343 Guilty Spark: “…but you already knew that, I mean, how couldn’t you? We have followed outbreak procedure to the latter, you were with me each step of the way as we managed this crisis. Why would you hesitate to do what you have already done? Last time you asked me; if it were my choice, would I do it? Having had considerable time to ponder your query, my answer has still not changed. There is no choice. We must activate the ring…” This dialogue in addition to many other subtle lines by delivered to spark throughout the game, as well as the fact that chief/humans are referred to as RECLAIMER , is clear evidence that bungie originally considered humans to be forerunner. Sad that 343i gutted this incredibly intriguing story with the introduction of the forerunner book series as well as Halo 4.

@@jimtaylor527 you must be referring to the developer commentary of Halo Ce where joe, Marty, and others suggested Cortana would go crazy with power after having been inserted into Halos control room. “Whatever happened to that story?” I believe is what Marty says in response to Joe or someone when this was brought up, that is because they did not follow through with that idea. On the contrary, you will find Mr Martin O’Donnel yelling at people on twitter to this day, explaining that the forerunners were in fact decendents of ancient humans. One was an idea prior to the development of the game, one was an idea that was written into all 3 original trilogy games as well as reach kind of and all Bungie era halo books. So ya I can mention one with the other, whatever that even means.

I am sick to death of people blaming 343 for this. Dude, you realise it was bungie that cut out the whole plot point about the arbiter finding an actual forerunner grave in Halo 2 which would have finally been concrete proof for him that the prophets were lying, because in the storyboards that were released it was clearly a human skeleton that the arbiter found. They also retconned it proper in Halo 3s development and a lot of the stuff in the books and expanded lore proves this as well. Halo 4 and the forerunner trilogy was 343 picking up were bungie left off. So yeah, it was bungie that got rid of this 10x better idea, not 343. So blame Bungie.

They intended for Forerunners to derive from ancient humans by Halo 3. It's stated a few times in-game that the precursors uplifted Forerunners genetically. It hasn't changed since then.

I love how “why would you hesitate to do what you have already done?” Has a double meaning in this context. One in relation to the lore foreshadowing human forerunners and one in relation to the central thematic dichotomy of the franchise, the pure scientific utilitarianism of Spark and the Forerunners contrasted with the religious zealotry of the covenant, particularly Tartarus and how he and Spark both want the same thing polar opposite reasons. In Spark’s AI conception he is literally incapable of coming to grips with how the chief could turn his back on protocol when it’s already 9/10ths of the way to completion. A good showcase of how artificial “intelligence” will never be anything more than an array of limited and predetermined logical pathways, not truly innovative or autonomous in abstract thought. I get chills at 2:58 every time when the ominous OST rises and Spark reveals his true priority in an equally nonchalant and bewildered tone, showing that in his programming there is simply cause and effect, action and reaction.

2:30 That moment when John turns to the Monitor, he finally realises what he could have done if he activated the Index into Halo's firing mechanism that would have killed billions of innocent sentient lives (humans, alien races, animals). It was a good thing Cortana stayed in the control room to warn him after he received the Index from The Library the previous mission before Two Betrayals started. As soon as John turns to Guilty Spark, he just looked so bitterly angry and disturbed behind that helmet because he knew he could made the biggest mistake of his life not knowing that what Spark told him was nothing but lies. Such an iconic but yet a scary OMG moment in the saga's history.

But Spark didn’t lie, from his perspective John is a forerunner who has come to reactivate the Halo Array once more due to the Flood outbreak ithey are currently in. Hence why Spark specifically says; “Why would you hesitate to do what you’ve already done?”. This cutscene is filled with subtext that makes it one of the best cutscenes in Halo CE.

While a few of the writers at 343 didnt like Halo's original story, there's also the fact that due to being a subsidiary of a larger company a ton of people had to put their hands all over every part of the game. You see it all the time with AAA projects ever since "AAA" actually became a thing, especially if the game isn't "story driven" (aka, if its an fps) , especially if it's not a japanese studio based around "individual" directorial visions. The moment you have moneymen fucking with a story, if they don't think its profitable or if it'll be confusing for people who just want to shoot things (which, considering infinite's main multiplayer battlepass advertising, is obviously how they view it) they will change the writing team to better suit the "goals of the company". So, yeah, the writing team of 343 IS sculpted by people who hate Halo's story- it's hard to convince producers your wack-ass story isn't going to alienate your playerbase when you have proof that it doesn't (see: destiny under activision literally having to put the story in an external website), what do you think they're going to say when you've never written anything and youre just a shell company made exclusively to swindle a smaller company into completely selling its IP.

I so wish they'd stuck with humans being Forerunners. It's so much more thematically important to the Covenant war, justifies the Reclaimer term, makes Guilty Spark and Gravemind's dialogue actually meaningful. The Didact would have been much more interesting too. Instead of a generic space racist, he could've been a ruthless warrior dedicated to stopping the Flood by composing most of humanity against their will, a genuine foil to Chief's battle-hardened badassery and iron determination.
