This really feels like a bygone era, where a franchise releasing a banger was practically expected. Maybe it's the rose-tinted goggles of my childhood, but having Halo 1-3 release with what felt like the end of the story, then having 3 spin-off games release that expanded the lore (outside of the books) and gave us unique gameplay between all 3 spin-offs? It never felt like anything bad could happen. Meanwhile, Gears of War also had nothing but bangers in its first trilogy, then Judgement, which i thought was a lot of fun and, again, expanded the lore and everything. God of War too. All these games releasing in the 00s were just... AWESOME. And then the 10s happened and every game started being a gamble, online communities shrunk, physical presentations became false promises. I miss the era when it felt like companies understood that having a great relationship eith the fans was what MADE MONEY, rather than just believing we would lap up everything with a recognisable brand name on it.

Microsoft wanted a small DLC sized Halo 3 expansion (even got the copywrite of the word Recon, Halo 3: Recon) and then Microsoft came in, and were like "damn, this is a entire game, not a DLC? Shit, nice job" and then Bungie looked stupid as they realised the game wasn't worth $60 but they really wanted out of the contract by 2010. Eg, that's why they also released Reach beta and 3's map pack with ODST. I can give the source for this btw, they said this themselves. Marty O’Donnell "That’s where ODST came up. It started as Halo 3 Recon. It wasn’t going to feature Master Chief, and it’d be a short story, just an expansion pack. You know, some new multiplayer maps and a whole bunch of things that had been scattered through the entire series, all in one package. That would fulfill our contract with Microsoft. It would come out followed by Halo 4-or rather Reach, as it proved to be-a year or a year and a half later." The article is a good read. Also, the idea's and development for ODST is a good read for sake of entertainment, they were def passionate about it. You see these cutscenes? One guy did them. The team was so small because it was a B team, (left overs) and also Bungie gave payouts depending on the project so therefore nobody wanted to work on ODST because less pay. Sad really, ODST is easily the second best Halo game, and Reach is easily one of the worst.

Monkey was a easter egg. Since this was built off of Halo 3, they reused the assets from there including the monkey family easter eggs on the first level. It's not canon, just a little goofing off, like having Chief's cryo pod in the hangar at the end of Halo Reach. Regret showing up is basically the culmination of the parallels to Dante's Inferno taken to the conclusion. Throughout the entire game Rookie and the rest of the team descend through parallels to the different rings of Hell as described in that story. It all leads to coming across the Devil himself, in this case Truth. In-universe it is Truth confirming the existence of the Ark Portal that we see in Halo 3.

It takes place a month after the events of ODST, so the cutscene had to take place just right before Halo 3 and by then Johnson was back from the ring
