I seriously want to drive to you and hug you. This issue has been immensely effected most of my year and has put me on the cusp of losing my mind. I am a strength and conditioning coach and I have been dealing with this for over 6 months now IN BOTH FEET, predominantly in my right. I got misdiagnosed multiple times by doctors claiming it was most likely turf toe with no mention of Hallux. They wanted me to wear a boot for a couple of weeks, I wasn't see much improvement and as soon as I took the boot off it was like nothing had changed. I started taking matters into my own hands and got a pair of motion control New Balance shoes, ordered steel orthotics online, and tried a turf toe taping method. While doing my own research I started thinking it was Hallux Limitus, after playing around with taping methods I found relief when I had the toe pulling slightly outwards away from the other toes. This video just pulls everything together, all the other videos, podcasts, etc and never went beyond isolating the big toe joint and the flexor hallucis. I love you.

This is the most informative explanation I’ve heard and seen. My left great toe was immobile and I had joint replacement. I’ve stopped wearing heels, and most flats if the toe box is narrow. Now my right great toe is limited. I even have sharp pain while I’m laying down, and walking is torture at times. I’m trying to learn as much as I can to reverse or at least minimize the progression. I do not want and cannot afford surgery. Thank you for this.

@@hqef616 I address it in several ways. Choose footwear that have a larger toe box, have good support throughout and heels no larger than 1”. I try to massage my legs and feet at least every other day. I do feet exercises every morning and night. I try to get up and walk or stretch every hour and while I am sitting I spread my toes and rotate my ankles. And I’m working on including more anti-inflammatory foods in my diet and avoid foods that are not freshly made. It’s a lot of work for me, but if I’ll be able to avoid surgery or further deterioration, it will be worth it!

This information helped so much that you can't imagine. For many months I wasted my time stretching my big toe back as if I had buniion. The reason I thought I had a bunion is because my big toe has a big bone on the side. I used to wear narrow shoes all my life eventhough I have wide flat feet. Then my big toe shifted to the smaller fingers -developing bone groth on the side of my toe. I developed swelling under the big toe. Now, because of this information I wear toe seperators and insoles and I already felt the deference. Thank you so much for the help!

I'm a very active person and have been suffering from a series of foot problems over the past year that have kept me from running - what started out as IT band syndrome, turned to very painful sesamoiditis, which numbed out into hallux limitus that keeps me from running, lunging, etc. Although I've seen several physiotherapists they haven't been able to correct my foot alignment. +Felix Bc YES. The first time I tried running in them I cried my eyes out because it was the first time I had run pain free in over a year. They are amazing. I wear them every time I work out and my feet just feel more aligned and bending the toes back doesn't hurt in the same way. The problem isn't entirely gone but I don't wear them 24/7. I think full healing would still require intensive physio, stretching, and wearing these 24/7. But I completely recommend. These are a miracle.

Ivan Minjares It’s gotten so much better in time! I can now go on runs, lunge etc without pain. The flexibility still isn’t there and I have tightness but it’s improved! It just takes time! I’ll never wear high heels or shoes with pointy toes but whatever. Mobility is the most important thing!

This is the best video I’ve seen about this. Everything you said, I have. I have toe spreaders and wear no rise, foot shaped shoes, or I go barefoot. Thank you for those exercises and treatment options. I’m going to start them and see if my feet improve (I have halix limitus and my toes are in constant pain. I do some stretches) It’s good to know the massage and stretches I’ve been doing hasn’t hurt my feet on any way.

Hello doctor thanks for this informative video. I wear correct toes and have a mortons nerouma in left foot according to podiatrist i saw after he did a click test. My toes are still squeeze together if i take off my correct toes on my left foot. I have been wesring them for months. Question is can the foot confrom back to being spread out like my right one and toes spread out over a period of time? Can we reverse the toes getting bunched together and they spread out on their own naturally? I do physical therapy at home and wear correct toes and altra shoes. Any feedback would be great. I cant run anymore but i want to grt greater foot health back and have to a degree. 65 degree motion what does that mean in terms of big toe? Up and down or side to side? My left foot is not in great shape bc all tge toes squeeze towards one another.

Hai, I'm Kezia from Indonesia!! So glad I found correct toes in time. I have a little bunions on my both feet, and I am determined to get my toes fix. I've already bought correct toes through your correct toes online about 3 days ago, but they said it's still on the way here so I have to wait. I've watch many videos online about fixing a bunions. Some other video said that we also need to get rid of a connecting tissues that holding our feet position with it's bunions. So the first step to do is to make that connecting tissue gone, so that the hallux or the big toe joint (not sure) can move now. And only after that we can start repositioning the metatarsal with the joint and also with the hole toes (toes alligment). Can you please give me any clue about that information? I mean,I'm confuse. Shoul I do that releasing connecting tissue with pencil technique that I watch online? Or just do the bunion stretch everydayp plus using the correct toes? Because I'm concerned and worried if I might do this with wrong steps or do this in an ineffective way. Thank you so much, hoping for your response!!!

In another video you mention it is not hereditary, yet my brother and mother both have bunions, along with myself. I’ve had it since I can remember, definitely since 5 years of age. I had surgery around that time to implant a STA-PEG (subtalar arthrorisis implant), and therefore was under the care of a podiatrist since before that time, who explained that our bunions were inherited (hence why we all had it). Mine does not cause pain and I still have full range of motion and flexibility. I also have extremely flat feet, however was quite active in running without much negative affect.

Factors like tissue laxity and elasticity, or generally how mobile joints are and how quickly and strongly they can recover from a malposition is hereditary, but ultimately some force needs to push the big toe towards the other toes for it to dislocate and form a bunion. This may be the case for people who are pretty flexible and hyper-mobile, with flat feet, which is also an indicator of a relatively higher tissue laxity and lower tissue elasticity. Children often as young as age 1 are put into shoes that are too small and tight and narrow in the toe box, which unfortunately makes changes to a child's foot, especially if that child is more vulnerable due to their tissue makeup. Sounds like the STA-PEG worked out well for you, happy to hear that you are pain-free with full range of motion and flexibility!

Will your Correct Toes toe spacer resolve this or some additional surgical intervention involved? How long would it take?

@@chino1127 It's different for everyone and depends on multiple factors. Bunions are definitely one of the conditions that Correct Toes is most successful with. However, I will say that people with goals related to reducing pain and increasing mobility are often reach their goals quicker than those with goals related to cosmetics and aesthetics. Wearing shoes with a wide enough toe box at the ends of the toes will be important in allowing your toes to splay wide. From there it becomes a point of strengthening intrinsic foot muscles. Also a bunion reduces the support your foot arch has, causing your foot to roll inwards, flattening the arch. A big toe splayed wide provides a good anchor for the arch and prevents the foot from rolling inwards.

I was diagnosed with stage 2 Hallux Rigidus 8 years ago on both feet. I was told I would need kelation(sp) surgery for both feet. I had surgery on my right foot at that time. In the months that followed the surgery, my Dr. told me that that I really didn't get back the mobility in my right big toe that he had hoped for. I decided not to have the surgery on my left foot as the right one was not very successful. In the years that followed, my pain level was usually not too severe, except for an occasional flair up in one foot or the other I otherwise didn't notice a difference in pain from left to right. Over this past summer I moved close to the beach. I started to do more barefoot walking on the beach (for about an hour at a time 4 or 5 days a week). After a couple of months I started having severe pain in my left big toe joint. This has eased somewhat, but comes back if I walk any more than about a 1/4 of a mile. I'm 60 years old and love to walk. I don't want to become sedentary. I also have a job that requires me to stand. Do you think I should have the surgery on my left foot at this point? If so, could you please refer me to a good surgeon in the Atlantic City NJ area?

This all makes sense! I finally saw a podiatrist yesterday after years of great toe joint pain. I had a trauma to that toe in my 20's (a few decades ago)that has caused arthritis. I have some movement but not much and the pain is getting unbearable. I do also have that bone growth on that top of the joint as well as cartilage loss, pitting, and bone growth. My concern is the future. I am only 41 and very active! If I use Correct Toes (and proper footwear) and the great toe and sesamoid bones correct themselves some, will this stop the progression of the arthritis that is happening? Also, I have been wearing flip flops because it is one of the few shoes that does not hurt my foot. The podiatrist says that is the worst choice because it is allowing me to roll to the outside of my foot. Would you agree?

Is there any way to straighten the DIP (where the toenail is)? Not only is my great toe angled laterally, my toenail is further angled laterally...which is what I think has lead to my hallux rigidus. My whole gait has been off for as long as I can remember and now I have painful hallux rigidus (cartilage loss and bone spurs). I am very despondent about this as my podiatrist basically said I need a cheilectomy and perhaps other surgery down the road, which I don't want.

Hi Dr,I have Hallux valgus and1st metatarsal cystic degeneration and sesamoid adema.2) head of second metatarsal Friebergs infraction.3)3rd TMT joint degeneration. This is the left foot.The right foot has mild TMT joint arthritis degeneration cyst.A bone island is seen at the head of 1st metatarsal...Dr,both of my upper soles and big toes where they meet tend to burn or sting.I have been to 7 drs.Five podiatrists,orthopedic drs,endocrinologist to check blood sugar.neurologist for nerve damage.Everything came out fine!Some podiatrist s said the Mri with the above results are nothing and others say it could be something?I am left with no answers. Again when walking the toes and upper soles I get a burn like it's my skin.? Oh ya,went to a skin dr and she said maybe neuropathy. Along with other drs.I am totally lost?I live in Boston, not sure where you are located. You would think a place like Boston could figure this out.Any advice would be huge.I am turning 59 next month and a former college hockey player and I keep myself in shape..and have had this for 6 months.Its getting very depressing limping around or on the sofa,( the only place I go for pain to subside.I never had foot problems in my life.sorry for the long rant..Thank you very much in advance

Dear Dr., I wear Correct Toes, however, they push into the skin of my big toe. My toes get red and irritated. One toe got an ingrown toenail. I have the smallest size. What is a good way to protect the skin on the toe. I’m having big difficulty with my sesamoids on one of my big toes. It has a mild bunion, but I’ve been discouraged from having a bunionectomy. I do have fat pad atrophy, so I have been offered orthotics with a reverse Morton’s pad (soft), with instructions to remove it if the pain gets worse. I still have mobility in my big toe. The IP joint is getting sore. I wish I lived near you. How many people tell you that? Thanks for any advice you can provide.

I went to the doctors because I thought I had gout! That was two years ago I was told I had arthritis. I noticed the bunions and this shape of my foot especially on my right side. After listening to this video I'm convinced I have bunions. Not arthritis. I have recently moved to Ecuador and will look into having my bunions taken care of by a Doctor Who doesn't want to operate on them.

I believe I have this problem with my right toe. It still bends upwards fine, but after doing something like lunges, I feel pain under the joint of that toe while walking. and even while doing lunges, I know my right toe can't bend as my left toe. should i actually try not to bend it upward too much and try to spare it? I believe the joint where that toe joins the foot is a bit bigger on top than the left foot joint.

You can do modified lunges if it's painful and incorporate foot specific exercise to mobilize and stretch the foot. Both will help with strengthening as well.

I have plain in my r great toe which has just become constant and is interfering with the quality of my life. Waiting for a referral to a podiatrist. And am concerned that the treatment offered will orthotics as you described. If it's a bone spur causing this pain it seems logical to have it removed and then continue the treatment you offer of natural footgear, correct toes, massage etc to prevent further damage. I have hallux limitus on my right foot. I'm a golfer, and in the golf swing, a RH golfer pushes off the right toes, bending them with considerable force. So obviously this is a problem for me. It's much worse when I walk and golf, because of the swings combined with walking up hills. I'm becoming quite conscious of my golf shoe choices, and will order your Correct Toe device. My question is, should I use a stiff insert in my golf shoe to keep the toe from bending too far? Or maybe tape the toe to accomplish the same thing? Are these good or bad ideas? Thank you!

Yeah , I too was seen and by two Doc's and both said surgery and one wanted to dig out the arthritis other wanted to insert a pin , so I'm seeking out ways to help relive pain myself . Thanks for posting this video , You explained more than these 3 minute Doctors did . Looking at this guys foot , he has more separation between his toes than me since I cant separate mine so I may have to get surgery but will try to do my best to manipulate and massage my foot to at least relive pain . Once this is started can it actually be stopped from progressing? I have signs of bone spurs but still have 60 degrees of flexibility. I cannot go to 90 degrees though. I only wear foot shaped shoes if not sandals now. I get aching though and pain at the end range of stretching. Does stretching and working the toe help or hurt it?

H! I have a confirmed by xray mild hallux limitux, and the xray showed bone spurs starting on the inner part of the joint and a narrowing of the cartilage in the joint. No mention of a shifted sessamoid bone though. I was offered a custom orthotic and told to wait till I need the surgery when it progresses to a bad case. Would the treatment you suggest in this video stop the progression? Why didn't you mention the bone spur part of the condition except the one on top of the joint? How can the treatment in this video address the spurs? thx

The article about hallux rigidus on your website says that conservative methods include wearing Correct Toes spacers and avoiding some exercises putting stress on MTP. You also suggest using flexible sport shoes. I didn't quite get if custom carbon inserts should be still worn together with Correct Toes. Could someone clarify on that?

Limitus I would appreciate very much if you could differentiate between a structural one (which occurs unloaded) and a functional (which you will only recognize while loading pressure on the big toe join). I do have a functional one due to lower big toe bones compared to the 1st Metatarsal. Sorry for my poor English - I hope you understand my problem. Maybe I will ask for an online appointment the next days. If I will do this please, please allow me to talk to Dr. Ray. Did you get a solution? Functional hallux limitus is often associated with a pronated foot type. You may benefit from orthoses if you haven't found a solution yet

@@gelidsoul We're not quite sure based on the information, but if movement is causing the joint pain please consider using a heating topical before manual movements to "warm up" the joint. Always speak with your provider to get the best care and avoid additional pains.

Do you have suggestions for correct toes approved soccer cleats? I believe my left foot is on the verge of hallux limitus as a result of wearing cleats 4/7 days. My other foot wear has nice round toe boxes though

Correct Toe approved soccer cleats unfortunately do not exist at the moment. The best option right now is to find something similar. Try the Altra King MT or the Vivobarefoot Primus Trail SG. They're still a far departure from a cleat, but they'll afford you some traction while letting you have a much wider toe box. We're still keeping an eye out for a healthy cleat however, so hopefully we'll be able to recommend one soon!

Going to get started with this video in the meantime - I have hallux valgus left big to Tailors bunion both feet and dropped metatarsal head right all causing me huge problems. Please reply to this post instead of to one below. I didn't realize that I was signed in under my wife Ginny's name. Thank you. I was diagnosed with stage 2 Hallux Rigidus 8 years ago on both feet. I was told I would need kelation(sp) surgery for both feet. I had surgery on my right foot at that time. In the months that followed the surgery, my Dr. told me that that I really didn't get back the mobility in my right big toe that he had hoped for. I decided not to have the surgery on my left foot as the right one was not very successful. In the years that followed, my pain level was usually not too severe, except for an occasional flair up in one foot or the other I otherwise didn't notice a difference in pain from left to right. Over this past summer I moved close to the beach. I started to do more barefoot walking on the beach (for about an hour at a time 4 or 5 days a week). After a couple of months I started having severe pain in my left big toe joint. This has eased somewhat, but comes back if I walk any more than about a 1/4 of a mile. I'm 60 years old and love to walk. I don't want to become sedentary. I also have a job that requires me to stand. Do you think I should have the surgery on my left foot at this point? If so, could you please refer me to a good surgeon in the Atlantic City NJ area?

i have mtp bone bruise with hallux limitus and a bunion that has developed as well as cartilage and bone loss at the same joint. i turned down a joint fusion. i still have a bit of mobility but the bone bruise hasn't healed in 2 years. chiropractor has adjusted my feet. i think i should do a stiffer shoe for exercise walking and employ these other stretches but any time I try to use a flexible shoe since it hasnt healed i get a lot of swelling and pain. am worried im damaging the joint further. they wanted to put me on gout meds but i'm pregnant and wont take that while pregnant. i am desperate to get the full range of motion back and be pain free. my only cardio right now is recumbent bike. it is very demoralizing. if i could use a stiffer shoe until it heals at least i would get more active which should help?

Then I have flat feet. I remember as a kid certain shoes I like but my feet would hurt . I'm not sure when I develop bunion on both feet. I then curl the toe down, and pop it by kicking a soft floor with that curled joint. It gives relief. Have you heard of this/is it ok to do????

Hi doc! Thank you for this great and infirmative video. I believe I have hallux Limitus on its initial phase (it bends almost like the other one) and no pain but wirh a small lump on top of the metatharso. I've been doing the streches speacially the ones with traction and I can feel a lot of popping and cartilage/tendons (?) moving on top. So I even massage this cartilage with my thumb. Is it okay to it to move my toe really hard or is it going to make it worst? (Of course with no pain!). Thank you very much!!

Hi Lisa- Correct Toes are not something you will have to wear forever. A general timeline is 1-3 years for lasting structural changes to occur, at which point you can decide whether or not you want to continue wearing CT. For individuals that have a leg length discrepancy we suggest using a full foot lift instead of orthotics or a heel lift.
