I remember my dad taking me to the midnight release of halo 2 at our local blockbuster. I got to skip school the following day since my parents were divorced at the time and it was “his week” to have me. Played through campaign and got to hit online as well. I’ll never forget those memories. He passed in 2018 and the blockbuster was replaced by a FedEx office store, I still drive by it daily and it’s a memory I’ll always remember.

Midnight releases aren't big or exciting anymore as the popularity of online shopping, digital releases and internet personalities that already upload gameplay and stream makes it so you can't really be surprised anymore. Back then there was internet usage but it was mostly articles and forums to discuss not like modern era where you can just watch others play the whole game ruining the experience. Online shopping was also not prevalent as like now. At most many just bought and sold on ebay. Meaning someone still had to go buy games from a store. Word of mouth was also huge back then but now company's just sponsor "gamers" to hype a game. Or before that it was gaming websites but even then it wasn't as bad as most journalists were pretty transparent. Sorry for the long post
