this plot twist! To me, this was one of the most tension rising scenes in this whole movie. And I actually was scared of Sartain popping up wearing the mask. Where every perfect moment, including the ending of their previous entries, was stupidly retconed just because the writers don't have enough creativity to write at the least, a decent aftermath. Halloween Kills felt like it was just filler in order to make a trilogy and also increase the body count and they made Michael even more powerful and supernatural than he was in the Thorn Storyline, despite that the directors wanted to make him "realistic", whatever the hell they meant. Hopefully, Ends will be written a proper story in order to properly end this.

That was a good twist. I did not see this coming when I first saw Halloween (2018). Dr. Sartain was a far superior secondary antagonist than what we got in Halloween Ends (2022). He actually has clear motives and is consistent in writing. Plus, him being Dr. Loomis' student makes him more compelling. Corey Cunningham in Ends is a cartoon in comparison.

People hated this scene which is understandable. On the surface having another person suddenly start killing people would take the spotlight away from Myers. However Myers was never just an ordinary slasher villain. He was a pioneer of the Slasher Genre true and many slashers take inspiration for him. But because he was the first and the world he was in had no rules in horror movie, the movie world's rules could have been subject to change. But for a more practical explanation it's summed down to two reasoning. 1. Sartain was one of the few who tried his hardest to understand Myers. Much like Loomis. However unlike Loomis who gave up and wanted him dead, Sartain refused to give up believing there was more too Myers than just the actions he's committed. As a scientist he doesn't believe in pure evil even though his mentor another scientist does. So naturally any attempts to understand and not draw conclusions would drive him insane. 2. Myers was established as purely and simply evil. We don't know what kind of evil he is. Or what the game plan is for it. But we do know for certain that said Evil can corrupt and infect those too weak to resist it. Loomis was able to resist it, because he was a doctor in all sense of the word. While it would have been a violation of his oath to kill Myers, he like most doctors would come to the conclusion regarding needs of the many. (Ya I made a Star Trek reference, but Myers is wearing a Captain Kirk mask.), whereas Sartain is a different can of worms. His intentions started out as noble at first, but then the evil slowly began to infect him. Made him crazy. And when he made his first kill, he enjoyed it and understood completely what it felt like to do so. Which didn't give him a complete understanding of Myers, but a semblance of understanding why Myers would enjoy killing. Because it felt right to him.

I like the Dr. Sartain character and wished they had saved him for the sequel. I think he was motivated by wanting to understand Michael from a clinical and mental health perspective. But besides that, Sartain was extremely protective of Michael to the point of killing several people to save his life. Michael is a world famous serial killer and after Loomis dies Sartain became his primary physician, his legal guardian, and power of attorney. I think Sartain hoped Michael wouldn’t attack him after setting him free but naturally it didn’t happen that way. It adds a new layer to Michael that he would end the life of the man who knew him for 25 years and, unlike Loomis, showed him compassion.

@@codymays9943 The problem with keeping Sartain around for the sequel is that, if they turned his obsession into an arc, half the audience would want what he wanted. To understand Myers to his fullest. Whereas the way they seem to be going is that from the 1978 movie to this movie, we begin to slowly understand bits and pieces of Myers little by little. We don't understand why, but we slowly understand pieces that offer vital clues to understanding him. Such as his ability to speak. While that was glossed over in the first movie, it became a heavy subject in this movie. Then you have the moment with Sartain understanding what it feels like to be a killer and enjoying it. Which in turn helps us understand Myers more. Because Sartain enjoyed his first kill and is presumably corrupted by the same evil that Myers embraces; we understand part of the evil that influences Myers allows him to enjoy the acts he's committed. Almost like Evil is Myers' drug and the worse he does, the higher he gets.

Shanethefilmmaker Those are points well taken. I just think Sartain was underutilized in this film and could have figured greatly in the sequel’s story.

@@codymays9943 He made mention that he was Loomis' student when he first started out. And in this movie he's at the age where he could have had his own students. Maybe like him, there's one that was just as obsessed with understanding Myers. And with Myers on the loose still and them introducing generations for both the Strode family and Lonnie's family, we may have another potential villain wanting to finish what Sartain started.
