It’s a new Halo and that means there are a ton of new weapons that come bundled with their own set of beautiful animations. Why don’t we review every weapon animation available to us in the game for no other reason than fun? Yeah, I think we can do that.

I love the needler, my headcanon is that the Spartans have no idea how it really reloads but since they're so strong they just shake it and it reloads

That's pretty much how the canon is, hell even most of the Covenant/rest of the antagonist factions didn't know how it works. They just do stuff with it and it works.

Maybe im in the minority but I never liked what they did with needler designs (even in the remmakes) post halo 3. I don't know why but I like the smooth glass like crystals in Halo 1, 2, and 3 rather than bright pink rough-looking crystals.

My favorite animation in any Halo game has to be the brute shield from Halo 3. Mostly because of the trailer.

One detail I noticed about the pulse carbine and ravager that caught me by surprise was that they have an alternate melee animation when meleeing while venting the guns early. With the ravager your spartan rotates the gun with the bottom facing outward and quickly pushes it out, and with the pulse carbine your spartan quickly does a punch similar to the plasma pistol. Both of the animations look like unprofessional knee jerk reactions which fits how they are activated. I found these pretty cool and honestly it makes me want more guns to have "oh shit!" melee animations when reloading

I think it’d be awesome if you melee while reloading a pistol, your Spartan would punch with the fresh magazine still in their hand.

The third person animations are so crisp too, especially the skewer, long gone are the days of characters shifting their hands about, we see a full reload and it is glorious

They should make the reload animations for the elites when they come out to have a more experienced way of reloading their alien guns just like how Spartans reload UNSC weapons and vice versa when the elites use human weapons.

To, the second to last gun, I just realized the animation looks like the giant forerunner structures on the rings shooting that energy up into the sky. It's that but on a micro scale and turned into a gun. That is badass

I love the violet-ultraviolet tones of color the new forerunner weapons emit! It helps these weapons feel more distinct from the rest of the sci fi arsenal we have in infinite

@EasySneezy Yes, It's the big orange triangle sections that form a square shape on the gun. When each round fired, an orange triangle section dissappears.

Its design reminds me a lot of the sjogren shotgun. With how you pull the top half of the gun back along a rail

I feel like the Promethean design lives on in the reload animations of the Forerunner guns. They almost feel "alive" like all the animations of the Promethean weapons in 4/5. Always a fan of consolidation rather than complete deletion. Also, the Mangler just looks a gun Arnold Schwarzenegger would use in an 80s scifi action movie, I love it.

I really hope that when we inevitably get playable elites, the reload and vent animations will be just like the spartan’s, except mirrored. The way they handle the Banished weapons should invoke confidence and dexterity, while handling of human and Forerunner weapons should come off as amateurish

They should probably handle the forerunner weapons slightly better than humans considering a lot of their tech is based off of Forerunner technology, but still amateurish enough that it shows these are weapons from a far more advanced civilization that they don’t understand.

After studying animation, the battle rifle’s “choppy” animation look like keyframes. Keyframes are the important positions of an animation that then has in-between animations put between them to smooth it out. Hopefully they smooth it out before the final release!

at first I thought that the choppy animation was 343i trying to give the BR a 'classic' feel, ala Doom reloads in modern games, but this makes much more sense. Thanks!

All animations consist of less ore more keyframes. Anything between those is just the value interpolated between the previous and the next keyframe. What it looks like is just two keyframes too close to each other, making the gun "twitch" to the next pose too fast

I feel like considering the spartans are so strong it would be effortless to have smooth human weapon reloads, also considering they probably practice more than most average human soldiers would irl, idk maybe that’s just my justification for it.

Really makes you feel like a super soldier. Since we are getting an evolving campaign in infinite I hope we get a certain mode where you play has a squad of soldiers where each respawn counts as one of ur soldiers dieing and in that you would be severely nerfed.

@@DEATHbySpNz well yeah you aren't supposed to move the armor yourself not even Spartans do that the armors controlled basically by their thoughts they want to do something the suit responds however they probably can move in the suit just not as effectively

@@justsomeguywithaplan971 right but its been shown before what happens when you put an unspartaned human in the suit, the thoughts of the person made the suit move faster and with force too strong to handle and broke the arm of the soldier..but that caused the soldier to have the natural reaction when extreme pain is involved.. his flight response kicked in and as that happened the suit reacted.. pretty sure every bone in that soldiers body was broken and insides crushed. Not a pretty sight xP.

In Halo Infinite, most Spartans are 4th generation, meaning they're soldiers that volunteered to be genetically and cyberneticaly enhanced, not trained from birth super soldiers like before.

Animations are pretty good,but they could be better. What need work is the melee animations and visual effects like explosions and fire- Pretty boring most of the time.

My favorite animation is the Heatwave's idle animation. First time I saw it I giggled like an idiot for five ish minutes. The hesitation, confusion, and concern the Spartan displays as this alien weapon does.... Something. Those tiny little details are what add so much character to a game, and it's something I dearly love to see

Cindershot feels so unsettling and it’s bringing a more terror-inducing adrenaline rush to me than a firefight in an FPS. And it’s great

Yes the commando definitely seems more like a Titanfall gun, but it’s a welcome addition thus far. Guess that makes sense considering the addition of a Titanfall-esque grappling hook too

What would you classify a “halo gun” as? When it comes to describing what a halo weapon feels like, people often fail at explaining themselves. Is it just a gun with an ammo counter screen? Or is it something more. When people deliver complaints about the commando and and bulldog not looking “halo” I think that’s just their nostalgia of the older games developing a preconceived perception of what is a halo armament to them.

Dude I love so may of these. The banished weapons are such a creative take on “covenant” weaponry, meanwhile the forerunner additions feel so classic halo when compared to what came before. I’m very excited

Yeah I really like the new alien additions, they're cool and fitting for Halo. Not a huge fan of the human stuff though, gives me more Titanfall vibes like he pointed out. It's not bad, just kinda outta place. Idk, it'll probably be a case of "I'll get used to it"

@@pluto3194 no you’re right it is definitely very Titanfall. As an avid Titanfall fan I am a bit biased towards it but to keep from being a hypocrite with other opinions I hold I do gotta maintain that it does look a bit out of place in halo. That said I feel like the human additions have done great so far in terms of performance and we’ll probably all collectively get used to them eventually. Hell if there’s anything to get used to in halo, Titanfall style weaponry wasn’t the worst thing possible though lol.

@@lebendigesgespenst7669 Do they though? Outside the commando and maybe the bulldog, none of the UNSC weapons really feel that titanfall to me. If anything a lot of the options like the BR and the launcher are far more reminiscent of their older designs than what halo 4-5 were going for

I love how the forerunner weapons seem perfect for fighting against the flood, since that's what they were originally purposed for. The Cindershot and Heatwave would be great for destroying groups of flood combat forms in close proximity and the Sentinel Beam would disintegrate infection forms crawling on the ground and walls.

I have a theory that Hyper, the animator for Titanfall 2 and MW2019, worked on Halo Infinite, especially due to the VK78. The Bolt Pull just bleeds Hyper's energy.

I really liked the forerunner weapons introduced in halo 4 namely the Binary rifle and the the Boltshot pistol. But man, these new forerunner weapons look infinitely better especially the heatwave.

The Banished Disruptor might vibrate because of the momentum created by the constant rotation of the reactor, the animation looks like the spartan is trying to keep the weapon stable

Quick note on the AR animation, it doesn’t look like the spartan is using a mag release but instead resting their thumb on the fire selector switch. The new design probably has a mag release on the other side of the weapon. It’s a very appreciated detail nonetheless, the previous games didn’t seem to have fire selector switches for the AR

The Mag release for the AR is actually ambidextrous, it’s the small black rectangular button to the foreword of the fire selector and trigger. It’s interesting that they both created the new design with fictional left-handers in mind, but that they also elected not to have the Spartan use the mag release on the visible side.

@@kabob0077 it definitely seems to be the case, it’s probably an ambidextrous mag release which is pretty neat in regard to the functionality of the weapon design

@@butters0074 If it is then what's that button by the mag well? Another magazine release? Either way, it's neat that the MA40 has an ambidextrous mag release. Also, I assume that the MA40 is also select fire (and configured for three round burst and full auto) based on the markings on the selector.

Some thoughts on the animations: 1- Its nice to see the Spartans finally practicing trigger discipline for all the weapons. I mean, they're super soldiers but they forgot the one important rule for handling firearms in previous games: keep the finger away from the trigger when reloading or not aiming at anything 1.5- The Commando rifle is inspired by the Titanfall guns. And the Titanfall guns magwell drew inspirations from the real life Kriss Vector. It still feels like a Halo gun though. 2- The Battle Rifle and Sniper Rifle are probably inspired by MW2019's jerky reloads. I feel that the Sniper Rifle's animation being more shaky rather than exaggerated is an evolution as it shows how experienced the Spartan is in handling such a heavy weapon 3- There is a slight delay when the Spartan removes the drum from the shotgun and inserting a new one. Almost as if its like a real gun and not a toy one. Still, I'd prefer that shotgun be semi automatic or fully automatic and we have the classic top feeding pump action M-series shotgun from the Bungie era as the second and more powerful UNSC shotgun in Infinite. 4- The Hydra's feeding mechanism may potentially jam due to its moving parts. There again its the future... but i'd still prefer it if it just pop up once and there's something inside to collect the rockets and place it in the internal magazine rather than it popping out every time you want to insert a rocket into the gun 5- Its nice to see the Needler's melee animation coming back. Still, it'd be great if there's an idle animation where the Spartan opens the gun and showing one huge crystal like the ammo pickup in previous games, showing that actually its one huge crystal separating itself into many small crystals when shaken. 6- I feel that the Pulse Rifle's vent should be higher a bit to prevent burning the user's hand, especially when Sanghelil's hands are larger than humans and are more likely to have their hands burnt than humans 7- The spartan closing back the Mangler's chamber instead of flicking it shows that even Spartans know that flicking a revolver's chamber back Hollywood style will damage the crane. A nice subtle touch. 8- The Shock Rifle's reload animation is, well, a little cumbersome for an interesting looking sci fi gun. I think it would be more interesting if the Spartan use his right hand to pull out the battery while he is holding the gun with his left hand and inserting the new battery with his right hand before smacking the battery and holding the trigger again. 9- I like how the Spartan use his dominant hand to cock the Skewer instead of tilting the gun to the left and using his left hand to pull that lever. It demonstrate how difficult it is to cock the gun 10- The Heatwave venting reminds me of the Suppressor closing reload animation from Halo 4 and 5 11- The Cindershot's firing animation is inspired by the real life Sjögren shotgun

maybe the sentinels had interchangeable attachments depending on what they were for? kinda like how the assault rifle in reach made the ammo counter look like it could be taken off and something else put on. maybe the sentinels had this too and that's why the sentinel beam doesn't look that damaged like it was ripped out of a sentinel and more like an unused attachment.

Rather than sentinel beams of the past, where you just rip a chunk of a sentinel and use that, the Infinite version feels more like a standalone version. Like this is what the raw beam mechanism looks like before the rest of the sentinel is built around it.

It’s funny you mention that the commando looks like a titanfall gun, it even has a super similar flick to eject the mag like the r-301 carbine. I really like it, plus if anyone has played apex legends or titanfall you can see they took some inspiration from halo. And I’m not just talking the fact they’re both futuristic shooters with a big space weapon as the focus of the story, I mean just look at the prowler pdw it’s basically looks like a shorter AR form halo.

I really like how the most comfortable your spartan is with the Banished weaponry is with the Mangler.. Much more confidence in how they operate the Mangler as it's one of the closest to human weapons..

Very small detail but I love how the character holds the Shock Rifle at a bit of an angle. Makes it appear as though its very big in the Spartans hands given that its designed for Brutes who are obviously much larger. Just something I thought was worth mentioning

I think the player just raises his thumb near the fire selecter on assault rifle reload for better flexibility. Not entirely sure but I think the mag release is the button above the mag well. Nice video as always.

I think I nice detail to add to the brute shock rifle would be that when you reload from empty, since all the power is gone, the crosshair on the little sight at the top of the gun dims and then blacks out as there is no power for it. Maybe showing that this weapon is haphazardly made, but still deadly

I like how the left hand at the end of the Needler reload is almost in a "WTF is this thing" pose. Adds to the strangeness of the weapon.

To be fair, with the assault rifle and any animation that didn't have any sort of friction can be brought down by one word: Superhuman. Remember that Spartans are canonicaly strong enough to lift and flip a warthog with little effort.

I think the best animation in all of Halo is the Halo Reach Magnum melee animation where the Spartan flicks the gun up to hit the enemy with the heavy part of the gun, and then flicks it back in the air to grab it in a comfortable firing position again.

Reload animations have always had such an impact on how much I enjoy a game that my friends will roll their eyes whenever I mention it. My favourite ever is probably the ACR from CoD: MW2. I feel that the Sidekick reload is a bit too quick, to the point where I can barely see the magazine being inserted. It almost looks like the Spartan briefly just lifts up the gun and hits it. I like how in the Combat Evolved Magnum you can see how long the magazine is and hear how it slides in. An animation that slow wouldn't make sense on the Sidekick since it's a smaller and faster weapon overall, but a little bit of magazine would be nice. And yeah the Commando is probably the best looking reload in this game.

The Ravager looks amazing. I'm glad they incorporated so many elements from their original vision of the banished. I hope with everything I've seen, Voridus and Pavium make an appearance this game.

I feel like the Gravity Hammer is supposed to have the neat gravity effects because I tried it out on Behemoth against the vehicles and they can kinda go flying after a hit.

I'm currently on the part where you're talking about the needler. I found the animation pretty interesting for reasons similar to the plasma pistol: unfamiliarity. While watching i was trying to think of what the animators seem to be trying to convey and I find it pretty funny and I dont think ill forget this now It seems like your spartan: runs out of ammo, decided to reload, pulls the weapon slightly closer to them as if to ensure they're clicking the right button, and then proceeding to hold it away from themselves in anticipation of the needles before being like "ok cool lets go" (or as if the shards come out *shink!* and your spartan is like "Ah! man, I never get used to it")

as a 3d artist getting ready to get a degree in arts, my god you are so on-point with the animation explanations, It's incredibly impressive, and makes the whole video that much better for me, when someone understands all these things about animation. keep doing these man, I'd love to see some Battlefield 2042 animations since I've got a friend who worked on a couple of the weapons, hopefully you'll be able to see which ones based on the little details :D

I remember back in H2 when you first pick up a sentinel beam thinking, what a true Forerunner weapon would look like, this is what I pictured, not the Promethean's weapons. I got this surreal feeling when I first saw the Heatwave. A long forgotten curiosity finally realized.

My only gripe with the animations of the weapons in general is that, to me, they look and feel too twitchy and fast even if we're talking about trained supersoldiers. I much prefer the original animation speed from the bungie games as it gave each and every reload a certain feel of weight and confidence that i feel has been lost since Halo 5, but other than that, I agree with everything you've presented in this video. You need to do this but in the passenger seats of the Warthog and Mongoose, as they actually affect the third person animations. Using the Skewer for example, in the passenger seat of a Mongoose, the spartan lays the weapon on their lap to reload it before shouldering it again. In the Warthog's side seat, the spartan tosses it up a bit, catches it sideways, and is actively leaning far back into the seat just to get the room they need to fit the weapon, reloading it before tossing it back up onto their shoulder. It's such a nice attention to detail.

A touch I love with a lot of the Banished weapons is their sheer size, like they were actually built for Brutes. They look large even in the hands of a 7 foot tall super soldier, and that feeling lends itself well to the power of these new weapons, engineered by brutes, for brutes, and without any governing body such as the covenant to hold them back or keep them in check.

I know the Sniper Rifle's animations seem plain, but I actually really like them. The fact that the rifle is more stiff conveys slightly more discipline from the Spartan using it, as if they are bracing it against their shoulder as well as holding with "one hand," as if to prop it up (and avoid letting the barrel drift just anywhere, at risk of flagging allies) even though it's so heavy. I also like how the smoke/muzzle flash is smaller than other games. IRL, the longer a barrel on a weapon, especially one with a muzzle brake, the smaller the actual blast will be. I think it should eject more smoke, especially sideways as that's the function of a muzzle brake, but not make a huge flash, because that is also the function of the muzzle brake (it pulls double duty: both concealing most of the muzzle flash so it's harder to spot you at long range and dispersing the energy outward to reduce recoil so your shoulder isn't so sore from firing a fucking saboted .50 caliber round. I also just love the UNSC weapon animations in Halo Infinite. They feel more tactical and practiced, like the Spartans exhibit lots of discipline, and also conveying that the weapons have smooth ergonomics and are easy to work with, which is equally important.

The halo combat evolved needler was the first animation I kind of fell in love with, I was very young when I first played halo CE(probably a little too young) and I didn’t notice stuff I do now but I definitely noticed the needler animations.

my favorite part about the needler is in the empty reload, the spartan tilts it as if they're trying to quickly figure out how to reload it before being jolted by the force of the needles coming out. love the needler in infinite so much solely because of the animations.
