I hope 343 can add the “instantaneous acceleration” tag to projectiles. A ton of issues would be fixed with this in mind. Gravity hammer worked by creating a damage volume in front of the player with a high instantaneous acceleration variable to knock everything back. The sniper had a high value too, this is noticeable when a headshot causes the ragdoll to push the head back to do a backflip.
@alobowithadhd61912 жыл бұрын
The tag in question was added to a ton of elements in the Blam engine. It does exactly what it says. An invisible sphere would spawn inside exploding vehicles. Things clipping with this sphere (the debris, dead driver, dropped weapons, etc) would be launched away from the sphere by adding velocity to everything according to the instantaneous acceleration tag. All damage effects have at least a tiny bit of IA. This is why shooting things in the Blam engine always responded with it moving.

Agreed. The CE grenade explosions are still my favourite; the bass whoompf, the pillar of smoke, the settling dirt with associated sounds audible if you listened closely (the fact they actually did goddamn damage to an enemy when you threw one at them certainly helped). The wraith cannon shot used to look like it was torn straight out of Verhoven's Starship Troopers, the roiling ball of plasma ready to incinerate whatever it touched, slowly over the following games the plasma effect (in general) changed from 'white hot flame' to 'ball of electricity or whatever' and that always saddened me. The Banished wraith shot is just pitiful, embarassed is the right word.

The electric aftermath never bothered me but the one thing I loved most about covenant vehicles is they had sounds like their name sake. The whaling sound of a banshee, the ghastly sound of a wraith mortar, the wurrring of a ghost. The ghost naming was because of the sounds of the gases and plasma they used in them. It sounded alien. Now it's pew pew stuff. Kinda lame. If they wanted to revamp the sound of the banished to sound banished make it metallic. Make it brutal. Make it war like. Now it's just bland to me.

I agree, I feel like this issue plays into the gameplay of halo infinite and a core problem I personally have with multiplayer.. the grenades. They’re so lifeless that when you see one explode near you it doesn’t communicate the radius or impact of that explosion and so it leads to grenades feeling inconsistent, I swear I’ve died so many times to a grenade that didn’t look near me or even explode near me but I take damage. It’s a huge design oversight and is a serious issue
@stoicavo65332 жыл бұрын
Came here to express the same issue. I have problems with nades to the point where I'm actually surprised when I kill someone with em. I've spammed enemies with popped shields in confined spaces and they still come out unscathed while other explosions that seem so far away seem to deal a lot of damage. Half the time you don't even see or hear the explosion that kills you. Your body just suddenly goes flying with zero warning with the grenade icon popping up next to your name on the kill feed. It's kind of jarring and disruptive. Same with rockets. The explosive damage radius just feels real inconsistent overall

One of my biggest issues with the turning red before blowing up mechanic is that some challenges require you to destroy an enemy vehicle. Ok no biggie, but when you have a thing that tells you when your vehicle is done, it makes the challenge a whole lot harder. Doesn't help when slow reloading weapons like the skewer allow for your enemy to escape. I remember having a challenge to destroy 3 warthogs. It’s not just explosions to be honest. Nearly all effects are massively downgraded and it’s almost certainly because of performance related reasons. Blood, sparks, fire, energy weapon particles etc. are all reduced to practically nothing. I’d like to see then given more oomph again like we’ve had in previous games but it depends on just how badly the games other areas of performance would suffer. Personally i’m perfectly fine with these elements being reduced if it means the games other, more important, technical elements are buttery smooth and impressive. But only 343 could really know how significant an effect it would have on performance. I’d like if they told us more precisely what the issue is and why they purposely keep the effects down.

I think its not a performance issue, I think its a lack of art direction. Vehicle combat in this game is just broken. My biggest problem is the gunner seat on the warthog or any turret. In the bungie halos, they really did a good job if conveying heavy damage to a vehicle. For a warthog, the glass would crack, fenders would get bent or break off, axles would get mangled, leading to off-kilter wheels, hub caps fly off, metal gets shredded, bent, or blown off. Smoke, and then fire would start billowing out, until the vehicle would explode with blinding spectacle, leaving behind a skeleton and chunks of smoking charred vehicle. Infinite has about a third of what I just described, which is why they feel so plain. You only have one or two queues to determine the health of your vehicle. Either light sparks/smoke or a tire getting shot off. Its still often surprised me when my warthog suddenly starts glowing red, as it would still look pristine. This game has been so refreshing, I didn’t like the design and art style of Halo 4 & 5 but Halo infinite nailed the art style and my only complaint was exactly that, the explosion, it feels so incredibly cheap takes me out of the immersion completely. Both titanfall 1 and 2 have really solid explosions, but I think they communicate damage states perfectly through art. When a titan gets doomed, segments of the titan begin to erupt in fire and go black, revealing the titans insides. You get the sense that the damage the titan sustained has made it unstable and at any moment can collapse. Eventually the whole titan goes to a burnt black, and the pilot either can either eject with a pretty lame explosion (unless you have nuclear eject on) or burn down with the mech as it succumbs to its wounds.

One explosion that’s great in this game is in the first mission, as the ship is exploding you walk into a long hallway just as something behind some enemies and boxes explodes, throwing all the boxes down the hallway. I love watching the physics engine in motion, and that moment was a perfect example of that! I wish similar design was implemented for vehicle damage, I love halo 2’s vehicles because you watch as they fall apart as they’re shot, all the little bits of debris bouncing off in every direction.

The 343 explosions certainly do give off the impression of a toy breaking apart, and not how it once was with the vehicle tearing itself apart on the Inside with each combustion as you stated. A few issues i'd like to share regarding Infinite's campaign: -Vehicles have the durability of cardboard - banshees and wasps in particular. I'd find myself loading up a Razorback with marines only to have it explode after a few plasma rounds. -The game looks very good, but not great when compared to other "open-world" games. The art style is on point, but could have looked better graphically (draw distance, long range textures of the hexagonal structures look off, etc) - No weather patterns to make it feel more alive (Witcher 3 did this amazingly on last gen consoles). The day-night cycle is more akin to a day-evening cycle. Just remember CE's Truth and Reconciliation - a level completely at night on a Halo ring. There's no reason not to have a proper day-night cycle, specially with tech we have today. - The Banished, while varied and quite fun to fight, were poorly introduced. I knew who Atriox and the Banished were thanks to Halo Wars 2, but one should not have to go outside the main Halo saga and access 3rd party media in order to understand what's going on and who the players are. Halo 5 was the worst offender. For someone who only plays the Halo FPS games, this aspect is confusing. Halo 1, 2 and 3 could be played back-to-back and there would be little (if any) doubts as to who, what, when and where.

Every coating would be a bundle of textures as opposed to just one single texture I could be wrong tho, since we have skins in Halo 3.

it might be a good idea for them to look into dynamically generating textures, then like, applying a scorch layer and such real-time on a given skin, and then working with that. they could even do it in a shader to save on VRAM. it'd definitely be a bit tricky, but it would be worth it. the final effect would look really cool, seeing vehicle skins in charred, burnt forms

And then Banished Wraiths have a fast and red projectile that makes you think you can endure it like a cheap Revenant shot and then it turns out it blows up into a huge splash of hot plasma that'll seriously fuck you up. Honestly left me flabbergasted in my burning Scorpion that one shot slimed me so hard I'm about to explode.

The thing that hurts most about this is it will never change. The devs arent putting their heart and soul into it because the corporate side of game dev has gotten so much more important than the art that they aim for good enough and leave it at that. The devs clearly put their heart and soul into infinite. It was just forced to release too early. Read about how some 2/3 of the content was ripped from the game due to being unfinished. The lackluster phantom explosion is obviously not the ideal they were striving for. Also, you don't need an entire dev team to work on updating a cosmetic store.
@VapaFish2 жыл бұрын
Please do not call the Devs on this. I can promise you that if a dev is working on a game they do care about it. The trouble comes from budget, timeframes, decisions from leadership & various other outside factors. Take for example the banished monoliths. Clearly there was something there right? We have assets, we have them spawning in the wild & they have a specific set of enemies around them. The Devs would t have just left that in and forgot to remove it, but rather they likely didn't have time to finish, or where told to cut this area back but not given time to fully remove them.

As it continuously takes damage, parts of it break off as had always happened before in Halo but now unlike with the hornet which explodes in a fireball but is left mostly intact, the falcon starts to descend and a small explosion takes place in the engine immediately followed by a brilliant fireball that consumes the entire vehicle leaving behind a nearly unrecognizable husk. I agree. On the point of having satisfying presentation, I think something that Maximilion Dood has talked about in regards to fighting games is a great example of that. Some of the most fun with fighting games comes from the game making you feel powerful. Good animations, particle effects, screen shake (similar to your point in your video on turrets), debris. These seemingly small things are important to make you "feel" what you do in game. And on the scarab explosions, Bungie even knew how satisfying they are. I've always known the 343 games, despite looking good, lacked a certain kind of visual polish that the Bungie games did, even in Infinite which is the most graphically advanced Halo to date, but I could never pinpoint it. I think the underwhelming explosions certainly play a big role. It seems small, but I do think it's quite a severe problem that should be rectified, but because most people won't think it's a big deal I don't really have the belief that it will because not enough people will be clamoring for it. Explosions play a big role in making the gameplay look and feel satisfying and rewarding, and also conveys visually and audibly just how dangerous weapons are and the damage they cause. 343 needs to learn this and give every explosion in the game the same love as the explosions that they do nail, like the grunt methane tank and sentinel explosions. I could also rant on about the 343 audio team's overall insistence on making some of the vehicles and other things not sound like their original counterparts from the Bungie era games, but that's a topic for another video perhaps.
@alertArchitect2 жыл бұрын
Damn, seeing those side-by-side comparisons of the Halo 2 explosions and the Halo Infinite explosions really proves that 343 didn't just skimp on the visuals of the vehicles exploding, the audio is just... So weak, comparatively. The sound of the ghosts exploding before gave you this feeling of something was about to be violently ripped apart by the failure of its own component pieces, before suddenly this alien tech we don't fully understand gives this odd sound as it finally gives up and bursts. Meanwhile, the ghosts in Infinite just have the same sound as every other vehicle leading up to the explosion, a sound that feels like it came, unedited, from a sound library. As someone who gets immersed in media through sound more than just visuals, it just feels anemic.

I'm glad this is being addressed! I just think 343 is still not actually done. Just needs more polish I love the way in halo 2 how the sentinels burst into a ball of flame, fall to the ground and then explode even further, hurting you if you're not careful.

Nah they just suck and haven't got anything on Bungie Halo'. They delayed the game for a almost a while year, they've gotta be done lmao

I to have had the problem of thinking a destroyed Ghost was still operational, died on my legendary run because of it. What really hurts is the Phantom, which is the most neutered explosion in the game, actually has some decent damage effects when it takes some as shown off by Rejectedshotgun.

My friend and I were literally saying exactly what you said even before launch!!! it was like you were speaking directly from our hearts

Its not just the explosions in this game, it's also particle effects in general, they are incredibly underwhelming. It's pretty confusing that since 2001 they have always looked better than they have here.

The rocket launcher in DOOM ETERNAL has some very nice explosion animations and the firing sound of said rocket launcher is beefy

I was waiting for you to make a video about this. I knew from the first frag explosion I saw you were gunna hate it

Not exactly an explosion but instead really good combat detail in a game: FEAR's gunplay feels so visceral and punchy, with all the special visual effects when using the focus mechanic. The animations for the guns, environment and enemies also are great. Mowing down a psychically controlled soldier, with massive bursts of blood, smoke and sparks as your bullets rip right through them and ricochet off the concrete behind them, its soooo satisfying
