It is war, after all. The amount of deaths the player goes through in the campaign are an example of how difficult it really would be to stay alive in that situation. In lore Chief basically goes thru on heroic and first try gets through the game even with all the BS like rocket flood or jackal snipes.

She's not dead, she's MIA floating in deep space under stasis. Due to time dilation she has been missing for 60 years earth time but has only aged a few years her time. A salvage crew accidentally found her ship with her inside and brought her to a medical station for treatment. Upon waking up she was approached by a representative for the Misriah Armory, he had some questions about the 343 Guilty Spark mission. He notified her that a terraforming colony has gone dark after reporting creatures similar to the flood and they would like her to run a secure and rescue mission with some marines to try and save some of the inhabitants and research team, if any are alive. It's Aliens I know, but she'd be a great Ripley.

It's been decades since I first saw these cutscenes when I was in high school. It still feels powerful and I appreciate the attention to detail Bungie put into the dialog. Cortana says 'say again' rather than 'repeat' which I hear in so many movies and TV shows, it irritates me. You never say 'repeat' on military radios unless guiding artillery bombardments. You always use the phrase 'say again' because it could confuse artillery crews into firing another salvo erroneously. They really did make a masterpiece.

If anything that defeats the whole purpose of voice acting, you spoon. By your logic, Lord Hood should be American and not English and Chips Dubbo should be from New Zealand, not Australia. It's not like black or white voice types are exclusive to their races anyway. White people can have voices typical to black people and vice versa.
