Absolutely! I think he needs to add the organ music to all the episodes from this time forward, though.

Thank you for choosing a folk tale for Halloween rather than a true crime case and also for choosing to add to the gravitas of the analysis with the sound effects! If you ever feel it's a topic you can say something meaningful on, I would love for you to cover a brief history of psychiatric asylums as they modernised, I feel like they have become spooky places that people without direct experience often misunderstand. Also, the idea of cave dwellers having lots of kids and eating the locals appears in Icelandic myths of Grylla. I suspect this story originated further north!
@gerarddearie-zd2gb8 ай бұрын
Not a folk tale. as such. There is some belief in Scotland that there is some basis to the idea of a family of brigands murdering travellers and hiding out in caves, not necessarily the whole incest and cannibal stuff. Once you get out of the central area of Scotland it is pretty deserted, even today.

Being so focused on the third verse of that song and how to sing...so much so that you nearly miss what its about...and then being bummed out about it because it was a fun song and inc*st isn't cool...relatable content right there

Fab stuff! The bad smell bit reminded me of an experiment which might interest you, where disgusting conditions like bad smell and other stimulants were introduced into the room where subjects were asked to make moral judgements about different scenerarios. And the results were unconsciously affected - it suggests the disgust response to something like a bad smell can unconsciously increase our disgust at immoral behaviour. Humans be odd.

This was so much fun, plus as a Scot, I grew up being regaled with this tale and warnings to come straight home lest I run into what my mum called The Hills Have Eyes weirdos. A+ on your pronunciation of Scottish places. (Although your singing was distinctively Irish 🤣) “naebody” is pronounced nayb-dee too, ha ha.

It just gets better Andrew! Music, 'Cave dwelling cannibals,' Prion Disease, 'beasts in the filed' and a host of good reasons to cooperate with one another for the wellness of all. My understanding is that a gene mutation has been discovered (Mead?) in some populations that protects against kuru, perhaps indicating wide spread incidents of cannibalism among our ancestors. Our choices in shaping a 'functional civilisation' is a profoundly relevant contemporary question, thanks for mentioning it!

I think you’ve missed your calling of singing old Scottish, mythical, tabloid reported, songs with obscure organ accompaniment. I felt like I was in a Scottish version of “the pirates of the Caribbean” (pun not intended) 😂 Thank you! I did not know I needed that today.

My favorite video of yours, still is the one that explains why we are fascinated by True Crime.... It was hillarioys in a laugh-at-yourself type of way. Your love of human nature is obvious. It reminds me of Dr Oz. He has a special interest in humans as well. You both truly enjoy studying humans.

My sister in law’s father died of prion disease. Doctors thought maybe it was from eating wild game, specifically deer (he was an avid deer hunter and always ate what he killed). I will never eat deer again as long as I live. I always get a lil dopamine rush when I see you have a new video out. Your insight is so interesting!
@Justine-ut8ho3 ай бұрын
There is a prion based disease in deer in the US right now. And hunters aren’t being educated about what prions are or how cooking will not kill them. I have relatives that eat deer and they believe that if the deer doesn’t look sick then it can’t be infected with the wasting disease. I wouldn’t risk it. Ever.

your eewwww at the incestuous "seed" line in the ballad 👌😆 I'm something of a connoisseur of personal affect 🤔 not in a demeaning way but like I have a deep abiding love for the animating spirit of meaning within my sensitive attunement to personally expressive energy ☺️ I just love how that moment unfolded, despite the unfortunate topic lol we were on a mini psychospiritual rollercoaster together for the briefest of seconds ❣️ I like your low key creativity with the video format variety that is developing ☺️ I hope we get another taste of folkloric intrigue if you are ever so inspired again.

This was interesting and fun. This also helps explain why one has a very visceral reaction to the Orgs in Tolkien's Lord of the Rings. Putting a fallen fellow soldier in the pot for dinner just sounds sickening, but also, just looking at one's peers as food seems barbaric.

Yay, I’m Scottish and we learned about this in primary school and this year Sawney Bean featured in my visit to the Edinburgh dungeon. Great fun. Is it well known in the US? That was Scot’s dialect not Gaelic. As a child I was told they ate English soldiers and a quick google tells me the English occupied that part of Scotland in the mid 1500s so I suspect the story was created to scare the English
