As a marine I've always thought it was cool when marines in halo said things that we say, like when the marines say "Oorah!" In response to Sgt Johnson. Halo felt like what the military would one day become. Halo 5 literally feels like power rangers. To me halo reach was the pinnacle of what the art design should be for halo. The Spartans looked like a special forces unit, they acted like a special forces unit. Don't get me wrong not all service members are stoic robots, most of us are actually like Buck. Which is why I loved him so much, he's even the coolest rank in the entire military, a Gunnery sergeant. Which anyone can tell you they tend to be experienced enough to be incredibly well respected yet still low enough in the chain of command to relate to the average marine. Really wish I could've just taken some 343 guys in to field with me and my unit so they could see how we act and the way we work.

Or the general foxhole banter. Like when the Scarab on metropolis is charging the marine line, blowing through a tank, a marine on a machine gun yells, in a joking yet serious manner, "You see this look? It's terror!" Or literally 5 seconds later from Sgt Banks: "That thing is really starting to PISS ME OFF!"

My late grandfather really appreciated Halo. He was a sergeant in the Marine Corps all throughout the Vietnam War. When I was young and would play the earlier Halo iterations my grandfather would stand behind me and I would ask him questions; "Papaw, is brigadier general a real rank?" "What does LZ mean?" He really liked watching me play the game and he respected how closely Halo stuck with modern military culture.

This entire video is yet another symptom of the underlying problem: of a company that does not understand and/or does not appreciate the original source material, and wants to completely change it for no good reason other than to call it their own. But the other problem is that these changes are all just rips from other successful games, instead of original ideas. Innovate, not imitate.

This is why I loved Reach's campaign the most. It felt like a huge planetary war was occurring. We played through the first three games hearing about Reach and how it was the biggest defeat in the Human-Covenant war and how it made heroes and legends. Each mission in Reach felt like an operation that real life military would do. Secure top secret information, send spec ops unit behind enemy lines for Intel, launch counter attack on covenant and destroy emplacements and infrastructure, take down enemy ship that supplies ground troops, help evacuate a city from attack etc. It felt real and that is what I miss about Halo. The feeling that this could be real.

During my first deployment to Iraq in '05 we were stationed at a FOB that was pretty barren. We use to squeeze 4 guys into a room together with 20 inch TV's so we could play 16 players. After each match we'd run outside and start talking shit to each other. Often times when we were out on watch duty or some other boring task we'd try and come up with new strategies. One thing we came up with on Halo 1 was to have someone stand on top of the banshee and have someone fly you over the base to capture the flag. Then your buddies would pull up in the warthog to race you back to the base. Several of the guys that played hadn't played Halo before then. Nearly all of them bought an xbox when they got home just to play Halo. But Halo has slowly been moving closer to what it is today since Reach. After Halo reach came out several of my friends hated all the new abilities like armor lock and jet packs. To them it didn't feel real any more. Their reasoning was that they couldn't relate to having those abilities. As to the art style, they took a huge leap back with the way the marines look. To address the Spartan's armor and color, after serving 12 years in an army that dressed it's soldiers in a grey camouflage pattern that didn't blend in with anything anywhere I can absolutely believe they would they would start using glow in the dark uniforms.
@Mortablunt7 жыл бұрын
Interesting. We Militsiya guys also liked Halo. Halo 3 and Halo Reach were our ambrosias of choice. We even came up with realistic game modes to help us practice and even develop new methods. That wasn't when we were just bullshitting around and having fun, being competitive knuckleheads or blowing off steam from training, patrols, meetings, and so on. Come to think of it, all the shooters we played back then were military shooters.

Halo 5 stands out as the only Halo game in which no hero dies. We see no scene of sacrifice or loss(que dramatic music) throughout the campaign. In the other games we had both Keyes, Johnson, Noble Team, ODST, and even Cortana died in the 4th. All main characters and for them to die made those games much more memorable and gave those characters meaning. In Halo 5 we are fighting a galactic scale war with several main characters and there was never a scene of loss. When Palmer's pelican went down in the end I was hoping she would crash and die, not because she's a bad character, but because that would have made her much more memorable. As a player I felt like all the characters in Halo 5 were always "safe" in too safe writing. For these reasons Halo Reach is my favorite campaign story , Jorge will forever be my favorite character, and his death my favorite scene. I can hardly remember all the names in Halo 5.

This video has described in detail a few of the faults of recent Halo games. There are many more faults and problems that were described in other videos in this and other channels. Fans are describing the problems and they are too many. These problems should not exist in Halo games, but they do, and is not 343 who is showing or acknowledging or correcting these problems, but the fans. 343 does not even know these and many other problems exist. In the meantime, they get rich with every Halo game because of the big community created over a decade. However, Halo games have been getting worse in many ways. Now, why the hell am I explaining this to a supposed fan? Don't you know the work fans have been doing? Don't you know what fans such as CMT and others have been developing and not 343? Don't you know it is the fans who even correct and provide solutions to problems in Halo 5?

Read almost every cannon novel (I'm not a big a novel reader so Halo lore is one of few exceptions I make and it takes me FOREVER to read them). I dig up and watch any and every lore based video, short film etc. Even my wife and daughter love watching all things Halo with me. The militaristic overtones, combined with the human elements and such wonderful authors (mostly) make for incredible in-universe drama... such that the universe of Halo has grown to be one of my most favorites of all time. For me personally it is slowly growing to be right up there with Star Wars the more I dig into the novels and backstories, human elements and even ancient Covenant lore. Halo CE lan parties back in the day were so epic that founding what went on to be a great 50+ member Halo 2 clan was a no brainer for me. Once I eventually burnt out on Halo multiplayer toward the end of Halo 3's life, picking up the games was still A MUST 'cause I HAD to get my story fix, I HAD to get caught up on what wasn't in novels yet and the games did it great justice. Halo 4 started veering off a bit but was still tolerable and I considered it very informative and character/story evolution was still happening in a manner that made sense in-universe... got a bit imaginative but the lore was heading that way a bit anyway, slowly and reasonably so but still heading in that direction. And then... Halo "5" happened. Yeah, I didn't even play it... refused to spend money on it. So many people worked so hard for so many years.and created so much unique, thoughtful content be it in music, film, novelization, games, all of it. Then it gets shit on so that this newest iteration can be so multiplayer focused that even the story gets shifted to fit the teen money-making machine. My heart aches inside. At least now the Optre mod for Arma 3 is super legit... talking about getting that militarized Halo feel, Optre's MY Halo 5. Here's holding out hope for what was, and could still be if course corrected soon, one of the best Sci-Fi IPs of all time.

@ryanborchert83896 жыл бұрын
yup. same for me. I have family members who were in the military. hell my great grandpa was a WWII veteran who fought in the battle of Normandy, and my mom's dad served in the national guard for 7 years. when I first started playing Halo, I grew a huge love for it. unfortunately Halo 4 and 5, in my mind, completely destroyed what felt like something that could actually be real some time in the distant future. the only reason I gave Halo 4 a pass was because A: I didn't have multiplayer, and B: other than the forerunner Didact part the story was somewhat immersive, at least where Cortana and Chief are concerned. to be honest, they should have ended Chief's story at 3 or 4, then do some form of spin off game instead of completely destroying the characters I loved, then replacing them with shitty, bland, cardboard cutouts (looking at you Locke and fireteam Osiris.) now don't even get me started on the armor designs and how ridiculous the art design is. I for one am disgusted to even see the Halo title on Halo 5. it was absolute garbage, from the ridiculous armor design, to the game mechanics and even the multiplayer. I've played Halo for years BECAUSE it felt militaristic, it felt semi realistic, and it wasn't over complicated and a cluster fuck of a game mechanics wise. I loved Halo because it was unique, while at the very same time very simplistic and complex at the same time, all while feeling like something that could be very real some years into our future. Halo 5 threw everything away that Halo was in turn for a teen cash grab system and slam dunking your way to victory like a god damn call of duty clone. it's absolutely unacceptable and I, for one, pray that 343 has FINALLY learned their mistakes and fix the train wreck they made. although in all honesty, I'm steering towards the fan developed projects like Installation 01 and Eldewrito. those games look promising enough and Eldewrito feels like a true halo game. (edit, I know that right now Eldewrito is in jeoporady, but when I made this post it was some time ago, before the whole shit show with microsoft began)

I can vouch for the Operation Trebuchet mod for ArmA 3, It's the only fun Halo experience I have had in recent years even tho it has no Covenant, but that's the charm I think, it's based before that war where you are fighting insurrectionist forces and ArmA 3's realistic sandbox makes it even better, there is even ODST's with drop pods! What i really want is New Mombasa and Covenant forces added so i can relive Halo 3 ODST in a more brutal way.

The best I have about stories is my father. He was in the military. In life, I've always felt bad for myself and I liked the Halo games to make me feel like a soldier--fighting all odds, paying respect to higher ups to work together to put my skillsets to use, and to feel like I've accomplished something great. The previous Halo games did so flawlessly, especially Reach. Everytime I want to stop and get a drink I see my credits rise and how closer I am to the next rank. I imagine all the people I have that I'm responsible for. I genuinely feel bad when I let my marines die, and it makes me almost want to do the mission over, to not let them die.

@halowatcher93918 жыл бұрын
I disagree. The Spartans are still the best of the best there is just more of them now. I like 343s transhumanist take of augmentations invented in the Spartan program becoming cheaper, mainstream, available to the public , and essentially the beginning of a new stage of human evolution.
@nutyyyy8 жыл бұрын
Agreed, it basically devalues the whole program in my opinion, the whole reason they went through with the Spartan 2 program was because Orion failed, they couldn't make Spartans from adult volunteers, so they had to take the drastic and morally dubious route of using children. Sure, you can implement a new program, a new Orion project, but the issue I have is, it's essentially started months after the end of the War, and there's really little indication that Humanity is reeling from absolutely pounding they received in the course of the war, more than half of the human population exterminated, countless planets destroyed, but nope, they can just magic a new Spartan program out of nowhere, but not in time to put them in the field during the war. Infinity feels the same, like it was conjured up out of nowhere, they even explain it was developed during the war, but they never used it.......
@halowatcher93918 жыл бұрын
I'm implying that as with any experimental military technology it eventually becomes easier to mass produce, and the technology spills over to the private sector and civilian life. Thats essentially a realistic progression of technology. That doesn't mean everyone is a spartan. Despite what this video says Latsky isn't a Spartan, but he has augments that benefitted from technology invented in the Spartan 2 program. I don't really get the carmine clone comparison. If you think Osiris and all of blue team had no personality that is fine, but theres no reason it had to be that way. You can have multiple spartans on screen with unique armor and personalities. Its very clear that transhumanist philosophy is a core tenant of the reclaimer trilogy. Its evoked in the prologue to Halo 4, and throughout that game, variously throughout the Forerunner saga, and its evoked again by Cortana in Halo 5. This is very clearly the direction that they are going, and although I have problems with Halo 5s story that is not one of them.

Its been more about the concepts than the "military" feel The lesser humans that are bound together by their bond and code, their strong faith in their species and fellow soldiers... ..and then a foe that is the embodiment of "religion gone wrong." An enemy force that is so delusional and radical they arent even realizing how much destruction they've caused.... Halo is about brothers in arms VS radicalism... Soldiers standing tall VS Priests damning everyone to hell for being different... that theme has been broken. the UNSC is now VASTLY more powerful than even the covenant and are creeping up on the forerunners in Technological prowess and YES fuck Rolan.. i hate him and his stupid aviator outfit and "generic white man" voice... everyone sounds the exact same

One thing I loved about Halo was the idea that you are fighting a war, but you're on the losing side; and what you do when you're on the losing side. It really made you empathise and sympathise with all of the characters/ Spartans, especially in Halo 2, 3 and Reach. So far in 343 era the UNSC are the predominant force in the galaxy, the Prometheans don't seem to be posing humanity any real threat, we've literally stomped the life out of the remainders of the Covenant, and the Spartan IVs mostly come off as entitled teenagers that haven't seen or done shit. My only hope is that 343 are doing this on purpose: to flip the chessboard upside down in Halo 6 in a really cool "tables have turned" kind of way. The false sense of confidence that Infinity and crew have felt so far is stripped away and now the Spartan IVs now have to truly put themselves on the front lines to defend humanity against the Flood, Prometheans, Banished or whoever it may be.

"We Wanna be like the "cool" kids!" - 343i Mission statement. I remember talking with one of the sergeants of my old infantry unit on Halo, mentioned he was part of an Elite Clan, still kept the name as well. Apparently they kick a lot of ass, so I missed out on that fun, but we went over all the crazy matches and games we've had on Halo, especially of 3 and Reach. Though it was a bit refreshing that I wasn't the only one in the Army that liked playing as the Covies. That aside, 343i has taken it to a level of cringe that I'm surprised anyone can even pick apart now. Halo 4 really lost my respect with Palmer, and Captain Dorrito, and so on. Hell the worst offender was freaking Majestic Team, those guys pissed me off to no end, especially how they carried themselves out in the field. Halo 4 in general did not give that atmosphere of desperation, even in the final levels. Spartans now feel like freaking Power Rangers the way they go on about it, and the Actual Power Rangers feel more structured! Considering how everything has gone thus far with H4 and H5, I feel Halo 6 WILL BE the last Halo if 343i keeps its BS up.

One of the things that made the Spartans so compelling was that they were so few and yet had this almost mythical reputation. They had the kind of awe inspiring presence that made the common soldier feel like nothing can stop them. Now the Spartans are a dime a dozen, they talk and act just like regular troops but with a few more cool toys. I would have much preferred to see Chief and his old team pulling off some god tier epicness rather than the cheap knockoffs.

Details that you mentioned in the video are what is lost whenever you have the changing of the guard when it comes to business and gaming. The leads at Bungie had the true inspiration for the game. When you lose that inspiration and vision you lose track of the essences of the purpose of the product. 343 is still trying to find their own identity with the Halo franchise and I just hope they find it sooner than later.

I was bare-boing it in the military as I only made it to week three of Basic (I was honourably/medically discharged because of my legs being so messed up prior). As all cadet experiences go, I of course got stories, perhaps marginal or iffy, but I have had personal ties with the military. My folks go way back into the military as well. Halo has always appealed to me because of my personal - direct/indirect background. There is one thing I would like to discuss--something that always irked me about Halo 4 and 5; I can't stand how rank meant absolutely nothing, like insignia was an empty patch worn just because someone felt like it that day. Rank carries weight. It carries experiences that don't need to be extrapolated, but are assumed or indicative to their position. A Five Star General? An ultimate strategist's insignia only awarded during wartime, experience, wisdom, and wealth. It is regarded a cherry fucking honour to be ranked as such. Warrant Officers? Enlisted personnel of their respected branch that /EXCEL/ at their craft and can opt to become officers if so they choose. Command Sergeant Majors are pretty much enlisted Commanders from what I remember, but with the position to speak frankly with the Generals. They too are a highly regarded rank (or what equivalent fro the Army).

So much in this is just plain wrong. Almost every statement is made from ignorance. This kind of "criticism" does a disservice to Halo because it misses the mark on why Halo 5: Guardians was less than satisfactory in many areas and implies Halo should undo all the growth it has undergone and return to a time of immaturity, plot holes, flat characters, etc. No, thank you. 343 Industries is light-years ahead of Bungie when it comes to storytelling, characters, etc. It is wrong to hold Halo 5: Guardians up as the example of "how Halo is now". Halo 5: Guardians had major issues, but we know why it had those issues. It isn't because of any nonsense like this. 1. What looks cartoony or unrealistic about the current UNSC Marine Corps Battle Dress Uniform (BDU)? 2. The Type-55 storm rifle is a plasma-based weapon. It was also designed by Lodam Armory to be a successor to and an evolution of the Type-25 plasma rifle that fills a multi-role position. While the plasma rifle is only good at short range, the storm rifle is effective at close-to-mid range (hence why it is held like other weapons meant for range). Plasma rifles are still being produced, but Iruiru obviously makes a lot less of them now thanks to competition from the storm rifle, for the reason I just mentioned. 3. Smart-linking is "Tron-like"? Smart-linking has been present in Halo since 2001. 4. You do realize that Fireteam Osiris' extraction mission on Kamchatka was not part of any war, right? The UNSC did not have a presence on that battlefield apart from those four spartans. The UNSC is not lacking in air power by any means whatsoever. 5. Mechanical promethean forces only consist of infantry, watchers, and turrets? Did you forget about phaetons? Or the Guardians? 6. You do realize that the mechanical Promethean forces being used by Cortana do not constitute a military force, right? They are A.I. constructs ranging widely in their degrees of sentience that are being used as tools. 7. A trebuchet is not a vehicle. 8. How can you honestly say the newer iterations of the battle rifle we have seen look more cartoonish than the older ones? 9. Dr. Halsey does not have a rank. She is a civilian. Carter says it right in the clip you included. 10. I don't understand your complaint regarding the portrayal of the ranks structure in the UNSC Armed Forces in Halo 5: Guardians. What is different in it as compared to past Halo games? Lasky mentions being subservient to "the brass" and asserts his authority on his own ship multiple times. 11. Dude, smart A.I.s are not "designed". They are literally created from doing cognitive impression modeling of human brains. No humans determine their personalities, their avatars, or their names. They choose those things themselves. They are people like anyone else. 12. Species and subspecies are not equivalent to ranks.. The majority of members of the Covenant were not even part of its military. It was a hegemony of civilizations. 13. The Covenant Honor Guard was a specialized unit. Again, not a rank. 14. Again, the mechanical Prometheans are not part of any sort of military force, and thus do not have ranks. They simply come in different classes and types. 15. Did you really ask why barely sentient robots don't create their own technology? 16. Saying the Flood acts like more of a military force than the mechanical Prometheans under someone's control is just.... How? 17. The game literally begins with Palmer giving commands to Fireteam Osiris. 18. Why in the world would Palmer have any kind of tactical relationship to any marines? Sure, she used to be one, but the marines on the Infinity report to their own chain of command separate from that of the spartans. 19. Palmer does enter the battlefield during the Battle of Sunaion briefly in a pelican. 20. How is Palmer supposed to be a replacement for Avery Johnson? Huh? 21. You really need to replay Halo 5: Guardians any pay attention to Holly Tanaka, especially on Meridian, if you think none of the characters in the game show selflessness. At one point she even indignantly reprimands Locke if he leaves some of the colonists behind to fend for themselves. 22. "In the original games you were supposed to be the last Spartan" False. 23. "In Reach's case the last group of Spartans on Reach". Also false. Other spartans besides those on NOBLE Team appear in the game, for crying out loud. 24. There are nine spartans in Halo 5: Guardians 25. Wtf? Did you just say Lasky is a spartan? And those "guys" in the background are Tanaka and Buck... I hope you were being sarcastic.. 26. "Arbiter's probably going through the augmentations process because who gives a fuck about the story" You. you don't give a fuck about the story, plainly. 27. After Jul was killed Kitun 'Arach took over what remained of his forces and led them for what little time remained.

I've been in the US Army for 4 years, I played Halo before I joined, but I stopped afterwards, right around when 343 took over and made Halo 4. I still play games (I love previous Halos) but when I see Red and Blue Spartans going to an actual war, I scoff. The books and games always portrayed the SII and SIII as special operations groups, not an action movie.

I have a question, do you think that later on the military will have specially augmented/enhanced super soldiers? Not an entire army but specifically chosen soldiers? Sorry if it's a childish question, it would just be nice to have some insight on the perspective and opinion of a soldier
@kalebbeasley49638 жыл бұрын
Syndromatic Oh yes, most definetly. DARPA is currently looking into exoskeletons through mechanical and non-mechanical means, and creating realistic prosthetics for amputee veterans. It doesn't take a long leap to imagine they might start making super human prosthetics and that some people might even use them if they are so inclined to get an edge.

Having so many Spartans also makes you feel like they are expendable and not super soldiers that are rare and special. Having so many of one thing makes it less impressive and thats what happened with halo 5. On reach it was different as the Spartans were like the children of reach and they went out to protect their planet so it made them feel like a family and unique team osiris dont feel like a team and blue team is supposed to be a team that have been with each other for the longest of times but I don't feel like that.

This. THIS. I always felt a military-esque connection with the original UNSC and all the marines, the ODSTs, and the Spartans. Reach took this realistic-military aesthetic to a new level, and as a result I *loved* how Reach felt and looked. However, Halo 4 threw that out the window. I was particularly excited to be a Spartan-IV, since they were meant to invite the player to take their own place in the Halo universe. This excitement did not last; ranks were removed and replaced with idiotic "SR" ranks, and the highly-customized, super-militaristic armors of 3 and Reach were thrown out and replaced with weird, plastic generic Sci-fi iron-man suits. A narcissistic bitch(who would _never_ have made it this high in an actual military with her lack of camaraderie and respect) was put in command of me, and Spartan Ops felt less like actual... I don't know... Spartan _Operations_ and more like second-rate firefights(which isn't good; if I wanted a firefight I'd play actual firefight). The UNSC is meant to be a _military_ first, sci-fi faction second, and 343 is forgetting that. Now I am not without fairness: I actually _like_ the ADS feature, and felt that it was as step back to a more realistic military feel. No, it's not CoD bullshit; _it is how you actually use a gun._ By that logic, Halo 5 is now ripping off ARMA 3 - and honestly, I'd really rather Halo ripped off ARMA 3 more, since in many ways it's doing a better job at being Halo than actual Halo is doing.

I have a question, Act Man. I think this will sound BAD ASS! Hunt the Truth audio series was a series about how corrupt the UNSC was, and how oppressed the outer colonies were, that the insurrectionists were fighting back against tyranny. And how the UNSC tried get the master chief arrested(and make the people hate him). Through good story telling, do you think it would be cool if they added insurrectionists as a faction, maybe even have you play as a spartan that betrayed the UNSC fighting along side them(maybe master chief)? There are some alien refugees that live in the outer colonies, maybe they could make it so aliens(elites, jackals, ect.)that improvise their own armor fight in it. And they should them be like the Americans in the revolutionary war. It would show the people the soldiers crying because there was no hope(the UNSC is so freaking powerful comparatively), and when ever you are seen they would freak out and have hope because you are their only Spartan they have.
@JohnDoe-jt2qq8 жыл бұрын
What do you halo fans think of this idea?
@alexanderrobins74978 жыл бұрын
The whole idea of your allies (UNSC) you have known for a long time and are loyal to and making them look like complete villains sounds like a horrible and cleché idea. Sure, the idea of people not liking UNSC presence around sounds good, but don't make it so in your face about them being evil. In real life the concept of good and bad can sometimes become blurry, but fortunately this is not the real world. Spartans I expect to be extremely loyal to the UNSC and aren't known for diplomacy or socializing (with enemies). As far as fighting insurrectionists goes, I noticed Bungie didn't like the idea of killing humans for some reason and made it a point like in H2 as the Arbiter not getting a chance to kill any or Noble not finding any rebels. In some ways I can understand them not wanting it to be a human vs. human conflict. At the same time I think it could work well if executed properly (fighting them for a maximum of 15% of the game, with or without the Covenant being included).
@zeeeone8 жыл бұрын
It was ONI that was trying to frame the master chief, not the unsc, and also, +Alexander Robins , the spartan IVs are very sociable, and two have already been traitors. One of which is micky from halo 3 odst. A spartan II, I doubt, would ever betray the unsc or ONI, unless Dr halsey does, as it basically her who brought them up from the age of 6. she's like a mother to them.

One theme I've noticed in games in general is that there's no structure to what actually happens like halo 5 for example: you go from location to location pointlessly killing enemy's to get to the next cutscene, and the only difference in each mission is enemy types and whether it's a forerunner place or covenant. Whereas in games like reach, each mission has a purpose and a goal and each cutscene gives u an insight to the story and characters. Such as when you go to the ONI sword base : not only does the location show us a key importance of the planet but also to the story as you go there again later in the story and it introduces dr Halsey. Also there is no structure to missions in halo 5 like look at the modern warfare series: there's a beginning mission to introduce you to the story and theme and then there are variety in gameplay with stealth missions and all guns blazing missions for example we see these in reach again: long night of solace and also when you push up the beach to get to you're spaceship(couldn't remember the name of the mission), all these just make a game feel complete and satisfies the gamers need for a certain playing style whereas once again halo5 is just constantly all guns blazing with superficial fights in cutscenes which pushes the audience out of there immersion of the story (not that it was good anyway). So to conclude I think the next halo should focus back to what halo truly is/was instead of focusing on characters like the masterchief who's supposed to be a blank canvas for the gamer to create there own chief not the Dev's to decide. Thank you for reading this leave a like and continue the discussion below and hopefully the act man will see :-)

That "comic book aesthetic" has permeated so many of the designs in halo five, especially with UNSC and forerunner structures, and it bothers the hell out of me. Reach was probably my favorite look for the games because of how down to Earth and gritty it all was. All of the UNSC structures, vehicles, ships, etc., had very defined and angular shapes to them, which made them feel industrial, like they could actually be built in a similar yet more advanced manner than how we produce things today. Hell you even see frigates being constructed in orbit around Reach in Long Night of Solace! In Halo 5 on the other hand, the warzone firebases and practically all of the maps look like they're made out of plastic. They look like they were put together with Doom's "snapmap" feature. Just generic scifi panels with some wires here and there, and /rounded edges/. Never mind the near lack of blood in Halo 5, if you need any more proof as to how baby proofed Halo 5 is, look at the corners on the UNSC structures. They are all round, and it makes no sense at all. It is a completely impractical design decision and takes away wholly from the believability of the game, as well as making everything look extremely generic. Take Blackout from Halo 3 and compare it to The Rig, in Halo 5. Blackout is instantly recognizable as an oil rig of sorts, and The Rig, well I couldn't figure out why they called it that until I fell outside of the map and realized there were tank treads attached to the building we were fighting on. Not to mention that their weapons look like Nerf g- .. Excuse me. /Boomco/ guns. The forerunner structures, in short, look way too clean. Even the guardians that were buried in the ground for hundreds of thousands, /if not millions of years/ look like they've just gone through a carwash. There's a type of blue "hexagonal energy shielding" effect when you shoot Forerunner structures if you look closely, which seems to imply there's some kind of energy keeping them clean, but the practicality of that is so ridiculously low that it only further breaks immersion. /However/, there is one exception to this: the Covenant vehicles. I absolutely love the redesigns in Halo 5. The outer shells of everything Covenant look even more alien and organic while still keeping the "industrial feel" of the vehicles intact. The best example I can think of is the banshee. The outside resembles a sort of insectoid or crustacean carapace while the inside looks very well engineered, and precision molded to fit its Sangheili operators. Almost as if they just grew the armor around the vehicles internals, which makes the mystery of how the Covenant produce their technology even more intriguing in my opinion. The Covenant weapons carry this trend over as well but to a slightly lesser extent. Anyway, I know it was kind of a long comment but if you read it then let me know what you think about Halo 5's art direction. PEACE! X)

Halo 4 had the best lighting effects though. I think that that those lighting effects coupled with Halo Reach's art direction and the color palate from Combat Evolved would make for the best looking Halo game. Halo 5 could have been a good upgrade to 4's graphics, like the beta was, but "1080p" looked better on the box than "More polished but lower resolution graphics."

I can totally understand that. The colors were a little washed out in Halo Reach, but I could say the same for Halo 2. As a result, Halo 3: ODST feels very real to me, particularly the night-time segments. The problem with Palmer is how she's written. She isn't funny. Johnson was endearing because he had all the best lines, which fit his character. To compensate for this loss, Palmer replaced him as the mid-level commander that was an ass, but she wasn't funny. She was bossy, a total bitch, and boring. Maybe if she had some humor and fought alongside you, she wouldn't receive so much hate.

After trying similar drills myself, the extremely smooth way he runs his weapons is just awesome.

The biggest element of military in these games (at least for me) are the marines. In halo 1, you have marine support in basically every single mission. Same with 2 and 3. Halo Reach, not as much, but it still has them supporting and fighting alongside you. Halo 4 was mostly just lone wolf with the Master Chief. It doesn't feel military without the actual military. Halo 5 was just depressing. Almost zero marines. That dumb militia doesn't count!
