I think the turret should only be usable by a passenger, so it doesnt have to pitch downwards to aim at the ground, seems weird for the drop ship to “look” at you haha

Probably a lot better if it's used by the co-pilot but if there isn't one then let the pilot access it, that way you're not just a useless flying target when you fly it alone (not that you're really supposed to be a threat with those dinky cannons)

Why not have 2 different flight controlls one for hovering in place and the other to fly the ship around in its hovering state is when the pilot takes control of the turret(if co-pilot is with the pilot this options would be usable) that way if the drop ship needs to it can help clear a point but this also makes it a sitting duck if its piloted by one person? and maybe add the Halo CE three shot effect when this is in use so people know when to attack idk if its a good idea but would be neat imo

I've always thought that the Phantom should be more of a gunboat that carries soldiers, and the Spirit would be more of a heavy dropship (hence the large dedicated section in the middle for carrying stuff). The Phantom could carry like 40 soldiers, be loaded with cannons and turrets (the Halo 2 variants were just plasma avalanches), and carry 4 small vehicles like Ghosts or 2 medium vehicles like Specters or Prowlers. Carrying heavy vehicles like Wraiths and stuff should be reserved for a large ship like a Spirit, at the cost of only being able to carry about 14 soldiers.

Halo Wars 2 has a much better system for this. Ultra-heavy equipment like mining equipment/buildings are brought from the atmosphere by Liches, Vehicles/Heavy ordnance is brought by Spirits and Phantoms are used exclusively as troop transports.

Bungie replaced the Spirit because they regretted making it, they called it a tuning fork. They later established a canonical explanation, the Covenant phased them out after the events of Installation 04. Bungie may not have said why they brought it back for Reach, my best guess is they wanted to keep some consistency in the lore and for a bit of nostalgia.

Analyzing the two different designs, I'd say that the Phantom is more efficient and overall better for its purposes as a drop ship. Besides looking cooler, the only advantage the Spirit seems to have going for it is its modular design. Presumably it's easier to repair and customize.

@@WWLinkMasterX It also made for a unique gameplay scenario. Since they had to manually land and open their hatches, you could afford to rush in at an angle for CQC. Phantoms always stayed afloat and had more guns, so this was discouraged (side hatches weren't even in halo 2 for sniping, so you just had to wait for the grav lift to drop enemies and spam nades)

@@WWLinkMasterX imo yes, for the same reasons Hunters have their orange mid-riffs, Jackals have their shield gaps, Scarabs to have glowing selfdestruct buttons, etc. Weaknesses reinforce patterns, which give room to develop strategies. *That being said, Phantoms are incredibly fun to fight against vehicle vs vehicle for similar reasons. Destructible turrets and turbines, plus that beautiful explosion

The Spirit was also in Halo 5 and it has an even cooler door design. Also the elephant has the ability to make vehicles and weapons stick to it when on to move, maybe add something like that to some of the dropships so you can carry better.

The Phantom does serve a separate function, as you can receive briefs and such while in the Phantom, with Spirits on the other hand except for over the radio, not much can be done to communicate with others. So I'd go on to assume the spirit is more for bigger battles where you already received briefings and focusing on the deployment of troops. with everyone seated at the doors it can drop and leave much faster than the phantom does in actual use. While the Phantom on the other hand works for Ground Support (3 independent turrets instead of one) and more of the Special Ops type kind of assault we see in Halo 2 as the Arbiter also with quicker exfils due to the gravity lift. While the games don't really show this, having switched to the phantom entirely for Halo 2 and Halo 3. Modding tools would definitely be able to improve this aspect of it. Phantoms- Spec ops/Ground Support/Evac. Spirits - Rapid Mass Troop/Vehicle deployment.

Reach models + halo 3 textures has a LOT of potential. Reach has incredible fidelity but it ended up making some things just look sad. the halo reach pelican is the worst offender, what a massive downgrade even with the art style change taken into consideration

Nice thing about the covenant drop ships is that they use grav-lifts to pick up vehicles, so it look a lot more realistic if/when you implement that feature.

The spirit needs a function where it can carry and drop ghosts and wraiths as the drivers pleased. Also please add the three Burts to the spirit because it's basically the same as the other air so please add it so where you shoot three at once or shoots faster but weaker projectiles since it is you know an fast air craft troop transport.

Hey RejectedShotgun, I love your mods and I have a suggestion. Could you make a version of the Albatros that keeps the doors open during flight? People could put turrets into the bay and make it a mobile gun ship or flying base. like a flying elephant. If possible put the flag start and score position in it for CTF. and have it so you could fly the flag away or towards the enemies flag. and if shot down, it turns into a stationary position like the one in Sandtrap. it is just a suggestion. I love the amazing work you are doing and each one of your mods is fulfilling my childhood dreams.

I hope at some point the modding tools will allow you to modify how vehicles controls, assuming they don't already, the Phantom and Spirit would be so much better if they didn't have to face what they're shooting at, if it's already possible then I'd suggest making rotation of the ship locked to movement while the turret moves with the camera, kind of like how the wheels on Warthogs work now that I think about it, either way it's great getting to see things come to life.

I wasn't really paying attention when I started the video, just side-glancing to my second monitor, and in those first few seconds of looking over at it it just looked completely natural in halo 3. Yeah, the turret should be a gunner weapon. Having it at the back of the craft makes it really goofy to aim as the pilot.

Maybe this is just my own headcannon, but I feel as though the Spirit and the Phantom were never in the same realm of functionality. Sure, they both carry troops and vehicles but they act more like the differences between APCs and IFVs. The Phantoms were meant to be more like IFVs, they can get troops into battle with the idea of "there's going to be significant resistance on landing" hence they had more weapons and (although never really shown in game) better armor. Whereas the Spirits were meant to be more like APCs, they're meant to get troops in as soon and as quickly as possible. Spirits had a cannon, but it was meant more so for surpressing fire while they offload troops. As such, they were more focused on speed so their armor was weaker than a Phantom. My only proof for this comes from the games (most of my Halo experience comes from the Bungie era so Imma use them) they're shown in; The Spirit show up in Reach and CE- Where speed and overwhelming the UNSC's Defenses was the goal and the resistance encountered by the Convenant was expected to either be low (CE) OR so high that Phantoms would get destroyed just as much (Reach). Phantoms show up in Halo 2 / 3 / ODST - Where speed and overwhelming the UNSC wasn't the goal. In Halo 2/ODST, Regret didn't mean to assault Earth, he knew it was a human world (I think?) with an artifact, so he took the stronger Phantoms to help shore up the small fleet he gathered. In Halo 3, Truth went with Phantoms as the UNSC defenses were pretty much breached already, so rushing their defenses wasn't important, and the resistance left was strong enough that Spirits would be easy prey, as two Hornets could move circles around a Spirit before it could really do anything. With all of that said, and I don't know if this was already done in the mod so I'm hella sorry if so, but maybe make the Spirits signifcantly faster than the Phantoms while also making the Spirits weapon and armor weaker?

In all the Halo games the Spirit was featured in (except Halo Wars), we never really got to see what happens or what it looks like when it's destroyed because we could never really destroy it because it was for some reason made indestructible except for the turret at the bottom. So I think adding a "death animation" would be really cool.

Digging that yellow glow on the friendly Spirit, the shade of green could be closer to the Phantom's but still looks great in Halo 3's lighting. That iridescent shine on covenant vehicles as you say gives a more "alien" look than the dull matt finish in Reach. Gameplay wise they do need something to differentiate them from Phantoms (burst-fire turret, maybe vehicle deployment). Missed seeing those double-barrelled shotguns flying around in the Halo skyline.

Shi Kai wang stated that they created a new covenant dropship because the Spirit wasn't flexible enough, The phantom has two ways to deploy (and pick up) its troops to improve the encounters; the cobra like design serves as a way to protect the belly cargo.

2:06 i had a dream years ago that i was in halo 3 like it was like VR but i was actually in the game. It looked exactly like this map with the sand walls up super high. There was all sorts of vehicles ive never seen, and MILLIONS of covenant in a base that we were attacking with crazy vehicles that arent even in halo. The base looked like a super sized Valhalla tower with a halo 4 art style. The sand walls went around the base and it was shaped like a cul-de-sac with the towers interior inside of the massive sand walls, like a cave. There were millions of UNSC and Covenant fighting on top of the sand walls on each side and inside the base. Seeing this map which i believe is one of your sandbox modded maps absolutely blows my mind and i get crazy Deja Vu to the point where im questioning if my dream was a future reality lmao XD

I have an idea for the spirit that might or might not work in the halo 3 engine. You remember the hover lock for the falcons in Reach? Imagine lowering a dropship like the spirit or phantom to be low enough to dispatch troops, press a button so that your altitude and position are locked so you can't move while the troops are piling out. I imagine that once you press the position lock button, the camera switches to have a better aim for the main turret to provide better 360° ground cover without having your vision blocked by the ship itself. Of course, troops should still be able to pile out without this feature in a pinch if fast deployment is needed.

I think the camera is a bit too close, but I'm nitpicking. This is freaking amazing! And yes, I agree: the Spirit is a much better design for a drop-ship. It looks functional and militaristic, specifically made to get troops on the ground fast. The Phantom looks awesome too, but it feels more like a traditional ship. More like a Pelican equivalent, and I guess that's exactly what Bungie went for in H/3.

I really hope they make a Halo game with elements of Halo Wars and regular Halo and you control a fight for your Covenant/Banished/Swords of Sanghelios/Covenant Remnants/UNSC/ONI by controlling a strategy and then hopping in as an Elite member of that faction. Sure, I see something like that being a bit more strategy and cover based, maybe a cool ability to go 3rd person and definitely removed from the more traditional Halo experience so far.

I think to differentiate the two, the Spirit should be more of a high-speed heavy lifter with cut down seating capacity (those two prongs being like giant hover engines that could suspend a vehicle below it) and only one gun, while the Phantom gets to be full of friendly troops with several guns that can be used by them. Maybe even different Phantom variants with different gun types (like how Reach has two different Falcons) such as fast spraying anti-infantry and slower-shooting fuel rods, or something like that.

You should modify the Phantom to be a true gunship vs just a drop ship like the Spirit (to help differentiate them in your giant Forge battles). To do this, you could mod in two additional belly turrets on the Phantom like shown in Halo 2 (and keep the side gun turrets). A “second” driver could then operate all three turrets on the belly.

O:55 they switched to the phantom due to performance. The spirit had a shit ton of seats so all the extra geometry was inefficient for a flying vehicle where you wouldnt see the seats for a majority of the time. The phantom fixed that. In reach they brought it back cause of the new hardware and upgraded game engine

Hey RS, killing it with these mods! Whats the possibility that eventually you’ll be able to import Halo Reach dialogue into Halo 3? Hearing Marines react to an incoming Spirit would be a really cool detail, and I distinctly remember lines from Reach Marines whenever Spirits would glide by.

Sound modding is the only thing that's not possible with the tools right now, but an update has been confirmed to add it later on. Once that happens it should be totally possible.

@@RejectedShotgun that’s good to hear. In this case, my mates and I agree that the Spirit import looks so much like a Halo 3 vanilla asset, and adding in accompanying relevant lines would just add to that so much more. Again, keep up the good work man!

Halo 5 Covenant Spirit just looks more like a heavy drop ship with heavy gunfire. But instead just a upgraded Spirit dropship.

I think the Halo 1 turret is the most logical. The point of the gun is to suppress the enemy while the infantry bailed out and having 3 guns does that so much better than 1 gun.

the spirit could be tuned to be a lighter vehicle than the phantom. it has the same vehicle and troop capacity, but is faster and less armed

I think the Spirits should utilize the same turrets from their Phantom counterparts. HR had the two dropships sharing the same turret and I believe so did H4. However, if u leave it just the way it is with the HR variant, u can easily make 2 more variants utilizing the H3 Phantom turrets. One for the Covies and the other for Separatists. Different weapons = different variants of the same dropship type. By doing this, u can easily expand the vehicle sandbox and continue experimenting with other possible variants. I know this is easier said than done, I'm not a modder.
