Kinesiotaping for Hallux Rigidus, Hallux Limitus, Bunion Pain, and Turf Toe is demonstrated. The goal is limit dorsiflexion of the big toe joint (first metatarsal phalangeal joint). This is a self taping technique.

You NEVER take of the Paper fully as it stops working, the edges need to be cut round to make it stick better and there shouldn't be any creases or folds within the tape

Thanks! This is the best method on KZbin for Hallux Limitus. All the turf toe taping methods are way too extreme, and use way too much tape.

What is the point of this taping? The toe already doesn't move?
@drblakeshealingsole2 ай бұрын
You must find an activity that may force the toe to move more than the limited Range of Motion and use it then. Patients with hallux limitis or rigidus do not have the range of motion to run normally in general, so the tape prevents the bending while allowing you to run for example. Each patient is different. so is this to mean that restricting movement is the best course of action (as opposed to exercise) for sever big toe arthritus?

Is it ok to use a cotton ball in between the toes in order to prevent the friction and tension of tape and the webbing between the big toe and the next toe over?

Hallux limitus/rigidus is a bony limitation in extension of the hallux, correct? I'm confused, why you would further limit extension?

Because when the joint flexes, the bone spurs push on each other its really painful. so you want to slightly limit the joint movement.

Do you ever recommend the Cheilectomy? Or just conservative approach and change your lifestyle even if you were pursuing professional level dancing/performing/theater?

@@wrxbungle Did you find the bone spurs started to come back?
@wrxbungle4 жыл бұрын
@@RS54321 while I haven't had any follow up imaging, I still have adequate range of motion and no pain on the top of the joint or in the extensor tendon. I do have some decreased sensation in that area (a known risk and not uncommon for sensory nerves to be affected) as well as a callus on the ball of my foot that I need to manage otherwise I can get some sesamoid bone pain from time to time but other than that, no issues!

Hi Dana, i'm a dancer. Bare feet was ok but i was not able to dance in any shoes, too painful. So i think you get to a point where you know you have to do something or stop dancing. The thing is if you have the bone spurs coming they are not reversible, so surgery is the only way. Best!

I am curious if you can see this taping treatment as a way to restrict ROM for those with hallux rigidus + bone spurs in activities such as running (and other exercises that cause joint flexion)? I have been using a rigid foot plate for my hallux rigidus that was diagnosed about 6 months ago, but I believe it's throwing off my gait / causing further injury to my arch/heel/ankle. I am curious if you think taping could be an effective replacement treatment protocol for this condition... longterm! :) Thank you for this video, Dr. Blake! There isn't much info out there about using taping for hallux rigidus, so I would appreciate your thoughts!

I use arch support and has helped tons, since in my case one of the reasons I got it was because of excessive arch and narrow feet,so more pressure on the toe and other foot areas. With arch support the weight spreads more evenly on the whole foot
