alkali metals apear explode in water but realy split water into it's component elements and the heat from the reaction causes the mixture to react violently. it is fun to see when done safely.

Sodium is the metal you are referring to that explodes when it comes into contact with water. It actually doesn't explode, but convert into an extremely volatile gas.
@colio449812 жыл бұрын
yes and they react with water because they are trying to bind atoms together with the water creating a reaction of heat which turns into a explotion and i think that pure potasium is a alkaline metal

@Vladimoskov Actually, it's sodium that is the most reactive. While cesium explodes immediately on contact with water, sodium stores a hydrogen "blast" until it goes BOOM. According to Theodore Gray in his book The Elements, he had a contest against a special effects group in like Britain or something, and they tried to "improve" their cesium explosion using dynamite, while Gray managed to have an explosion of the same magnitude using only sodium.
@Entity-of-Justice12 жыл бұрын
Yes, the alkali metals are notorious for exploding upon contact with water, seeing as how they have 1 valence electron, so, when contacting water, they transfer electrons, giving off so much heat they explode, giving off a toxic fume.

@RebelAngel474 I've got a more simple answer: Water Tension. Beause water cannot be squeezed, and gravity pulling something down, the object is compressed. This could happen to the petrol tank and the amount of force causing the explosion. I don't know.

@JamieThePain No, it's just that it has a full outer shell of electrons. Sodium only has one atom in its outer shell, making it very reactive. Chlorine, however, has seven in its outer shell, one away from a full shell. So the sodium gives one atom to the Chlorine, giving them both full outer shells. That is why Sodium is reactive and Sodium Chloride is nonreactive.

@RebelAngel474 Want to know whats much more likely ? Spartans have explosives on them quite often, frag grenades, the Covenant Stickified Plasma grenades, rocket launchers... etc. So rather than the water having a chemical reaction with the vehicle, it could much more realistically be reacting with the Spartan's gear... either that or the force of a 1 ton man falling into water is enough to pin trigger his grenades and set them off on him.

@JackGambleIsHere13 жыл бұрын
@pancakezombie13 I agree, they may have an air tank, but with no visible space on noble six for an air tank, it's unlikely. I may just be thinking too realistically, but even if they do have an air tank, after the addition of water pressure, it would be near impossible for a spartan to move underwater. Also, they probably didn't want, for example red team, to walk all the way into the ocean and camp....Wouldn't really be fun.

Sodium doesn't explode in water, it gains energy from the water somehow, cause friction between the atoms which produces sparks which ignite anything flammable in the vicinity.
@6shelton6dude613 жыл бұрын
@GuitarHeroClub999 Yeah, they are poisonous to humans. Also no, you couldnt makesomething out of them, they would even react to air quickly and rust, therefore creating a sort of wall between itself and the air. Even when stored they have to be stored in oil because they would rust completely. Although if there was some way to make something out of them it would be extremely light.

Guys stop talking about the metal + water explosion, I'll explain it. All of the matals which can explode on contact with water are in the group 1 of the periodic table, named the alkali metals. They do so because they have a single electron in their outer shell, which the atom desperately wants to lose. So when it comes in contact with anything it can give the electron (in in this case the HO in the water) it reacts, sometimes explosively. The products are two things; an Alkali and Hydrogen.
